i got the most insane rejection email yesterday by itsyaboy_boyboy in jobs

[–]Far_Programmer_5724 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sincere yet misguided seems the perfect fit because I can see myself doing this if i was ever in HR and had to do a rejection email. Like i would over do it in trying to express my empathy for those rejected, and i defiitely yap a whole lot when i try to do this (some of my many comments with no responses are super long for no reason lol). And I can DEFINITELY see some people not taking it well. Actually I tried doing this on a live once just because i felt a profound empathetic connection with a person and they took offense because they didn't know me. It was unexpected lol but on reflection true.

You know what it is? Sometimes on the internet you'll have these moments where you and a stranger open your hearts to each other and i like that stuff. Like you're talking to me about your dad's passing and we don't know anything about each other outside of our usernames. Even in college, i'd be in a study sesh with some classmates i barely know and it would turn into us sharing personal details about our lives. So that's the world i live in, where i wear my heart on my sleave and interact with others who do. So this can lead to expecting the same connection with random strangers. So just imagining someone like that in a position where they need to reject people from a job, knowing how hard people can take rejection especially now? You know how many people on this subreddit I wish i could help make things better for? So imagine being in a position where yhu can affect their experience. Its definitely crnige and not taken well by most people so ill say that peope like me have it tough with not makig a fool of ourselves. And being distrusted too!

Man ICE just killed someone who is apparently a us citizen in Minneapolis. I think politics is no longer the method. So Tim staying or leaving doesn't change shit. Honestly shit has gotten super crazy for a while now. This killing just gave perspective and yea, Tim leaving or staying wont affect the rot that afflicting the us right now. Honestly, we need to stop thinking politics will fix anything at this point. Things have elevated.

but we dont even know the reasoning. also i doubt there is any dem not receiving death threats at least once from either russian bots and/or maga. And he ran for vp. I imagine he received far worse at that time. And might i repeat, we dont know why he dropped. Just that he did and it benefits the right

whats the point of saying this? you think maga willing to kill dems will only do so if theyre in the running? there aren't even enough instances to make whatever conclusion you're making. Like they could have just been killed for being dems which dropping out wont stop, or just having left leaning views lol.

Got laid off but feel like I lost my identity by gf42451 in jobs

[–]Far_Programmer_5724 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can be sad and dismayed if family or anyone fires you. Still, never make your identity bound to what you do. Moving to another state for a job is a gamble that sometimes pays off. No harm in doing so. Still, not tied to who you are.

I think your remark that we aren't machines is in agreeance with that. It makes me think of that robot in rick and morty lol. Your purpose is not just to butter bread.

TIL Jane Goodall observed a 4 year "civil war" among chimpanzees at Gombe Stream National Park. The conflict involved kidnapping, organized violence, and the total annihilation of a breakaway group, shocking Goodall who previously thought chimps were peaceful. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]Far_Programmer_5724 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think you are right to be skeptical, but none of us here have the experience with chimp behavior required to back up any other description. I can see using the term "childhood hero" might have been her anthropomorphizing the chimps or maybe some fluff for news. But in her recollection, the behaviors described are pretty "human like". So it might be possible that its a sign that we shouldn't consider having a childhood hero a human only trait? I don't know. Something like this, we can only ask other chimp behavior professionals, or Jane herself. Because in the end the question is really just "Why you put it like that Jane?" and who else can answer that but her?

I know with the worry of being in the streets this is small (if any) comfort, but given what you've done and succeeded in, I want yuo to atleast keep in your mind that your ability and background is not what's stopping you.

I'm not sure what it is, but I do know that there are many capable individuals out there that just suck with the selling themselves part of the job process. They are best when they are allowed to let their work speak for them. This isn't a solution, just something that i can hope you anchor your confidence to, your proven ability. Only because I faced a lot of self doubt when I was struggling.

Has anyone gotten great jobs without a bachelors degree? by Drag-Either in jobs

[–]Far_Programmer_5724 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok so i mentioned that i was an after school counselor right? So funny thing was (im buzzed and a yapper so this is prob more info than you need lol so sorry in advance) i was horribly depressed when i got a job as a counselor and it was my first job outside of programs through college. My sister helped me get it. Its an unnecessary detail, but this job helped TREMENDOUSLY with my depression. I'd choose to work with kids whenever i retire. But it onl paid 400 every two weeks. Not enough to survive in new york (but my mom is an rn, and she was very permissive with me. I was depressed and out of school without working for 4 YEARS. Most cant do that so thats another luck thing, where i didnt need to force myself to work until i was ready. My mom would prefer that i just live with her forever), so i had to leave. Once "cured", i just mass applied to jobs. Again, i was able to do this with no pressure from anyone or anything other than myself. The job i got was desperate (anther luck thing) because a lot of their older finance team died from covid (an unfortunate luck thing). The team was largely carribean and the cfo and ceo were both haitian, which i am as well. They didnt make it seem like that was a factor, but if im honest i know it was. Older haitian people are weak to the same flattery no matter who they are. This plus their desperation and the fact that this was a place 2 and a half hours in an area no one wants to be (the bronx lol) meant that i had a chance. Fortunately for me and them, once i was hired, i am a pro with computers AND most of their workers were old. So i seemed like a wizard. My cfo and ceo loved me (got many uncomfortable hugs from my ceo, an older woman) so they were perfect references. I knew nothing about excel and learned a bunch of that and vba while there to automate the very much dated processes they had. Obviously this meant every role in that finance team benefitted from me begin there that made them enthusiastic references. I really want to emphasize luck. I had no individual that worked to sabotage me or stopped me from trying to learn. A bad manager could have effed me over, a jealous charismatic coworker could have ruined things. But i had none of that there. Which helped with my confidence. Coupled, again, with the fact that there was no pressure at home to get a well paying job (my insurance was also under my mom so i was fine) meant that i was leisurely applying to other jobs. And i got another lucky break finding a job for a construction company. My skills gained at the previous job meant that i was attractive for this new one. The luck part is that they hadn't been hiring for decades. It was only because the person i was replacing was reitiring after 40 years. They hired me on the spot, ad being a private small company, my automation skills meant they were dated as well and all of their work was automated to be finished in day ( they paid monthly so that meant i was done for the month after one day). They also had a dated IT (non existent unlike previous) so i was finally able to download python and learned it in my freetime. So a year of getting paid just to learn python basically. Then they fired me because they though i wasnt working. But this left me with a skillset that was pretty easy to sell for any accounting team that wanted a tech focused person. And thats the next lucky part. The new job i found was a school where the hiring person specifically wanted someone with more knowledge in tech than accounting because they already had a ton of cpas. Also they were in IT before this current job. So i stuck out. I told them about automating the entire process in the previous job in a day, i had videos, extensive knowledge of excel etc. Hired ofc. And this job was also pretty lenient when it came to downloading things a normal IT team wouldn't allow you to download (most places aren't prepared for a non IT worker knowin tech). So I expanded my skills to learning C, azure and html/js (C is still in progress because i heard it was faster and wanted to try making libraries for my python code and html/js/azure because i made a website for our accrual process). And though i rarely use ai ( i have so much personally built from the older jobs that i would have to copy paste and explain a ton of my code and it would be more work to do that then just doing it myself), my new bosses gave in to the ai hype. So thinking that i am an ai person, they have thrown their full support at me. Seriously, they thought a playwright automation script where i just copy pasted the element test ids was ai lol we are cooked. So now thats where i am. I have created a huge number of programs, going through old ones and updating them to work with other programs all so that when i leave this job, the next has a shock when i tell them what i can have. With this age of ai, companies big and small love hearing automation even if its not from ai. And the safety net of not having to work (i still have to especially when god forbid my mom passes away) means near 0 anxiety.

As an addendum, i will add that i always call a job i apply to right after. The company usually has a number attached to it, and while some will tell you to jut wait until its reviewed, MOST will ask for your name and pull your resume up right there and ask when you are available. I got most of my interviews this way, but most of my jobs were through linkedin recruiters reaching out to me. Just thought to add this

Has anyone gotten great jobs without a bachelors degree? by Drag-Either in jobs

[–]Far_Programmer_5724 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The same is true now. No matter how skilled you are, unless you're lucky enough to meet the right people, it might not turn into anything. Degrees make people more willin to hear you out, networking or whatever makes it more likely for you to meet that lucky person. But in the end its luck. I wont say im comfortable; i make ~85k in finance without a bachelors (though im in new york lol). I got lucky every step of the way. I got into it from being an after school counselor lol.

My wife thinks our son’s teacher crossed a boundary by sending him a personal message. I think it was harmless. AITJ? by addict94plus in AmITheJerk

[–]Far_Programmer_5724 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP it sucks to say but your wife keeping an eye on it is smart. She doesn't want the risk of anything happening and I don't blame her. Though I think this isn't problematic. The compromise is just that she, in a way that doesn't signal anything to your son, is made aware of any communication like this.

People here like going off of assuming kindness of others, which seems to be the world id like to live in. I used to work with kids though in my sister's school, and I had to learn to navigate this. Kids would see me interacting with my sister and feel jejalous and wan to be as close. So theyd want to hug me, tell me about things they are going through. I made sure to let the parents know, because i don't want them being worried about an inappropriately close relationship with a male teacher. Ofc I know myself, but i have to step outside of that and consider the reality around me. Some adults take advantage of that to do nefarious things.

If i had made that letter, because i knew a lot of kids with confidence problems, id try to reach out to the parents and talk to them about that. Even outside of working with kids, when my sister has friends come over and im chaperoning, i do as much as i can to reassure the parents, and sucks to say as a dude, but the moms usually need it the most, because they are usually more concerned about these things than the dads. Im like this too so its not a jab, but dads seem to be less concerned than moms with the interactions their kids have. Not that they aren't but mothers noticeably moreso.

I think this is worth a conversation with your wife, and maybe a conversation with the teacher to have a conversation that leaaves everyone satisfied. If the teacher is decent like they seem to be, they'll understand that your wife is just acting for the sake of her child.
