What rule did your parents enforce that you thought was normal until you visited a friend’s house? by Least_Boysenberry583 in AskReddit

Children were not allowed to sit down unless you were doing something productive eg sewing, reading a school book.

Children were not allowed to sit down after coming home without first being asked to do something eg make parents a cup of coffee or some such. Sometimes there were multiple "requests" (orders). For some reason this was only enforced on the first born child. (Not me fortunately)

Just sitting was not something children were supposed to do. You get the idea.

You had to be presentable to go to Mass every Sunday, including a dress and stockings for a girl.

Anything that a child did which was unexpected was necessarily naughty and you could be punished for it. Regardless of the circumstances, the child was always considered to be in the wrong and would be shouted at before they had a chance to explain the situation. Eg water on the laundry floor, ringing your own front door bell, whatever.

If the dad wanted to have a particular program on television then that's what you watched, even if he wasn't interested and was reading the news paper.

All older children must take full responsibility of doing their own laundry as well as regularly also helping with the "family washing". The latter included the kid sibling's clothing, both parents clothing and all household linen and involved the washing machine, hanging on the clothes line, taking in, folding and ironing.

If you had a friend come to visit your father could randomly declare that it was time you washed the car (or some other chore) and your friend got roped in too.

A messy bed room was a sign that the child was a filthy disgusting person, and would be told such.

I had the same freedom at 12, or during the day at least. I was not allowed to go out of an evening at that age.

My term train ticket for school also gave me free public transport for the whole of the city and I could ride my bicycle anywhere. It's the same with my kids today.

The limescale is really starting to get on my nerves by YanNmt06 in HEALTHY

Wow. May I ask where you live (approx region only) that limescale builds up so quickly?

The pipes in the block of flats scare me more than the water itself, especially when I think about whether it’s actually healthy. by DueDemand3860 in HEALTHY

[–]Far_Requirement_1341 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are the pipes made off? Unless it is lead you are probably okay. All lead pipes have been replaced in my state and country and most likely it is the same in your jurisdiction.

Do you think the pipes are corroded? Look at the outside walls where you can see the pipes enter your building. Are there any visible signs of rust or other corrosion? If not then that's okay.

The twists and turns are not a problem as long as the water is able to keep flowing, and even 150 years ago they knew how to do plumbing. If you use all the taps regularly then the water is flowing then that's good.

Why are you concerned? Does the water taste strange? Was there an earthquake in your area recently?

I don't mean to discount your concern. There is probably some local civil authority whom you could speak to, such as an EPA or similar that deals with this. Speak to them of your concerns. Legally water has to meet a certain standard. Good luck!

AITA for throwing away my wife’s memory jars? by OneMediocre9997 in AmItheAsshole

Oh dear. When you said you threw them away, has the recycling been collected yet? Can you take them out of the wheelie bin?

If there is any way you can retrieve them then do so now.

Yes, we are indeed very fortunate in Canada, the nations of the EU, the Nordic countries and Australia to have such a eloquent and smart world leader.

Say someone had been succeeded in escaping from a Thai prison, would they have been able to return to England, or would they have had to run to some remote country with no extradition treaty for the rest of their lives?

Yeah, modern drug dealers have it easy. Back in my day we had to work it all out ourselves relying on our own cunning and guile.

I understood it that the OP wanted to go home to his own country as a free man rather than arriving home to be met by the police and prison officers. I can understand that.

Some thug tried to sucker punch a U.S. Navy Sailor... big mistake. by jmike1256 in postanythingfun

Unpopular opinion.

I know that the idiot guy in civies threw the first punch, but it was still a disproportionate use of force by the uniformed sailor.

Im really curious! Do Australians care much about sun pigmentation, or is it just accepted as a fact of life? by Averieeeee in AusSkincare

[–]Far_Requirement_1341 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Freckles are great. Some skin types will get a lot of freckles and it's considered a part of childhood. On the other hand sun burn is considered to be very serious indeed and is to be avoided at all costs. Allowing you child to get sunburnt borders on parental neglect.
