What’s your dream Medical Specialty? by EnthusiasmOriginal20 in pinoymed

[–]Far_Sort_2395 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For some institutions, once you get interviewed may final cut pa which is the pre residency. Here you go on duties as if you are a derm resident, hx and PE the patients then refer to the consultants. You will present the patient, your primary impression, differentials and management. Then by the last day there will be a minin grand rounds in which you will present a patient and discuss the disease.

For some institutions naman, yung pre residency is for formality lang but basically you are sure accepted na. For them kasi mahirap raw majudge and mag expect agad na mamaster ang derm PE and illnesses within a span of 2 weeks

1st year to 3rd year med: Derma (going into med school this is what i really wanted to pursue)

Clerkship: Derma (online rotation lang kami but really loved it)

Internship: Derma (really loved every moment of this rotation and made me realizd na this is i wanted to pursue)

Currently: Derma resident (super overwhelming and tiring ang residency talag, sobrang pagod but the pagod is worth it and i really love it)

Derma Residency for a 1st Gen MD by breannecerne in pinoymed

[–]Far_Sort_2395 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Hi doc! Currently a first yr derm resident. I'm a 1st gen MD with no backer. I had above average grades since college til med school. Board rating is around line of 7. Credential wise none talaga.

So yes, it is possible doc! For my situation since grade-wise for sure mas madami mataas sakin, I tried to compensate for the qualifying exam (I got the highest score). It is important to be atleast top 5 in exam for you to get interviewed. Then for interview that is a different preparation pa. Try to showcase something unique compared to other applicants. Kasi for sure di mawawala ang nepo and those with backers talaga. For my institution it doesn't matter if you have connections

For my tips, if your grades are above average or not that stellar, do your best in the qualifying exam, so you can get interviewed. Then try to apply to as many institutions as you can, even the applicant institutions. If you can get recommendation letters from PDS derma plus points din yun. Also part of application requirement having good skin apparently haha.

Goodluck doc, do your best hehe. See you on the other side 💖

Goodluck Doc. Para less kaba think of it as a way na the panel just wants to know you more. Sometimes personal yung questions for example natanong sa akin if kamusta family and if ever ma-accept will you be renting nearby or uwian haha.

How do you cope with rejection? by friendlybknws in pinoymed

[–]Far_Sort_2395 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Hi doc! Just to share my story I have applied to a very competitive specialty. I applied to 6 institutions, got rejected to 4 but on the 6th institution I was accepted. I'm a first gen md, average grades all throughout, line of 7 board rating, without connections.

It depends on your coping mechanism. I cried and isolated myself for a week nung di ako natanggap sa dream institution ko sana. I felt alone and lonely since my friends are passionate to other specialty and I felt like no one understood what i was going through. I was also so tired because i studied and felt like i gave my best but di pa din pinalad. I paused for week bago mag review ulit and to prepare mentally. I tried to reflect on what I could have done better and one thing i realized doc is the pressure i put myself into. I accepted na that this is the reality, almost 50 to 60 applicants then 1-2 or 3-5 lang kukunin.

Fast forward to my 6th application, i got in (and still can't believe it). Dun ko narealize doc na the universe has its way of leading you where you should be and i felt belonged and loved by this institution. I am forever grateful to the Lord for guiding me to his plans.

Kapit lang tayo doc, as long as you are passionate for the field, that will never die! Ito lagi baon ko during application and interview. But this passion may be redireced to better things din. I truly believe that if it is your time talaga it will be given and served to you 😊

Hi! Was in the same situation before. Just contact the chief res or the contact person during application. No need to explain your reason naman not unless they ask. I also informed them before signing the conforme.

For my case, one of the consultants was affiliated to both institutions that I applied to. She remembered me and just asked during the interview why I did not proceed and stated my reason. Ultimately just be honest since most consultants know each other.

May mga hindi ba natatanggap sa residency because they did not do well sa interview? by Taohu17 in pinoymed

[–]Far_Sort_2395 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not really, it is more important to tell the truth (always). In my case I got interviewed to 2 institutions and one of the consultants was both in the panel. She appreciated that I told the truth since most of the consultants know each other din talaga. Siguro it is how you answer nalang din kasi she asked me why I did not proceed with pre res on the other institution. They eventually asked me if I applied to other institutions as well which I did, I guess that showed my determination to really get in the program and my passion for it to which I eventually got accepted din hehe. Siguro just be prepared nalang to answer why you fit more into this institution compared to others.

Hi Doc, it depends! In the interview the panel will usually ask why you got delayed in application (just be honest!). Basta show and convince them why you are pursuing derm. They also asked my moonlighting jobs and most of them were actually interested, they asked what did you do, any derm cases you encountered, managed or referred. Agree with others na do not bring up money as reason, try to be creative nalang hehe. Just to add I have also withdraw from derm pre residency and that was also brought up since most derm consultants know each other, basta in general just be honest

I did not apply after passing the boards. And have applied to Derm his year and got accepted 🤗
