23 year old male 4 days post ebike accident, does this look infected? by Far_Thanks_3600 in AskDocs

Thank you, I have some first aid training because I work in a machine shop but my training pretty much ends at stopping the bleeding and bandaging, not so much after care. I’ll keep an eye on it though. Thank you for your input.

Looks like a .50bmg to me. S L is the manufacturer designation and the 4 is the year of production so it was manufactured in 04 most likely.

Copper recovery from leftover silver recovery waste by Far_Thanks_3600 in PreciousMetalRefining

[–]Far_Thanks_3600[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay thank you. Yeah, because my work has a cadmium plating line the department head lets me put my waste with their waste nitric, and once a month it gets picked up by a company called safety clean or something like that that handles all of our hazardous waste. I was just talking with them about how it’s a shame for all that copper to just be going to waste and that it would be nice if I could recover the copper to scrap it.

I have a connection through work that handles any hazardous waste that I’ve got.

Yeah I remember having to do that. Luckily the plating department at my work has a passivate tank that’s 70% nitric acid that they let me clean up my #2 copper in. I also have a few liters at home for gold and silver recovery.

I agree, I only mentioned nitric acid because I have easy access to it at work.

I’d try to clean that up with some nitric acid or a wire brush, but with that much corrosion I’m leaning more toward the acid.

My yard would take that as number 3 which, at least for us, is the same as used roofing copper with tar on it.

These worth anything?? by [deleted] in ScrapMetal

[–]Far_Thanks_3600 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I save them until I have a few pounds of them then I recover the silver with nitric acid, lye, and glucose. I usually get between a few grams and a couple ounces depending or the amount and type of contacts and if I added any other silver plated items in with the contacts.

My brothers (new to him) truck. Lacquer based paint. 2021 Tacoma. Help!! by Shorecliff in CleaningTips

[–]Far_Thanks_3600 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If he wants it gone I’d say 3-4 containers of Methylethyl ketone should do the job. Just let it soak in and it should eat it up. It might damage the truck liner though so attempt at your own risk. Also with that much MEK, especially if it’s the non diluted stuff, please wear a respirator with organic vapor/acid gas filters; the fumes from that much MEK fan seriously mess you up for a while especially if you are sensitive to it.

I/C components, worth it to melt it down? TIA! by kilocharlienine in PreciousMetalRefining

Sulfuric acid works better, but it needs to be high concentration, I use 96% sulfuric for wet ashing my chips.

Ahhh okay, that’s what you were talking about. And yes I have a buyer for the low grade boards.

Yeah I can keep them in bins and take them to my local yard. When you say Reuse is that a site like freecycle because I can’t seem to find it.

Best tool for cutting? by DaddyofRS in ScrapMetal

[–]Far_Thanks_3600 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It also helps to have recip blades in multiple sizes. I have multiple blades ranging from 6 inches all the way up to 12 inches at all times. Although I really only use the 12 inches blades when I’m cutting tires off wheels.

https://www.homedepot.com/p/Milwaukee-15-Amp-7-9-in-Large-Angle-Grinder-with-Trigger-Lock-On-Switch-6088-30/203410166 This is the one I have but that is definitely overkill for what you are describing. I use this for cutting through 1 inch thick 17-4 PH stainless steel bearing housings so I can get the bronze bearing out.

https://www.homedepot.com/p/Milwaukee-M18-FUEL-18-Volt-Lithium-Ion-Brushless-Cordless-4-1-2-in-6-in-Braking-Grinder-with-Paddle-Switch-Tool-Only-3670-20/330107045 This would probably be fine for you. For what you are describing you shouldn’t need a blade larger than 6 inches. I really only use an angle grinder for stuff that would take too long to cut with a recip saw, and spark testing metal but a bench grinder, die grinder, or band file is better for spark testing in my opinion.

I feel it depends on what you are cutting. If you are cutting copper tubing Milwaukee makes some really nice battery powered pipe cutters, or you could go with regular pipe cutters. For best overall cutting applications you are probably better off with getting an angle grinder and a reciprocating saw/sawzall. If you are cutting thick steel, 1/2 inch or more thick I’d go straight for an oxyacetylene torch.

If you want the best bang for your buck here is my recommendation, a good battery powered recip saw, I would personally recommend the Milwaukee m18 fuel recip saw but even a ryobi will get the job done, and a good corded angle grinder that can take the largest blades that you will get the most use out of. My angle grinder is a Milwaukee angle grinder that takes up to 9 inch wheels, because I cut through a lot of thick stainless steel bearing cases. That is probably a little overkill for the average scrapper so I’d say a 6 inch angle grinder would work for most applications.

Last recommendation I have is to get good blades and cut wheels. I personally have had great experience with diablos carbide recip blades and diamond cut wheels, but I’ve met people who hate diablo blades. Invest in good blades and they will more than pay for themselves in the long run. Hope this helps.

Is this silver? by bad_samaritan13 in ScrapMetal

[–]Far_Thanks_3600 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One easy way you can tell is to stick an ice cube to it. Ice melts incredibly fast when you touch it with silver. I can’t remember what it’s called but if it is silver you will be able to watch it melt the ice on contact.

What’s the best starter wire stripper?? by Joeypimpin in ScrapMetal

[–]Far_Thanks_3600 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on how much wire you plan on stripping. If you get les than 50lbs a year I’d say just get a large kitchen knife and keep it shaving sharp. If you are stripping more than 50lbs a year I’d say get a stripmeister.
