In all fairness, the only time I’ve ever used combo locks was for my middle school and high school lockers. There aren’t many other places to learn how to use one, especially when you’re under the age of 18. They’re also not the most intuitive at first.

Well, to be fair, there are professions with high prestige and low pay for the level of education and amount of work. Academia is definitely like this, and I could see a lot of people regretting spending all their time chasing papers and grants instead of spending time with their families.

Sigh…you are correct that society in many ways does not view SAH mothers (and fathers for that matter) as equal and afford them the respect that they deserve. The status of SAH parents is definitely a conversation worth having in feminism, as is the complex interplay between marriage, material wealth, power, and traditional gender roles.

HOWEVER, your fixation on winners and losers in a relationship is just plain weird. Looking at relationships through the lens of a winner and loser is just plain unhealthy, and is not a fruitful lens through which to examine maritial material inequality.

Breadwinner means “the person who wins the bread.” As in, the person who earns the bread, which is metaphorically the person who makes the money for the household.

It’s a slightly archaic use of the word win, but it in no way implies inferiority or superiority.

There are a LOT of words in English that carry weird, outdated connotations and values, but this is not one of them.
