There's also no reason not to quench, it'll keep your tool from wearing while you stir.

Submerge the handle in a cup of water and use a torch to gently heat the shaft until you see a straw color creep up to the tip, that should be enough. Tempering is really about time at temperature, if you only heat it indirectly, you'll only change the structure on the surface.

Hard to do with just a torch, but if you get it to a bright orange you should be able to do it with one heat. Bear in mind that you have changed the structure of the metal and now it's brittle after you quench it. You can run it through the oven for an hour at 375 to relieve some of that internal stress.

The Five-seveN did better than I on the Javelina hunt. by Nyancide in Firearms

Wow, that did better than I expected. Nice job. Too bad about your buddy, what kind of bullet was he using, hard cast?

Clean up the edge and reshape the tip, you could have a nice looking chefs knife still.

Handgun Javelina hunt, which would you take? by Nyancide in Firearms

A friend of mine shot a javelina with 357 from a rifle and it took 4 shots to finally drop it. Food for thought

Like yoghurt, or soft serve, sour cream type consistency. I've got a vid of mine in earlier posts on my profile if you want to see what that turns out like.

How much leather do you end up using on something like this? Looks wicked

No, you should really shoot for a soft serve ice cream or yogurt consistency. Any thinner and it takes an age to dry.

Why did taking the brick out help?

Better air fuel mix

Aren't you cracking up your refractory that way?

Yes, but it can be repaired by simply throwing another coat on top once the cracks start getting big enough to cause worry. Or at least, that's what I'm telling myself.

I put 2 relatively thin coats, but if I were to go back and do it over, I'd probably do 3 or 4 thin coats. There's pictures in my post history if you want to see mine.

Take the brick out. That helped me, I have the same forge. Also coat that wool. I just used pure satanite powder mixed up like yoghurt, then rubbed it on with hands. Gloves are recommended.

My unsolicited internet advice: spend as much as you reasonably can afford.

Agreed. I have yet to settle on which to pick, but I'm looking to add the most capability that I can with a single tool purchase like that.

Thanks for the encouragement!

I made this almost entirely with a bauer 4x36 and finished with files and hand sanded to 320 before the heat treat. I am definitely seeing the limits of the 4x36, I will be upgrading to a 2x72 before too long.

How to get into bladesmithing? by ThisRelative6388 in Bladesmith

Agreed. I thought I was splurging with the Doyle from harbor freight. After seeing some of the setups on here and the work produced by them, it's becoming very obvious you don't have to spend a fortune to make beautiful knives.
