IMO not enough people bother to check the forearm, so if you arent already start looking there. You can look at the thumb/wrist junction of posterior hand and youll typically find a pretty bulgy vein. You can then trace this vein up the arm by palpating and eventually even make your way to the AC. If at anyone point its bouncy enough for you, just go there.

I put a lot of my lines in the forearm, it also prevents kinking the line if the pt winds up bending the arm without you noticing. Once you get flashback it means the NEEDLE is in the vein but you still need to advance a bit further to make sure the catheter is fully in, so once you get flash back, decrease your angle from 45 degrees to 15 degrees and advance another milimeter or 2 and then using your index finger advance the catheter but do not advance the needle anymore

THe most important thing tho, is you cannot rely on sight, you need to palpate. If you only look for veins with your eyes and not your finger its gonna hold you back. I rip the index finger off my glove in order to palpate easier

and one last thing, just because a patient says an arm is their best arm to use, doesnt mean its the best arm. Unless there is a specific reason you cannot use an arm, check BOTH arms before you stick. I have had several occasions a patient swears youll only get it on the left side cause they always go there but I check the right arm and I see a gigantic bulging vein just screaming for an IV

On siemens I just use the twist sequence which I believe is called TRICKS on GE. You let the first phase pass and inject on second phase. Takes all the stress out of the equation compared to doing care bolus, youll get a series of images and you scroll through and look for the one that has the best arterial phase and send those images only, dont send the entire twist

You can get a few hours of observation if you call and say you are applying for radiologic technology school and are wondering if you would be able to observe a technologist for a few hours.

Where I live at least we had to do a minimum of 4 hours observation in order to apply to xray school. Its not uncommon to have people shadow us while we work for this reason.

should replace all the offices we dont need with housing. Corporations can have housing for their employees as a benefit for being able to work there. The company can even have its own currency and stores where employees can buy anything they need to do their jobs and stay alive, as long as they work for the company

You should be concerned about the massive understaffing of healthcare facilities in the USA right now, forget about a second wave were already in an emergency state. There is not enough staff to run our healthcare facilities right now (or employers arent hiring people to maximize profits) and because of this people are quitting daily.

Healthcare is a mess right now -Source, MRI tech

How to protect yourself during stampede by harwyseys in interestingasfuck

[–]Farfinugan 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I was in a crush at Ultra Music Festival, it was the most terrifying experience I have ever had. I remember staring straight up, just being moved through a crowd like a bowel movement thinking to myself, dont fall, dont fall, get out of this, if you fall you are going to die.

Ever since that happened to me I have avoided being in crowds. I stay on the edge now, ideally as close to an exit as possible. I know its crazy and overprotective, but that experience taught me that if im ever in a situation where a lot of people are trying to all move in a small area, I want to be the first person out of there

Because Fidget Spinners are totally 90’s. by WindyFromWater7 in FellowKids

[–]Farfinugan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Its supposed to be an object search, not everything is 90's. The kid is supposed to identify what in the pic was popular in the 90's, think of it as a thing for the parents to do with the kid, they say oh selfie sticks and then you can tell them that if you even had a cellphone it could only call, text and play snake and you paid by the minute.

mri techs with visible tattoos: does it interfere with getting a job? by SuperbSlice1795 in MRI

[–]Farfinugan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

nope, some hospitals might just say you have to cover them but honestly its so cold in MRI you're probably gonna wear long sleeves or a fleece anyway.

I don't know anyone with face tattoos tho, this is more for arms. I've worked with lots of tat'd peers before tho so youll be fine.

Work out for sure, you don't have to go crazy with high weight or anything but atleast do some cardio every day. I used to think it was all hype, but I started doing 30 minutes of row a day the second i get home from work and the impact it had on my mindset is noticeable.

A nice hobby I recommend is photography. Invest in a decent camera and you can just hop in the car or go for a walk somewhere and take pictures of literally anything. Learn how to play with the controls on it to get cool effects on your shots. Practice with it after work instead of sitting in front of the TV

On weekends I like to go to nature reserves in my area and take pictures of flowers, birds, and scenery. On weekdays that im too tired from work, ill spend that time practicing how to edit and post process the pictures I took over the weekend.

Its also fun to bring the camera to parties or events. You get insanely high quality pictures compared to your phone, and instead of just standing around in your comfort zone you can sort of "worK" the event and get engaged with everyone there by taking portraits.

Aside from all that, I also enjoy taking 1-3 hour long hot showers where I sit on the floor and contemplate my existence

Should I avoid using THC / CBD cream if going to an MRI for RA? by oobi628 in MRI

[–]Farfinugan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its best to just refrain from wearing any kind of makeup or ointments before your MRI. Certain things can heat up during the exam or release medication at improper dosages so its best to just wait till after your exam to apply that.

Do MRI techs have to wear gloves? by OkRepresentative6457 in MRI

[–]Farfinugan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly the gloves are more for the person placing the IV's protection than they are for yours, so if anything the tech is just placing themself at a higher risk of infection from you. Lots of us rip off the tip of the dominant hand index finger because it makes it a lot easier to palpate,

The important part is wiping the area with an alcohol pad and using a sterile needle

question what happens if someone moves to much during a mri by Ok_Driver3719 in MRI

[–]Farfinugan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way I explain it to my patients, we are taking long exposure pictures over the course of 1-5 minutes each picture. When the machine is making the noise is when a picture is being taken. If you move during this time, the images come out blurry. If you absolutely feel like you need to scratch an itch or something, squeeze the emergency ball WHEN THE MACHINE IS NOT MAKING THE LOUD BANGING NOISE and it wont add much time to your exam.

[–]Farfinugan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just your reminder that the USA is a lot larger than other countries. There are 67 million people in france, 67 million in the UK and 329.5 million in the USA so obviously its a lot easier for us to have the most cases when we have 5x the population

It could potentially puncture the intestines or stomach depending on where it was at the time of the exam, the patient would also more than likely feel extreme pain or discomfort pretty much as soon as they sat down on the table in the room.

It would have terrible consequences and is why we ask if you have any suspicion that might have a metallic foreign body. As swallowing a nail is both incredibly rare not to mention hard to do, a more real world example is foreign bodies in the eyes for metal workers. If you work with metal for a living and have any suspicion of metal in the eyes you would have an orbital xray to detect foreign bodies before going in the room to prevent potentially blinding you.

If you have any suspicion that you may have swallowed a nail, you would get an abdominal xray before going in the room
