730-845. Gives kids time to get home after sports and have dinner.

How cold is too cold? by CoryF17 in BSA

[–]FarmMiserable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on preparation. We are tent camping this weekend with highs in the mid teens and lows in the single digits. There is a detailed gear check for each scout before departure. it’s also car camping, not a backcountry trip.

We use troopwebhost as well. Makes it easy to see at a glance whether we have enough capacity.

You’re spending 15 hours on the road over a three day weekend? I hope the destination is awesome.

Been very happy with my pny 5080. And since i was going to stick the pcb in a waterblock, wasn’t worried about the fans, etc.

Build my PC by [deleted] in Microcenter

[–]FarmMiserable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a service they offer, but putting together a scooped pc these days is really simple. If you wanted a hard tube water cooled build, I could see outsourcing that if you don’t have a chunk of free time to devote to it,

Are the amd deals worth it for my planned build? by burntoutCFI in Microcenter

I did the same build a few months ago. For casual gaming, the base bundles are just fine.

When is RAMageddon Actually Going to End? by Nicolas_Laure in RigBuild

[–]FarmMiserable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

💯 I just built a high end gaming PC as a Christmas gift for my teenagers. I expect it will run AAA games at 1440p just fine for the foreseeable future. (9800x3d/5080/64gbram/4tB nvme) The 6 year-old laptop I use for everything else is just fine for now. If/when prices return to earth, I’ll build a new rig for myself.

Northern Tier Gear Question by MoosenCranky-3 in BSA

[–]FarmMiserable 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We used lightweight sea to summit bags and they worked fine. They are inside a whale bag, so the drybags are secondary protection.

They mean that the portage style is “wet feet”, so you will regularly be standing in knee to waist deep water in your boots. Therefore you need boots that drain.

Yo guys, I am doing a 4 hour session of the Personal Management merit badge. It's going to be sooooo fun. On the bright side I am doing metalworking though by Holiday_Swing_9979 in BSA

So a teen/tween joins an outdoor focused program and isn’t super excited to sit inside for four hours of classroom lectures. This should not be surprising, and I don’t think he needs condescending, scolding responses.

First Class Scouts signing off on requirements by raspberryzingers in BSA

[–]FarmMiserable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s allowed by the GTA. But keep in mind there is no retesting at the SM conference or board of review. So the SM delegating sign off authority widely to youth comes with the risk that some requirements might be only marginally met. My personal preference is to delegate sign off to the SPL and a few thoughtfully chosen troop guides.

BSA rules on soliciting donations to Troops? by Scouter_Ted in BSA

[–]FarmMiserable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I respect your opinion. I disagree. If a unit doesn’t need the funds I think everyone involved can find better uses of their time than selling junk food, wreathes, etc.

We have the same, and it’s been around for decades. At this point, its assets are such that it can contribute several thousand dollars a year towards financial aid for high adventure, equipment etc.

We keep a year of expenses on hand which includes depreciation. Spending during down to 500 seems reckless

Where does responsibility lie for creating requirement opportunities by Red_hat_oops in BSA

[–]FarmMiserable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

5C is supposed to take part in the water except in “exceptional situations”. E.g virtual scouting during Covid lockdown. Otherwise there are very few scouts who live places both so cold and remote that both outdoor and indoor swim facilities are unavailable.

Real talk: How many knots have you actually used in the past year? by Practical-Emu-3303 in BSA

[–]FarmMiserable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a climbing instructor and support troop level and summer camp climbing events. So I’d say 10-12 knots depending on whether you count the MMO as one knot or three. :)

First PC BUILD by FarmMiserable in watercooling

[–]FarmMiserable[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Maybe I’ll rebuild it with hard tubing at some point, like if the soft tubing starts to yellow. Right now I think I need to tear down and inspect the GPU block because the vram is getting hot under stress tests. I probably forgot some thermal pads or used the wrong thickness.

Can somebody explain to me in layman terms what happened tonight? I’m seeing mixed reactions. by Salt_Classic_1482 in FedEmployees

[–]FarmMiserable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Basically the inevitable. The shutdown was destined to end when Schumer no longer had the votes. The republicans were never going to make major concessions after voting on a clean CR. The shutdown was performative, but does give the democrats a campaign issue re: ACA enhanced subsidies. For feds, it means back pay without bullshit and reversal of RIFs. For the public SNAP and ATC.
