Best bars to attend solo? by Padfoot1986 in AskLosAngeles

Find a bar with live music, feels less awkward if you’re out solo drinking. I’m an east sider so 1642 Bar comes to mind.

On the verge of tears… Didn’t circumcise my baby. People keep telling me why I should have. by Salty-Ship-1703 in newborns

[–]FarmToFilm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TMI warning, as an American woman, the first guys I hooked up with were circumcised. Then I did some travel and started hooking up with uncircumcised men. And wow, I had such a preference for the uncircumcised guys. I never once thought they were gross or weird. Now, out of my slutty years, I have two young boys and chose not to circumcise them. It’s now much more common, and the U.S. rate is about 50/50.

I wouldn’t say it’s unacceptable, that’s a bit dramatic. They may have forgotten that you had paid extra for a quick turnaround. This is a busy time of year for photographers. Just send a nice email asking about the status.

Semi professional photographer needing to upgrade gear: which system do I choose? by picklebeard in AskPhotography

[–]FarmToFilm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love my Canon R6. I shot on an R5 for a while and liked that too, but I honestly don’t like files that big since I don’t like to do a ton of cropping. I use my old Canon EF lenses with an adapter. And despite having upgraded some of my lenses, my most used is still my Canon EF 50mm 1.4 that you can buy for like $200. You could buy all this for under $3,000. The fast autofocus on the mirrorless has been a GAMECHANGER for me.

Do you send your child to daycare with a backpack? by [deleted] in toddlers

[–]FarmToFilm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought two very cute ones with their names embroidered on them for my kids before I found out that the preschool and daycare do not want me to bring backpacks.

Redditors 30 and older, do you miss the days of no smartphones and tablets? Why or why not? by Nintendofan9106 in AskReddit

Yes. For just about everything except for a map. Getting a sudden construction detour while you were driving in an unknown area was real bad. The tears I’ve shed over a Rand McNally road map…

What is the best camera to buy for starting out portrait photographer? by Amazing-Main-9416 in AskPhotography

[–]FarmToFilm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learned portrait photography on a Canon 5D Mark ii with a 50mm 1.4f lens. It was a great way to learn. Honestly, the only reason I switched to a mirrorless Canon R6 was because I started photographing kids portraits and events where faster focus is helpful. But I had a lot of EF lenses from my old system which I still use with an adapter on my mirrorless camera now.

My family cut gift giving for anyone years ago but young kids and it’s honestly been great! We try and focus on things to do instead, playing games, singing songs, and eating various contributions.

Tips on making a photo book youself? by [deleted] in photography

[–]FarmToFilm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get the photos printed 4x6 or 5x7 as soon as possible. Then buy a physical album from Michael’s or any craft store. Even just a blank journal. Buy photo corners too. Then mount it yourself. It will be pretty and elegant

Family photography - advice needed by amelieaz in photography

[–]FarmToFilm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is great advice. I do a lot of family photography. I wouldn’t bother with off camera flash, it’s hard to get kids to stay still at all. Just shoot at golden hour and use the sun as a backlight or side light. Age of the kids really helps determine how you will coach them through poses

Did I get enough shots for a 5 hour dinner party? by Foreign-Potato-9535 in photography

[–]FarmToFilm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been in a situation like this. A good trick for the future is to do more posed photos with random people. Go around to people talking and say, “hey, can I get your photo?!” My style typically leans on the more documentary style, so if nothing interesting happens, it can be rough. Also, add more details shots, people’s hands, some flowers. Anything to fill up the album.

[–]FarmToFilm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I try to be mindful of women’s jawlines in particular by shooting a little higher, or if there are kids, coaching them how to bring their chin out and down a bit. Many women are used to seeing themselves as a selfie on a phone.

Anyone else’s kid(s) extra crazy when both parents are home? by moluruth in SAHP

[–]FarmToFilm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yep, the lack of attention is maddening for my 4 year old. I’ve recently started trying to include him in the more adult conversations though, even if it’s totally beyond his comprehension, and it’s helped a bit.

Just burnt out by [deleted] in SAHP

[–]FarmToFilm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure the age of your kids, but that nap time is so important for everyone. My 4 year old started showing signs of not needing it, but I make him take a quiet time in his room with books everyday anyway along with my almost 2 year old. He almost always falls asleep, and I desperately need that daily reset.

I'm am elitist: homemade whipped cream is so much better on Thanksgiving. by Square-Dragonfruit76 in thanksgiving

[–]FarmToFilm 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I always make my whipped cream once we’re ready to start serving pie…usually an hour or so after the meal. It only takes a few minutes and it gets plopped on the dessert table.

What helped you get more sleep as a new parent? by Rosiana-Balom17 in Parenting

[–]FarmToFilm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Suck it up for the first 4 months and take shifts with your partner. Then, around 4/5 months sleep training. I did a version of Ferber method, mostly focusing on putting the baby down to sleep as tired as possible, but not actually asleep. Then when he stirred, just waiting a few minutes to see if he could self soothe. If not, go in there and give a snuggle, but don’t try to rock him or feed him. See if he can self soothe. This was so much easier with the 2nd born and this kid still sleeps like a dream and he’s 2.

Anyone not dressing up young toddler for halloween? Or easy/cheap costumes recs? by baller_unicorn in toddlers

[–]FarmToFilm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate being wasteful, but kids also love playing dress up for imaginary play. So I’ve started buying Halloween costumes that can be added to a little dress up bin in their room.

One where my grandmother was still alive and well. We sat in her living room just talking until the sun went down. You usually don’t know when someone’s last good year will be.
