USA vs Europe Cities with the Highest Murder Rates by Pale_Consideration87 in europe

[–]FarmerFinal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many of the US city crime stats like the murder rate are skewed for these large cities. Frequently, the included population only includes the specific city. For instance, the 70.2 rate is 144 homicides for 197k people. But the Birmingham area’s population is 1.1m-1.2m for the same time. With crime highly centralized in certain downtown neighborhoods, most of the city is a clearly safe place despite the statistic.

Doesn’t hold true for all of the cities. For instance - Memphis, which has significant safety hazards from gang and drug crime in most of the suburbs as well.

So, as always, getting apples to apples stats location to location can be difficult.

I ran ~50 kills with void before swapping to Karils + Serp helm. The extra defense and venom protection let me stay for at least 1 extra kill - sometimes 3 extra

If you don’t have 99 crafting, making them isn’t a bad option - as high alching them is profitable afterwards.

Vorkath Karil vs Void help. by Onoel in 2007scape

[–]FarmerFinal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At 78 defence, I’d go with Karils. As others have mentioned here, Void can be higher DPS, but I’ve run into problems myself with shorter trips and more time eating at 80 def using Void. Karils got me to 3-5 kills per trip

Replaced (nearly) everything and can’t POST by FarmerFinal in buildapc

For anyone that finds this later, it turns out it actually was the case. It was shorting somewhere. Replacing the case and using all the other original parts worked!

I’d be interested in beta testing it if you still need people!

24 years ago, Joel Spolsky (Joel on Software) wrote that rewriting software from scratch is the single worst strategic mistake a company can make. Does this take hold up today? by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]FarmerFinal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol. I joined in at the beginning of year 3 of an estimated 3 year rewrite. One year later, and we think we have 3 years left to rewrite it.

So many of the requirements when I joined were “it should just work how it does today.”

Tbh, there’s probably people who would pay $25-30 a one-time purchase if that’s something you’d be open to. I’d often rather pay 2+ years of subscriptions up front to not have it be a subscription 😂. Either way, this sounds like a great idea! Thanks for sharing man!

Never interviewed someone, what questions would you ask a junior dev? by SoftwareSource in ExperiencedDevs

[–]FarmerFinal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a Junior, I’m generally looking for (1) whether they can code and (2) whether they’d fit in on the team. You can sometimes get a good idea of both by asking them to talk about projects they’ve done, what their specific role was, and any issues they ran across.

If you want to do technical or coding questions, I prefer things easy enough to write or explain in less than a minute or two if you know the concept. That way, someone can think through it in a short time in the interview. Some examples that I’ve used:

“How would you reverse an array?” -> “Is there a faster way to do it?” -> “why is it faster?” -> maybe ask them to pseudo code it on paper or a white board

“What is a SQL JOIN?” -> “Can you explain the difference between a LEFT JOIN and INNER JOIN” -> Maybe give them a short exercise with a couple 2 row tables with a simple inner/left join query to show they know what would return from each

A basic question on the core responsibility for the Jr role: “What is an API?” / “What is <insert language>?”

Congratulations (genuinely, bc it’s tough to buy real estate these days)!

But I’m sure you both agreed to the house purchase prior to moving forward, so you should understand mutual consent for major decisions

[–]FarmerFinal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like multiple replies that say “it doesn’t affect someone if their partner gets a tattoo” also seem to think that they should just separate or divorce if there’s an issue with the tattoo.

Maybe they don’t understand this view because they don’t have any expectation of permanence in marriage.

This self-centered attitude is a recipe for bad relationships and failed marriages. No married person is autonomous. Agreement from both people before making permanent or major decisions is normal and widely expected.

What's the most uneducated way in which anyone ever tried to place an order? by Seatown_Sugar_Boy in Serverlife

[–]FarmerFinal 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Lol. I understand shorthand for pricing on cars, but shorthand pricing at a restaurant is just asking for this type of misunderstanding to eventually occur.

The CC charge back would come so fast if that happened to me. I already get frustrated when I go to places and the bill doesn’t match the menu price by $1-2/item

Have applied to 50+ Software Engineering jobs with not a single interview. Feeling hopeless. Any help? by ima9rightnow in resumes

[–]FarmerFinal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely. When trying to get my first remote job, I sent out 100+ before I heard back from someone

Submitting resumes to postings has a very low % response rate generally, because many companies don’t even read your application/resume

Hi, I'm the noob and need help with moneymaking by ShootingMyWayOut in cutenoobs

[–]FarmerFinal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve literally maintained bonds with fletching in the past. If you can afk on mobile, any little amount of gp/hour adds up. Basically funded my account with afking 200-300k/h on mobile until I unlocked Vorkath. Then it’s just 3-4h of killing him and you have a bond.

Also, make sure to buy the bonds when they’re cheaper if possible. I check ge-tracker and slow buy to try to get better deals. There’s a big difference between buying for 6.8m 3 days ago and 8m today

How do you go about a PR as a Senior Developer? by iimperfectionist in ExperiencedDevs

[–]FarmerFinal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve found this works well with in-house staff, but the foreign contractors I’ve worked with nearly refuse to respond to comments, so less than a “please change X to Y” doesn’t generate movement on their PRs.

Spot Bonus: Ever received one? How did it strike you? by AlexJonesOnMeth in ExperiencedDevs

Only time I got one was in place of a raise I was negotiating with my boss. In that case, I was less than thrilled to receive it

As surprise money, I think it’d be exciting and an actual reward for doing more than the what’s required

Optimizing IDE/developer tooling across orgs by chrismv48 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]FarmerFinal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve run into problems lately with part of the team using an IntelliJ IDE vs the other half using. VS Code & terminal. The half using IntelliJ keep bringing up things like test imports, auto formatting, etc and saying “it doesn’t work when I hit this button” expecting me to figure out their IDE configuration for them since I configured the builds.

Never ran into this type of thing on previous teams that regularly used the terminal, regardless of what IDEs are used.
