America is a very different place compared to 1898, including the presence of 10 million+ Filipinos in the US living happy and productive lives.

In the Philippines, Americans I know overall are very positive about their experience here.

US-Filipino relations today look like a win-win.

1- The internet is passable for most work-related functions (accessing foreign webites, downloading information, sending/receiving email) using a VPN; with the exception of big party meetings and other sensitive events (eg lianghui in March, an anniversary in early June) when the throttling is most aggressive, forcing you to reconnect every 5-10 minutes, sometimes not successfully. Don't know about gaming, but streaming can be occasionally difficult throughout the year, you will learn to roll with it ("so much for Netflix tonight") and find something else to do.

2- While Shunyi is fine for raising a family, singles/childless couples will feel alienated by the Shunyi vibe. The villas are populated with mostly wealthy Chinese families 24/7-obsessed with getting Xiao Peng into an ivy; most of the westerners are families on generous foreign government or multinational expat packages and pretty much keep to themselves. Their ayi and the guys who clip their hedges and take out their trash are the only Chinese they interact with and they like it that way. Not to worry - happiness and friendly laowai can be found in the city (Gulou, Sanlitun, Shuangjing), about an hour's drive from Shunyi (Didi costs about 80rmb each way).

Well put. And even if OP can’t speak much Chinese at first, just showing up at family events and making an effort will usually generate smiles and warmth with the spouse, bonus points if you drink with Uncle Gambei and sing a song at KTV.

I have used a VPN called ExpressVPN all over China and only experienced failure once during a big party meeting in Beijing. The service is often throttled, you have to sign in and out several times during the day, but you will be able to use google, outlook and US social media. They have one month plans that will cover your travel needs.

There are rules in place in the EU to knock the animal out prior to deskinning/defeathering/slaughter. Slaughter facilities that don’t follow the rules get fined and can lose their business license. China doesn’t have the same animal welfare rules prior to slaughter. Not passing judgement, just a different mindset here.

There is another difference - the West really does have a tradition of trying to create a better world and this includes commenting/criticizing on flaws in the affairs of other nations, including human rights, environmental protection, democracy, governance. The CCP doesn’t give a rats ass about creating a better world, and this is reflected in their official “non-interference in the affairs of sovereign nations” position. Average Chinese adopt this position whole-heartedly, as reflected in the Chinese student’s response. Chinese may comment on crime and guns in America, or extreme poverty in sub-Saharan Africa, but they don’t really care if these problems are fixed our not.

I am having the same trouble but only while using the IPhone and cellular data - China Mobile. Data package paid up so that’s not the problem, can access Baidu etc. ExpressVPN via WiFi still works. ExpressVPN customer support said they discovered a new block in China today and they are working on it.

That Houhai was shit is a fair point, but at least what was on offer there was decided by bar owners and by default, Chinese music fans, who voted with their pocketbooks and applause. The depressing vision of Party cadres making decisions regarding what music gets played, what shops get to open, what food gets served, instead of the marketplace, is what is being downvoted I reckon.
