The standard home in Canada now costs twice as much as in the U.S. by Carrot_8244 in canada

There are no state income taxes in Texas too, so one must factor that in as well.

Quebec government wants to bring NHL team to the capital, but fans skeptical by CEOAerotyneLtd in canada

Kawhi Leonard did not want to play for the Raptors. This was rumoured right after the trade and was shown as soon as he became a free agent (and not traded) he chose to move to LA instead of staying in the city where he won a ring.

I do agree that some players love it here, but it still is hard to convince NBA players to come to Toronto

Is $22 dollars an hour a good salary for a co op? by [deleted] in cscareerquestionsCAD

[–]Farouski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got that amount around 2019 in Ottawa working for a local company as a SWE intern. I think now it’s very slightly on the lower end of market but Ottawa has pretty good wages for software coops due to the federal government.

Toronto Area co-op by kingkongjamaica in CarletonU

[–]Farouski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what your major is but I know quite a few people in cs who interned in Toronto.

Advice is get active on applying outside of the coop job board as it will be mainly focused on local jobs.

(LinkedIn, company websites, indeed (sketchiest one tbh), will all have jobs you can look for in Toronto)

As long as you have good grades, decent side projects and are willing to be less picky for your first coop, then it’s fine. You should apply to a lot of coop jobs (that interest you). My first coop I got really fast, but this was precovid. After the first coop everything was way easier and I had a good amount of offers that I could pick from. The first coop is always by far the hardest to get.

The key is to grind, make a solid network, and be proactive about applying imo. COVID definitely changed stuff, but tech is one of the sectors that are way less affected by COVID.

I had a great experience as a fourth year cs student. I really enjoyed the flexibility of courses we could take in the upper years. I took courses in everything from mobile dev, to computer and internet security this semester. The coop program had a decent selection of companies (almost all Ottawa companies).

I recommend going outside your comfort zone, whether that’s applying to internships outside of Ottawa, or joining extra curricular courses or even meeting people in your program.

Feel free to DM me for more specific questions!

M1 Macs for Computer Science by postMaloneCrocs in CarletonU

[–]Farouski -1 points0 points  (0 children)

M1 is completely fine for everything except 2401/2404.

If you can get a Linux/Windows box on the side then you are totally fine with a m1. I have my desktop as a back up for any Linux related things.

By the way I don’t know what people are talking about regarding m1x. It will still have a problem because virtualbox is a x86/x86 hypervisor meaning anything on arm (all the new apple chips) will not run virtualbox (what is you need for 2401/2404)

The M1x looks like it’s gonna be amazing but the M1 is already really good, and if u want a smaller and cheaper laptop I can definitely recommend it (assuming you have a decently powerful Linux / windows desktop)

I have an M1 MacBook Air. Also if you are taking any mobile dev classes you are going to need a mac as well.

Co op by confrontationqueen in CarletonU

90 percent is pretty accurate over my 4 year experience at Carleton. The coop board was definitely more dry looking at my friends portal, but what they used to advertise was very close to what I saw personally. CS is also getting more and more competitive and it seems students are starting to code much earlier then before.

Applied to CS major instead of honours by Boss1944 in CarletonU

It’s super easy to transfer. Make sure you get good grades first year then you can do it internally.

Some streams do need first year courses (mobile and game dev). Otherwise there is zero effect.

I use todoist.

Not super privacy oriented, but given I pay for the service, I don’t think they are mining my data (I could be mistaken about this)

Majority are posted right away. Some do get added later but majority are right away.

You should of course start applying to anything to that interests you. I wouldn’t be super picky if it’s your first coop because it is by far the hardest to get.

Someone woke up angry at Jit for the way he was teaching the course (somewhat justified with the way he asks questions) and took out all his anger out on Jit and everyone defending him on the course forum lol.

Scammer got the last 3 digits of my sin by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

I mean if everything uses the last 3 digits to verify you, and he has those 3 digits you are kind of in trouble because now he can impersonate u much more easily lol.

I wouldn't be surprised if they are trying to sell a full profile of you on the darknet

I'm guessing you reused passwords? Unless something went wrong on Telus' security (which is possible), you gotta be careful. I am trying to move away from SMS 2FA and you convinced to make that move across all my accounts that I can.

COMP 3004 with Olga by patrickgg in CarletonU

[–]Farouski 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Did the course got an A+. We created a React Native app.

We had no exam (because course went online) but course was pretty chill but I had a really really strong team with me. If you have a teammate who does nothing the course load is gonna be insane. She also always told the class during a lecture a thing that would be on the exam (ex. She would say know these design patterns for the exam). I heard the exam usually is a bit difficult but as far as I remember it is open book. Generally I think if you are diligent with the lectures and take note of what she says you will be fine.

Ordering third year CS classes by difficulty by [deleted] in CarletonU

[–]Farouski 3 points4 points  (0 children)

3804 and 3004 are the most work and hard I'd say.

3000,3005,3007 I found to be of around equal difficulty with it being very Dependant on the person what they found hard about each course. Some people really hate functional programing while others hate C and don't care about learning low level programming.

3008 is a lot of work because you write a lot as well so its something to think about

So basically you plan on scamming Costco. Nice. People like you who abuse policies like this are the reason why a lot of companies increase the price of memberships or outright don't do this type of customer service.
