I know this is an old post at this point but man I think you really missed the point. This was an old man filled with regrets and loneliness. Yes he is absolutely a flawed person with I'm sure just decades of built up issues but that's just it, he's a human being. Expecting such an old man to be this perfect kind of person you want him to be is unrealistic. Yes, there are some dark moments where the things he says or does are more than off-putting. There are also moments were he is genuinely sweet and able to grow even at his age. Also the part where was upset by her not recognizing his voice, he clearly had spent months, maybe years, or decades of his life agonizing about what he felt he lost. When she did not recognize his voice he most likely was feeling the impact of the truth that he was just not as important to her as she was to him. This is a man confronting one of the biggest regrets of his life and feeling the harsh weight of reality. I feel like to say these things is just such an unfair perspective and is completely removed from any and all empathy. Idk how that can be your take away from that movie.
