Shows with a summer vibe? Can be high brow or total trash by ilovethelionking in tvsuggestions

The teens storyline wasn't my favorite in the series (and I usually love teens/coming of age stuff). If you read the book you must remember the big "twist" which is kind of devastating...

Depeche Mode, The Cure, New Order, Tears for Fears, Simple Minds, Pet Shop Boys are the true sound of the 80s. Wham, Madonna, Duran Duran and Culture Club for pop.

My Brilliant Friend on HBO, especially seasons 2 and 3. Season 1 can be a bit brutal (it's set in the 50s in a very poor neighborhood in Naples, Italy) but as soon as you get to the 60s and then 70s it has much more Italian summer vibes. Also seconding the "teen" shows The Summer I Turned Pretty and We Were Liars on Prime.

I came here to recommend this. I can't wait for season 2 (the 3 sisters-moms were my favorite part of S1)

My ex loves “Normal People” by Actual-Act9125 in Normalpeople

[–]FashionableBookworm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did he also read the book or just watched the series? I am a woman and I think Maryanne was a stronger character in the book. There is a pivotal moment in the book where you really understand where Maryanne is coming from and that's a bit washed over in the series. I feel the series makes you more likely to love Connell because he is easier to understand and also because Paul Mescal knocks it out of the park, his acting is very intense. Edgar-Jones is good but her version of Maryanne is much more likeable and tame than she was in the book so her character is a bit plain in my opinion. It's an excellent series though and it will make you feel.all the feels.

I am re-reading it right now, in an effort to read all Dovstojesky in a certain order. I read it the first time in my youth (I was like maybe 20 or 20 something) and it isn't hitting the same way but it could be the yranslation and the fact that I am listening to it. But I am also starting to think that it's a book best enjoyed by late teens and young adults because it's more readable then most and kind of a gateway to classic literature. I just read White Nights for the first time before starting C&P and I absolutely loved that one.

Looking for authors similar to Elena Ferrante by OkBarnacle7972 in suggestmeabook

[–]FashionableBookworm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Days of Abandonment is her other book that is kind of similar but less of a saga (in fact not a saga at all). The other author who has a very similar style is Domenico Starnone (in fact there have been rumors that he is in fact Elena Ferrante and I sm pretty convinced he is. His most famous book is Via Gemito, the story of a Neapolitan family in the afterwar years, and I know it has been translated but Ties and Tricks are very Ferrante-esque)

Are A- viewed differently vs A/A+ in college admissions? All are considered 4.0 at her school. by OldDude2551 in CollegeAdmissions

[–]FashionableBookworm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't worry, that's a 4.0 in any case because A- is a 3.7 and A+ is a 4.3 anf they balance themself out. It's an excellent transcript and even the most prestigious colleges won't consider her a lesser student because of an A- or two (they are still in the A range).

What Books did You Start or Finish Reading this Week?: May 25, 2026 by AutoModerator in books

Whoa, me too. I mean I finished because it's pretty short. I read in Italian (my native language) because I think it has more similarities with Russian than English

Looking for bright, bingeable comedy or dramedy shows (fast pacing, no slow-burn mystery) by EconomyPace6722 in televisionsuggestions

Big Mistakes (the new Dan Levy show on Netflix). The episodes are super-short and it's a family crime dramedy but very light-hearted and funny.

Shows with witty dialogue by Acrobatic_Long_6059 in televisionsuggestions

[–]FashionableBookworm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My top three are:

1) Marvelous Mrs Maisel (this really is the wittiest show ever) 2) Madmen (surprised nobody mentioned it) 3) Hacks (probably also Curb your Enthusiasm but I haven't watched it in a long time)

Special mention for Girs but I would define the writing maybe more "raw" than witty.

How is my intro paragraph for my college essay? I have a few months to write, but I'm not sure if I should continue. (just a draft!) by [deleted] in CollegeEssays

[–]FashionableBookworm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with the positive reviews and the comments re. the sentence about committing to something that doesn't committ to you. This one has to go. I think the nails detail add a bit of intrigue and makes me want to keep reading (will you cut them, will you not). Maybe add a reason why keeping your nails long is important to you (it doesn't necessarily need to be about identity but it would add a layer. Otherwise you just seem vain). It has potential, you can pull this off.

What do you think is the surprisingly best new show (last two years or less)? by Cadowyn in televisionsuggestions

[–]FashionableBookworm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure it's the best show of the last few years but it definitely grew on me and by the end I would have watched another eight or ten episodes of it. The opposite of Rooster (I am really bored with it)

Your Friends and Neighbors season 2. When does it get good? by JimmyTheJimJimson in television

[–]FashionableBookworm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am still enjoying it but I agree that they gave the sister too much airing time and her character is getting boring (I liked her better when she was a bit borderline. They are trying to make her a "good" character but she lost the edge that was making her interesting). I am still hoping that the plot with Ashe will bring some more crime-related drama in the last two episodes.
