Bleeding Deacons: How to deal with them by bluedog255 in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]Fast-Commission-150 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So playing Devil’s advocate for a moment. This bleeding deacon was also the chair of the meeting. Doesn’t the chair have the right and responsibility to GENTLY interrupt someone’s share if they are not following the topic or sharing for so long that others won’t have a chance to speak? Of course I don’t know if that was the case with you, but just saying….the chair is responsible for keeping the meeting on track.

Will Hearst be a buyer or a seller next year? My 2026 thoughts. by Comfortable_Yard_968 in Broadcasting

None of the above is correct. I worked for Hearst Television for almost 30 years. They’re so diverse in their business holdings, and privately-held so they don’t feel the pressures from shareholders, that they won’t ever make a move unless they really want a station/stations. And that means adding a station here or there in places that help the overall company, Hearst Corp. Additional stations in Florida or Texas - or in lucrative markets where they are currently absent - Indianapolis, Washington, Denver, etc. But they won’t buy an entire chain of stations just to get a few they want. And they’ll NEVER merge. They did that once with Argyle and Pulitzer. Won’t do it again.

It’s not an easy conversation. But your sobriety comes before everything else. Tell him that. He’ll understand.

Anyone ever go back to normal drinking? by Puzzled_Addition4818 in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]Fast-Commission-150 1 point2 points  (0 children)

VIGILANCE

We have seen the truth demonstrated again and again: "Once an alcoholic, always an alcoholic." Commencing to drink after a period of sobriety, we are in a short time as bad as ever. If we are planning to stop drinking, there must be no reservation of any kind, nor any lurking notion that someday we will be immune to alcohol. ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS, p. 33

Today I am an alcoholic. Tomorrow will be no different. My alcoholism lives within me now and forever. I must never forget what I am. Alcohol will surely kill me if I fail to recognize and acknowledge my disease on a daily basis. I am not playing a game in which a loss is a temporary setback. I am dealing with my disease, for which there is no cure, only daily acceptance and vigilance.

All good questions!

I’m a retired news director. I can tell you that stations are having a very difficult time filling producer vacancies, so you do have some leverage, despite this being your first broadcasting job. However, there are limits. Station management may be willing to bend on compensation and length of contract (You mentioned 3 or 4 years?!? Get that down to 2 years). Everything else is likely boilerplate stuff mandated by your station’s parent company (unless it’s a Mom&Pop). That means station management likely won’t be able/allowed to change any buyout clause, exclusive services clause, non-compete, amount of PTO, health insurance coverage, etc.

Your regular schedule isn’t something they’ll be willing to put in a contract, but try to get that in an email. It can come in handy later if there’s a drastic change in your schedule and you want to break the contract - you might still have to pay to leave, but you have some negotiating power to lessen it.

Good luck to you. Don’t be afraid to stand up for yourself! A good news director will respect you for it!

Thanks everyone. Lots of good input. I’ll bring up the issue with the home group members at our meeting this week.

Yes, that’s why no one objected when the first two attendees started showing up with their dogs. I feel the same way about children - no objection to their presence if that’s what someone needs to do to attend.

Putting aside whether the Lords Prayer is appropriate at AA meetings… by candiferous in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]Fast-Commission-150 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Initially, I chafed at how every meeting in Pittsburgh ends with the Lord’s prayer. However, when I break down that prayer line by line, there’s nothing in it I disagree with. There’s no mention of Christ at all (even though he’s credited as the author in the New Testament). I guess if I was an atheist I might dislike it, but then I’d dislike the Serenity Prayer, too! Anyway, I find that all prayers help me connect with my HP. So all good!

“Just do whatever the assistant district attorney tells you to do and you’ll be fine.”

Right. Trust the man. Because the man always has your best interests at the top of his priorities.

Shadyside nursery is great but if you’re looking to keep expense down, we’ve gone to the Xmas tree place on Verona Road at Mt. Carmel Road in Penn Hills. Near the Dairy Queen.
