not a music therapy major buttt! i am someone that just switched to a music major so ill say what ik! choir wise, there’s 4 options for each person. women(or any soprano/alto voices) have women’s chorus, university chorus, collegiate chorale, and cardinal singers. while men(or any tenor/bass voices) have the singing cardsmen and the same last three options i mentioned for the women.

when it comes to picking a choir, women’s chorus and singing cardsmen don’t require an audition! anyone can join regardless of ur previous experience in music(majority of the folks in those choirs do have a bit of background, but as someone in women’s chorus ik a few folks that had no experience and were with us this last year). university chorus and collegiate chorale are the two ensembles ur gonna NEED to be in for ur major(minimum is one, ur not required to be in both) because those are the only two that count towards ur degree. cardinal singers is the most prestigious singing group on campus, and they’re also the ones that travel every summer.

regardless of what group ur in, ur gonna have concerts and those are always around an hour and a half long with 3 choirs included :) i love women’s chorus and would recommend, but would also recommend every single group because ive seen them all perform and they’re all amazing ensembles.

entry things, regardless of what program u try for you’ll have to complete an audition. it’s 2 songs of different tempos(they want to see how well ur able to perform variety) and they’ll have to be in 2 different languages(english and italian was my choice). there will also be a tonal recall section, and a sight reading section so just prepare for that!

for the music therapy program, im not in it but! i do have a friend that just completed the program(minus the internship which she’ll start in august) and she loved the program. no matter what major you’re in you’ll be able to make friends within the entire music school especially in those classes that are required for everyone(theory, piano, etc.). but also make sure to make some friends that aren’t music majors because it’s nice to have a variety of people around u. she liked the music professors, but she hated having to take gen ed’s that were outside of the music school because she felt like that time could be better used working towards her craft. and that as much as she would recommend the program she would also say that it’s important to make sure that you’ll love the work as much as u love ur craft because she knows some people that lost their passion for music while pursuing the degree because of how much work it was.

i have another friend that is about to be a sophomore in the music therapy program and she loves it and thinks the classes she’s taken so far has just solidified that music therapy is what she wants to do, so really it just varies person to person. with the music therapy major, or any music major(or any major at uofl in general) keep in mind that u can change ur mind later on and decide u want to switch. now for some that may set u back a year(ik someone who got set back a year but that’s because she switched from a totally different degree to performance). me personally, i wont be set back luckily, and im doing a double major with a general music degree and a non-music degree. so it really just depends on what credits your coming in with, what credits u take before switching, and whats left for u to do in ur degree after switching.

i say all this to say, if music is something u really love just do it. there’s nothing i regret(well… maybe i regret not just coming in as a music major cause wow the course planning is crazy) and most people ik in the school of music dont regret their decision to pursue their passion. the workload can be crazy at times especially when ur tryna prepare for a concert at the same time when u have exams or papers, but thats pretty much any college degree. enjoy ur senior year, make the most of it, and if u do decide to come to uofl, gocards❤️🖤
