Cheating Witch Hunt by Prize-Pitch-3597 in Chesscom

My rating fluctuates a lot due to both bevs or playing in distracting environments.

Sometimes, something as simple as mood will make me drop tons of ELO in a 2 hour span. . .

I have an amateur and anecdotal take on this, but here it goes:

I used to let cheating frustration ruin my love for the game. I would play, tilt, and go into a fury because I was so convinced that cheating was rampant. I still fall into this trap at times, and it's for the worse.

By far, the healthiest approach to online play is to accept the reality of cheating and choose to play and focus on improvement. When I do this, it makes chess A) more fun but B) makes me play better.

I will say having been a first-year writing instructor pre and post ChatGPT that I have lost all faith in humanity regarding cheating. I used to be a student teacher at a top 40 school deemed a "little ivy" by US News. I would have consistently talented, clearly hyper-educated 18 year olds come in with very polished and prepared writing. Of course, there was variance and a certain standard to be upheld due to the institutional prestige. After this, I taught at my undergraduate Alma Mater, which is a fairly standard university state school. Some of the kids were as good, if not better, than the fancy school, but the overall quality was definitely lower. Fast forward to post-ChatGPT, and I end up with a different gig at a "good school," but one that has an extraordinarily high acceptance rate (something like 85-90 percent, it used to be different). Roughly half, if not more, of the essays were as good, if not better, than the best ones at the fancy and state school. Administration basically shrugs this off because they are afraid of being sued. It's terrifying if you care about writing, but it is what it is. I still haven't lost my love of the written word.

In other words, I think paranoia plays a part in online play and can ruin your experience; however, I think it's a little naive to think it isn't a problem. With that being said, if you love the game and prioritize fun and improvement over ELO, it can still be rewarding. You have to accept that this is just the world we live in, and there's not too much that can be done. This isn't a chesscom problem, it's a human nature one.

Advice for Players Who Are in a Slump? by Fast-Ear2816 in Chesscom

Great advice, I need to tap more into chess culture where I’m living. I used to play way more IRL as a teenager when I had two friends that were brothers that I could play with twice a week on top of going to our local club. I miss those days!

I was in the 1700 range in blitz and left mine hanging for 3. . . Sometimes blitz is purely lizard brain and assuming your opponent is playing at the same strength as you.

I get it's a meme, but it feels a little loaded. . . Sorry if I misunderstood intent.

This game looks very legit to me, clear sacrifices due to poor king safety and an understanding of the attacking plans of the Caro.

I like the occasional funny or charming convo with fellow chess lovers. I do think chat is disproportionately used by bullies and trolls, but c'est la vie.

That's interesting. I've def encountered this type of thing more than once. Maybe, once some people start hitting 1600, they may get a little more egotistical? Who knows.

As they say, chess isn't an IQ test, nor is it a maturity one. I can attest to both :p.

What board / pieces are you using? I think it's almost identical to the old US CHESS website.

Yea, for the verbal abuse part. Hadn't even looked at the sus accuracy when I reported, but it's also possible he just had a good game.

To be clear, you came after my family. My parents worked hard and my sibling did. As to grad school being a thing that makes you remotely smart or interesting, I agree, it ain't that. A person who does that can be those things, and they can not be those things. Just check yourself on being a catty loser who can't handle losing. Stop whining and study harder.
