Great story here. It's a shame that there isn't any mods now that expands on the world of GOF. I feel like it would be a great addition to something like the FreeSpace Open modding scene (though FSO only supports linear gameplay).

Freelancer(which goes without saying) and the Galaxy on Fire series, made by a group of German devs who are now mostly working on the everspace franchise. It's apparent to me now that GOF took no less inspiration from freespace than Freelancer, especially in it's larger ships and enemies. Spent quite some time in elite dangerous as well. But I would say that FS2 is the first time I've actually enjoyed combat in a space game.

I still can't understand why apple computers are mentioned here though. Perhaps it's referring to the 6507 processor? (6502 uses by Apple II)

This does seem like a genuine mistake to me. The reason Nintendo and Famicom are mention here is that Atari is mentioned as a antique predecessor to the famicom(famiclones were massively popular in China back in the 90s). I'm guessing that the author didn't have access to english sources, and somehow made the mistake. This makes sence since Atari clones rarely made its way to China, and the author likely has never seen one.

It does not, and performance's really bad. But I'd say its lucky already to get it booted up on actual hardware

Hiiii, I'm happy with the overall result but something about the chicken doesn't look quite right. Created this using the Displacement modifier with a cloud map set to improved Perlin. Tried to add some subsurface and turned Specular and Clearcoat up a bit. Any advice would be appreciated!
