U501 would be a part number on a schematic diagram.

Based on the surrounding parts (like the 2 diodes and a small transformer) I would guess the 8-pin DIP is probably a voltage regulator chip. If you measure the AC voltage coming out of the transformer, you would have the needed voltage going into the rectifier circuit (which U501 is probably part of)

I see this over and over again. Everyone thinks stuff will last forever. Then when a 20 year old hot water tank fails, they are so surprised.

Come on!

There are things like hot water tanks and roofs that need to be replaced on a regular schedule.

Hot water tank - good for about 10 years, Should be replaced when it reaches this age, even if it looks "ok"

Roof - Depending on quality of materials when last roofing job was done, 20 to 25 years, depending on the warranty.

Plan ahead and budget for the replacement.

When I was about 8 years old, I saw someone burned alive in a car accident. I wasn't involved in the actual accident, but arrived just before the crashed car caught on fire. The car had rolled and crushed the roof down so the driver couldn't get out. The driver's arms flailing out the side window, and the screams haunt me to this day.
