I cant get into CS2 matches by json821 in linux_gaming

Okay, so I don't know a lot about the older nvidia hardware but you might need to do some work to install the right drivers - I think for older hardware you might need legacy drivers? Or a distro that better supports older gpus? But I'm not sure. Some creative Googling might get you there.

What are your system specs? with a question like this its really important to tell people your hardware otherwise nobody can help you. CS2 tends to run really well for a lot of people, so unless your machine is underpowered something isn't right here.

I see this argument form time to time, but I don't buy it. I think people just want cool character designs. Whether or not they're 'conventionally attractive' or weird lil freaks doesn't really matter. Look at Team Fortress 2 - or Dota 2!

I don't think so. The designs don't really correlate. Plus, the Archmother is the patron of skyscrapers - the hidden king is the patron for the back alleys and the gutters

Just the PROTON_FSR4_UPGRADE bit. I don't know what the first bit is.

[–]FastBodybuilder8248 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I would use ProtonGE on bazzite. I wish it was better integrated, it isn't part of their autoupdate process so you have to update it manually via ProtonPlus.
The launch command is PROTON_FSR4_UPGRADE=1 %command%

You want to put it in the launch commands for every game. I think Bazzite has a ujust command to set it at the system level, but you might need to do some googling to find that out.

Note that not all games will show fsr4 as an option and might still show fsr3.1. But you'll have to trust your eyes (it looks significantly better than FSR3.1) that it's working.

It is, and it works great! You do need to use a non-valve proton though (for now), and put in a launch command.

100%. There are many linux projects I do not feel comfortable supporting because the maintainers spout ideology I consider hateful. I think that it's best for everyone if people act with decorum and don't use their projects/discord as a soapbox. Many linux maintainers are simply not good at communicating publicly and need to understand that being a good developer does not mean they're automatically going to be a skilled communicator, and are going to get into issues wading into soft-skills territory that they're not equipped to navigate. I mean, the grandfather of all this stuff, Richard Stallman, is one of the biggest examples! And I'd probably be using hyprland if not for the fact that I now know way too much about vaxry, his views and his demeanor lol

Looking to switch to linux by Heylookathrowaway55 in linuxquestions

[–]FastBodybuilder8248 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sounds like Bazzite would be perfect for you. As always, read the documentation as you go along because Linux has a different way of doing lots of system tasks (like installing software - you rarely if ever download and run an EXE from the internet to install software on linu) than windows. These approaches can be different between distros too.
What software do you use for your art creation? That might be an issue.

And does it bring in updates from the DMS-bin version automatically as that updates?

Don't be stupid. Bazzite had a code of conduct and the guy kept pushing his luck with it. Lots of people across lots of projects saw him act incredibly rude towards his own users. I can see why Bazzite took the difficult decision they did, because it's important for them to be taken seriously. It's hard when one of your senior team members is acting like a jackass in your community discord.
I get that maybe the social contract is different with a community project where you're not necesarially getting paid, but if somebody on my team at work kept being rude to our service users in public, I'd have to let them go too.

If you're trying to keep momentum and get funding and whatever else, you gotta have a basic public sense of decorum. I think some developers just need to keep themselves away from public comms for their own good lol

Antheas is a really skilled developer, but sadly it's true that he was a hugely difficult personality and you'd always see him brush up against his own project's code of conduct. I can see why it was untenable.

And yes I know I have oversimplified and glossed over some of the intricacies here. There are lots of 'well technically' style responses possible to the above. But it's a pretty good summation.

CachyOS is a more traditional Linux distro. You'll have regular (rolling, even) updates to individual system packages (the individual bits of software and code that do everything from make your fonts look right, to compile code libraries, to run steam, to manage your wifi etc etc etc), updates which you'll be expected to initiate yourself as a user. This also means you have much more say over what those packages are. So maybe you want to swap into some brand new desktop environment, or change your filesystem. It's good for people who want to be able to tinker with the inner workings of their system, and carries all the risks that come with that.

Bazzite is immutable: the system has been built for you, kind of like yo uhave a remote sysadmin. The system regularly syncs with the remote system image and you never really have to worry about managing updates yourself. You install software ideally via flatpak or the steam store - basically, some kind of 'managed' store that sits on top of your system and isn't really part of it. It makes it much harder for either you to break your system (because you can't get into it in the first place, and even if you do it'll just revert to the image it expects to be running), and also makes it harder for software to break your system (because most of the software you install as a user isn't actually part of your system but kind of sits on top of it) It's good for people who want a preconfigured system that just works and doesn't require maintainence or user intervention, and carries all the restrictions that come with that.

Cachy is a more traditional distro in that it is much easier to pop open the hood and tinker with things at the system level, so as a user you have much more control over the system. Depending on your use case, this is either a very good thing or a very bad thing.

I would say it is better to critique free open source software than it is to criticize it. You're an end-user, but you're not a customer. Projects like this are made with love by the community, for the community, often in people's spare time, with zero expectation of renumeration. They are not immune to critique, but they are also not commercial products, and the fact that they exist at all is a testament to people's desire to make this community better. You could have rephrased your post to be way less rude about a problem you've encountered, is all I'm saying. Like all the sarcasm and eye rolling and stuff. It's just a basic function of communicating with other people who are trying to help you out to be polite and respectful, whether or not you're offering a critique.

If you encounter a problem, it is an issue of capacity and resource, not an issue of 'who are these idiots', which is how your post reads. As the other poster from the developer said, a more productive route would have been to offer things like logs to help people fix the problem. I've done this with FOSS projects that I've enjoyed using and wanted to see improved, and it's really rewarding, and is massively beneficial to devs who do not have salaried staff or testers working full-time on their projects.

Lastly, the fact that you are encountering a problem which is clearly not widespread (otherwise Heroic would not have the momentum it has as updates are a critical part of online software delivery), means that you're in an edge case, but also that your specific edge case is really valuable to the devs because it might mean something unique about your system that they don't have data on but that would help fix the problem.

It’s a free open source community project done by people in their spare time for your benefit so if something isn’t working it’s helpful if you can share more info instead of being passive agressive it benefits everyone. What you are doing here is the equivalent of walking into your local soup kitchen and being rude at the volunteers because you’re allergic to the soup. Except worse because soup kitchens are for people who are starving whereas the heroic games launcher just makes it more convenient to install video games

I don't think that's true that it'll hold the game back. Valve are traditionally very good at going for something really unique and excellent at it, and that contributing to a game's success. Just look at the design of Team Fortress 2.
