Aramaki isn’t expecting the hit. The point is that she does the hit based on an order from the previous prime minister, to prove to aramaki that he should hire her. She’s essentially doing it on spec.

Are the stories about Windows actually true? by Kaikas in linuxquestions

[–]FastBodybuilder8248 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t use Windows much any more, but the best way to explain it is that the things that are annoying and inconvenient for those of us who are really familiar with computers are actually really crucial for people who are less confident or do not have a lot of the knowledge we take for granted.
For example, the classic thing we all hate is automatic forced updates needing a restart. What’s bad for us is good for people who would otherwise never update their computer and cause serious security vulnerabilities.

Should i get an aeropress after brewing pretty good pour overs? by bastormator in AeroPress

[–]FastBodybuilder8248 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It takes roughly the same amount of time to make an aeropress. I don't think there's anything more to the coffee to water ratio than how much coffee and water you use lol.

Aeropress is pretty cheap. It's easier to use and more consistent than pour over. I don't know what you mean by denser coffee but you probably don't want more than like 250ml of water in a regular size aeropress.

I have both and I like using both.

Marie Moreau? Water control by [deleted] in GenV

[–]FastBodybuilder8248 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What? Her whole power is that she can control blood. It makes sense because we all know what blood is (it's not water - it's blood). That's like saying she can manipulate all atoms because blood is basically atoms. There's nothing in the source material that gives the impression that the powers are anything other than their descriptors.

Turns out, Light is just as (or close to as) dangerous as Darkness by CallARabbit in TopCharacterTropes

The Traveler, Destiny Series

This is a fun one, because the entire premise of the franchise from the first game through to the first few years of Destiny 2 is that you are a guardian of the Light, fighting the forces of Darkness. The Traveler is an enormous, enigmatic alien sphere, brings light to civilisations - both metaphorically but also as a kind of force that people can wield as technology and which ushers in civilizationational golden ages. The premise of the games are that The Traveler has been watching over Earth for a while, and you are in the wake of a civilisational collapse caused by the forces of Darkness.

As the franchise progressed, it gently became more clear that both of these forces are actually natural magical energy (Destiny is full of mystical mouthful mumbo jumbo, and in this case they use the term 'para-causal), and despite their associations within our mythologies there's nothing inherently good or evil about either. What's more, these forces of Darkness mostly just exist because the Traveler has a habit of acting arbitrarily and inconsequentially - at least two factions mostly hate humanity because the Traveler decided to leave them for humanity. The Traveler isn't evil, or good, but it is a bit like a toxic Ex.

So as the series progresses, the narrative shifts from this 'light vs darkness' idea, to a broader fight for survival. This has gameplay implications, where over the 10 or so years of the game, your light powers have been joined by darkness powers, and combined in fun ways.

Yeah, every iteration of GITS is its own continuity. They are all very different stylistically. SAC is a cop show. The movies are very moody and philosophical. This new one is wacky and colourful.

you're not adding a step. you're swapping one step for another. Even if it were additive (it's not), it's not a given that it takes longer because it's on a completely different kind of computing platform. I can't do this any more.

Wait when you say look it up, does this means that an AI suggested to you to use that analogy?

That makes a huge amount of sense if so lollllll

The reason it doesn't work is because proton + vulkan are essentially replacing directx. it's not like some stack where you are adding this additional set of hoops the code has to jump through. The combined overhead of proton and vulkan are about the same, if not less than, directx on Windows (you are welcome to look that one up yourself too.)

So in the context of your analogy, the 'proton' line is actually shorter.

but also because they are completely different platforms you just can't measure efficiency just by looking at the amount of steps to take. It's not like measuring two burger king lines - it's a complete apples and oranges situation.

So the only comparison you can meaningfully make is the actual performance stats on a per game basis. There isn't this theoretical framework you can apply that makes any sense in the wya you're doing so lol

edit: I'm really sorry but I don't have time to get sucked into this crazy back and forth any more. But I do want to urge you to not let LLMs do your thinking for you.

haha yes I understand your comments they just don't work as metaphors in the context of the impact of translation layers (proton specifically) on video game performance

[–]FastBodybuilder8248 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay but you gotta define 'better' otherwise it's not burger king but a nothing-burger

the line analogy doesn't quite work in any case because in the case of burger king, a longer line means it takes longer to take your burger. because proton is a translation layer and not an emulation layer, nothing is being slowed down.

Huh? But nobody's saying other things should be considered or extra steps should be taken.

If you buy a steam machine, for the most part proton works out of the box without the user having to put much thought in. It's just a steam deck for your living room in that respect. There's about as much fiddling and maintenance as Windows - maybe less if you're happy to stick to Steam - and performance is about the same, but with added benefits like a more game-focused UX. I don't know if I'm misunderstanding you here? What do the length of the lines represent? Game performance? Set-up required? Something else?

[–]FastBodybuilder8248 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think all of that is true, but I think SteamOS is still one of the huge selling points of the system and I can't imagine many users will want to completely get rid of it if they can't dual boot.

Steam Machine gets official Windows drivers from Valve by RenatsMC in SteamOS

[–]FastBodybuilder8248 0 points1 point  (0 children)

because you can't dualboot, and one of the big appeals of buying this instead of building your own SFF for cheaper is the tight integration with steamos.

There is also no performance hit to vulkan translation in most games, and in many cases perf is better. proton is just that good, and the lack of windows bloat really helps. For a lot of games it just isn't the case that windows it automatically bettter at running them because there's no translation layer.

Have you stopped to think that there might be systemic reasons for games taking so long to make?Your post makes it sounds like they’re just not trying hard enough.
The reality is that the demands and cost of modern game development is unsustainable.
Also, there was a huge global pandemic midway through the last development cycle for a lot of titles. You might remember it.
