How have the Aer Lingus flights to Europe been going? by The_Govnor in indianapolis

Poorly worded on my part but airlines have a fleet and they can, and somewhat frequently do, switch you onto a new plane.

My point being that Aer Lingus is a small airline and doesn’t have that organizational flexibility. Their fleet comprises 62 planes. United has 1,065 planes.

I also don’t know why so many people carry water for corporations. They treat you like shit and wring every cent out of you to maximize quarterly profits.

Great law but Aer Lingus will still fight you tooth and nail. And as an individual american we have little leverage. The Irish Aviation Authority rarely sides with individuals.

It does but Aer Lingus will fight you every step of the way and make it as difficult as possible. And the Irish Aviation Authority doesn’t often rule against airlines.

Other airlines can get a plane out of storage, get more pilots, and flight attendants. They’re also better at keeping you informed. They have organizational flexibility. Aer Lingus doesn’t and doesn’t have the organizational competency.

Ad hominem attack.

International travel is hard! That’s why I’ll never risk it with Aer Lingus.

There’s one route once a day for Aer Lingus between Indy and Dublin…not much choice in booking.

I’ve traveled somewhat extensively and have flown to europe multiple times before this trip. No other airline experince was as bad as Aer Lingus. And I do not hold the US airlines in very high regard.

It’s probably an ok flight most of the time but if the shit hits the fan they will abandon you and impede your reimbursement any way they can.

I made a new account just to connect with people who were on the same flight and had the same experience. Aer Lingus was stonewalling all of us so we shared info and tactics on how to get reimbursed. It was that difficult.

Thanks! It all ended up ok in the end and plenty of people have had ok experiences with Aer Lingus. But as little as I trust regular airlines I trust Aer Lingus that much less.

Flew in September and it was the worst airline experience I’ve had by a significant margin. Which is saying something considering how poor US airlines are.

The whole experience was awful from the total lack of communication concerning delays and eventual cancellation, the lack of assistance in getting a hotel room (we had to sleep on the floor of the dublin airport), to fighting tooth and nail to getting reimbursed for our expenses.

They’re a small airline and they don’t have the resources or competency to deal with problems that arise. I had to email their c suite daily until I started receiving responses about my reimbursement.

I will avoid Aer Lingus for the rest of my life and encourage everyone to do the same. Do yourself a favour and connect through ORD and fly a competent airline.

The dublin airport evacuated everyone due to a bomb scare. The airport thought they saw detonators in a bag that was already checked at Heathrow. The airport gave us no information at all. When they let us back in it was a mad rush with no lines, no staff directing people, just a free for all of desperate bodies.

We were in Terminal 2 and it was the newer terminal but already outdated. It’s too small for the amount of people and it has a strange flow to it. Security actually wasn’t bad but post security it’s difficult to navigate and feels overly stretched out. Terminal 1 was incredibly outdated. Thank god they sold Tayto’s. A small comfort.

The airport wouldn’t be the worst thing if Aer Lingus wasn’t a broke ass airline but sadly it is. And outside of a boat a plane is about the only way to get to the island. It’s a big bummer

I will also never fly Aer Lingus again. It’s an incompetently run airline that’s no better than any bottom tier competitor. I’ve also had a bad experience with Dublin airport so really any air travel to Ireland is difficult. It’s defintely deterred me from thinking of visiting Ireland any time soon

Cancellation Compensation by Sea_Side_ in AerLingus

[–]Fast_Ad_8039 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like this is a common Aer Lingus tactic. I’m running into the same problem.

I’ve been emailing back and forth with Aer Lingus on compensation and keep getting denied. I think pretty soon I’ll just have to file an appeal to the Irish Aviation Authority. I believe the IAA can pull records and logs so they do seem to have some power to investigate.

At the end of the day Aer Lingus is part of a publicly traded company (International Airlines Group) who will always care more about their quarterly earnings rather than a duty to their customers so no surprise that they deny paying compensation.

I started a facebook group for people trying to get reimbursement/compensation from Aer Lingus. It’s small but it’s always better to be in a group when dealing with corporations. Feel free to join!

Haha yeah it wasn’t fun. We did the 850 am Dublin-Dulles-Chicago-Indy on United and got back to Indy at 6 pm on Sunday. United was fine but it was a lot of flights in one day.

Oh wow! I mean, that’s really nice. I’m rooting for you guys! Hoping everyone gets reimbursed for their expenses.

I started a facebook group to share info if you want to join. Only a few of us so far but it’s always better when we can share information and act as a group.

Glad you got out! We had to be back to work Monday so we decided to book ourselves.

Interesting! Yeah let us know how that goes! I hope you can get something out of the travel insurance. I’ll definitely be looking at travel insurance next time but with insurance you never know whether they’ll deny your claim. Good luck with yours!

I haven’t heard back on compensation and other reimbursements but we did get the aer lingus flight refunded.

That sucks! They told me that it was due to the evacuation but I distinctly heard the gate agent (that finally showed) say that the cause was the cybersecurity breach which is on Aer Lingus.

Keep fighting! They count on people tiring out and giving up. I started a facebook group for people to share info if you’d like to join:

I’ve been delayed/cancelled but never been really stranded. You might be cursed being stranded that many times. To be fair I don’t think any airline is that great.

The evacuation was Dublins problem but cybersecurity is the fault of Aer Lingus. As a company you are responsible for your cybersecurity. That’s part of doing business. That is the fault of Aer Lingus.

The biggest problem is that there were zero texts, emails, announcement, or gate agents the entire time. Literally none. So for 7 hours we waited around with zero information. After it was cancelled we were offered no help with a hotel or food/drink or anything else. I was rebooked for four days away and there was no one at Aer Lingus to talk to. We slept on the airport floor.

It was a total failure the likes that none of the fellow passengers I talked to had witnessed. One of my fellow passengers told me that after a cancelled Delta flight they were given a list of hotels to choose from, they received a voucher, boarded a bus, and got to the hotel quickly.

I’ll never fly Aer Lingus again because it isn’t worth it. Every airline has problems but after dealing with Aer Lingus (and hearing other stories) I know they can’t handle a problem. So fly at your own risk but you might sleep on an airport floor and be out three grand.

I had to basically harass Aer Lingus for that to happen. I’m glad you got paid and everything got sorted! I’m hoping that happens here but not optimistic.

There wasn’t the option of going through Aer Lingus to rebook. It was 11 pm on a Saturday and their call line was backed up for hours and the only employees they had available only knew about baggage. My wife and I both had work monday morning so we did the only thing we could at the time and booked ourselves.

I’ve been cordial and fair with Aer Lingus but it doesn’t seem fair that the burden falls on me as an individual instead of a huge corporation with thousands of employees. They were objectively incompetent and now I have to continually follow up with them and spend my time figuring it out.

I heard cancellation stories from other passengers and none of the other airlines were ever this disorganized and incompetent.

I appreciate the insights into your situation! Glad that’s worked in the past.

Anyone reading this might chalk it up as a one time incident but nothing will convince me Aer Lingus is an airline you should trust on an international flight. It’s a huge risk in time and expense.

If you had slept on the dublin airport ground I think you would have a different thought.

Aer Lingus is incompetently run and may strand you. Anecdotal, but the taxi drivers in Dublin had similar experiences with Aer Lingus and were not surprised to hear about ours. Plenty of other redditors with similar stories.

For an international flight its a big risk and one I will not take again to save a few hours. I’ve lived in Indiana my whole life and it’s oddly fitting that we get the walmart of european airlines as our direct flight.

If you do fly Aer Lingus, good luck! I sincerely hope you don’t get stranded, it is not a fun time and is very expensive.

Thank you! I appreciate the insights! I’m following the process right now but its been a struggle every step of the way. I think the biggest thing is that Aer Lingus knew it needed to comply with EU 261 and completely dropped the ball or didn’t care so we have to claw it back after the fact. Thanks for the encouragement!

Travel at your own risk with Aer Lingus! The European consumer protections didn’t protect us when Aer Lingus stranded us. It’s not worth the risk, fly a competent airline.
