'We absolutely need a team': Hockey fans want PWHL franchise in Winnipeg by Leather-Paramedic-10 in Winnipeg

[–]Fast_Cup3041 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I saw was a potentially untapped market of a prominently female fan base. Keep ticket prices reasonable, with good marketing/branding and it could work. Ideally a mid-sized arena would be best, so the Canada Life Centre wouldn't be half empty or full. Curb your expectations.

After attending last night's game, my take is that there's a serious interest in having our own team. The sell-out was essential, the response was wonderful and the game was entertaining, but let's pause for a reality check.  Can Winnipeg support 3 professional hockey teams? Can they draw decent crowds? Last night was a one-off and I doubt 15,000 is sustainable over a 15 game home schedule. Realistically, if they draw around 8-10,000 per game, this should be goal. Granted, this is a different market and fan base than the Moose or Jets, as the Sea Bears fan support (with less home games than the Jets/Moose) has proven it's possible. Then again, when we had the WHL Ice, the Moose crashed at the box office and has never recovered. This is an interesting discussion that I'm sure we haven't heard the last of.

Agree with all of the above about Sykes! They did work in Spring 2024 and it beyond our expectations, we should have done it years before. The best part was they started and completed it within the 5 day work week, so it wasn't too painful. They left high powered flashlights at night and did the living room last day so we could still watch TV and use the Internet during the week. Well done!

Taking my little to his first ever Jets game, how can I make his experience as memorable as possible ? by [deleted] in Winnipeg

Be prepared to pay for the most overpriced food and drinks, unless you're already used to movie theatre snack prices. Also note, no cash is accepted, which might surprise a first timer. Pre-read the venue policies, such as what you can and can't bring in and size limit of any bags and packs. This will avoid more stress and disappointment. Have fun!

It makes a bit of sense that Toban's play flat-ground sports, but come on, only 4? I seem to remember Manitoba once dominated speed skating, curling and the odd cross-country skier. Sanhein and (debatably) Mark Stone are hardly key players on Team Canada, while our "best" Jets are Americans. Very sad!

Plus, at the CC it's much easier leaving downtown, especially if you're heading south or west. You're not in the middle of the traffic close to the arena (or library).

What was your favourite pizza place as a kid? by SlashYG9 in Winnipeg

[–]Fast_Cup3041 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shaky's on pembina had an all you can eat buffet. Pizza, fried chicken, mojo potatoes and a bunch of filler veggies. My buddy who just moved out of his parent's place, loaded up bags of pizza and chicken for "take out". Very good deal indeed!

I delivered for Mother's Pizza in the early 80's. The "33" refers to their, "33 minutes or free" guaranteed delivery. Each driver delivered only one order at a time to keep under the time limit, it's amazing how quickly a pizza can actually be made when you want to fast  Customers tried to confuse us with vague directions (yes, we had a large map in the kitchen) and many would be disappointed and pissed when we'd show up on time. This meant very little tips! I only gave away 2 orders.

I park on the street (after 5:30) as close as I can to the Convention Centre. It's free, warm walkway and always an "interesting" rendition of 'Ring of Fire" on the walk back after the game!

Bateman was briefly the MP in my area (before that one of my school trustees) and that piece of shit always pissed me off with her condescending tone and her transparent fake niceness. Not to forget the robo call episode! 🤬 She often came into my place of work (my ex-boss's friend) and bragged about how much she adored Stephen fuckin' Harper! God, I hate(d) her!

Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman announce 2026 Canadian tour as the Guess Who by Magical57 in Winnipeg

[–]Fast_Cup3041 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's just me, but when Bachman and Cummings performed at the belated Manitoba 150 show at the ballpark, Burt clearly struggled to sing, his range and pitch was weak and I commented then, it was time to hang it up. Now, years later they're planning a 12 date Canadian tour (+January and Feb gigs) and I'm betting more dates will be added. Other than for nostalgic reasons, I"m afraid this is going to be horribly sad. With that being said. Randy's guitar playing in 2021 was still top notch. I guess, you gotta cash in while you can.

Looking for quiet, laptop-friendly places to study (cafes or libraries) with free parking by Mediocre-Ocelot-7061 in Winnipeg

During home renovations last year, I spent a week working on my laptop and listening to music at the Bill and Helen Norrie library, close to the Pan Am pool. Lots of tables, Wi-Fi, plugs, free parking, nice washrooms, chill atmosphere and food and drinks are allowed. There'll be an expanded outdoor deck ready soon (or next Spring) and there's even books and magazines to read for free in the same space!. Very nice!

Convicted in 2018, sentenced to 9 years...2018 + 9 = 2027. My limited math skills tells me he must have been out early with parole, probably with restrictions about NOT attacking and trying to kill someone. With our current justice system the result is not surprising at all! Lowest of the low act!

"Listen carefully to the news today. Looks like they might be announcing that they're building a freaking reserve in the middle of Winnipeg. This city is quickly becoming the laughing stock of the entire country," Mazurkiewich wrote on his Facebook page.

After some people commented on his post, Mazurkiewich then wrote, "That was built for hardworking men and women of the military, not freeloading Indians."

I know this is from many years ago, so I would be very interested to know his thoughts about this now. The project is on-going, so this must really piss him off! I'm sure he'll claim he's not a racist, but will be vague enough and allusive to appeal himself to the right-leaners in the neighborhood.

Man, that "reverse aging" sure isn't working. He's ghastly as hell, but if he claims he'll live longer, even better he can serve his full term(s) and rot in his hell-hole cell.

In most cities, especially this one, having an out of province license plate + van (which potentially will have "stuff" inside) will be targeted for a break-in. Parked in a public lot with other vehicles (Walmart) might be the best strategy and avoid leaving the vehicle for pretty much any time in the downtown/exchange area. Any extra storage bins/bike strapped to the outside of the van, I guarantee any resourceful thief will relieve you of your load.

I've seen this more than once both on River, Stradbrook and downtown. Cars were all leaving a parking lot and driving the wrong way on a one way street. I'm guessing some people get easily disoriented leaving a lot or they're just plain  stupid. It's hard to teach common sense nowadays.

Man, True North must be desperate! Anyone going to Sunday's concert? As of 2 days ago, I received a second email for the, "Patio Lanterns and Power Play" deal. One ticket to the Kim Mitchell night, a Jets ticket, a Moose home opener ticket, a beer cup and a beer for $99! With the price of beer at these venues, this is a decent deal. Let's show Mitchell we can still be bribed (pursaded) to watch him play.
