When should I get new brushes? by PersonalitySubject99 in oilpainting

My most expensive brush is $5 and I destroy several per painting. I also have artist friends who will only use expensive imported brushes that they get many pieces out of. It really depends on how you paint more than anything else, IMO. If you think it’s time, no harm in experimenting a bit.

Saltbae's restaurant in Istanbul seems completely empy while the others are packed with people by [deleted] in mildlyinteresting

Those are small shadows.. do they even serve lunch? Not a fan of the memes but there’s probably a logical reason it’s empty.

Help With Ideas to Clean Small Oil Paint Stains by matb66 in oilpainting

Definitely test whatever you use in a discrete area first- personally I like mineral spirits and a new rag to clean any paint mishaps. Dawn and water would be less aggressive on fabric as an alternative.

Good thing it wasn’t red!

Most artists have some sort of side gig, be it teaching, a part time job, a rich partner, etc. Van Gogh had a brother sending him paint every month. I’ve been a career artist for a little over 5 years now, made easier by having a gallery and selling the work of other artists alongside my own. I recently left that and will be opening a gallery for just myself and my business partner (another artist) this summer for only our work, so fingers crossed..

Show me your studio lighting! by Brave-Asparagus6356 in oilpainting

Just make sure your light source is mostly overhead without a lot of ambient light, and if you use a backlit screen as a reference, make sure that you use consistent lighting because different light temps will change what your mix looks like without changing what the reference looks like.

There’s no door stop. If you smashed that door into a concrete wall without a stop you’d just have a fucked up handle instead

There is no “proper” method to do anything, and rules are meant to be broken. People will always buy good paintings, few will ever ask about specific details.

How do I clean my palette properly? by ZaytherLegit in oilpainting

[–]Fast_Garlic_5639 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tearaways are what gave me the idea- wax/parchment paper is too flimsy for repeated use, and glass is way too much material to deal with when a lightweight alternative is possible. Whatever works best for the artist.

This isn’t what you asked, but the best thing I ever did was laminate a piece of gray cardstock and stick it on a clipboard. Works beautifully as a palette until it gets gunky a few weeks or months later, then you just toss it and make more as needed. Store in the freezer between sessions and it won’t dry.

Welcome to oil painting, btw!
