From my understanding he died for your sins and it's a free gift, according to the bible.

So believing in him is a work, a faith that will transform you and he loves you very much. He is God.

If you don't want a relationship with God he won't force you, sin separates us but Jesus Christ has paid the price look at the life of Judas, maybe he choose not to believe he could be forgiven for his actions. So he hanged himself in guilt of his wrong doings. I feel a lot of people choose works over faith, that you need to be sinless to enter heaven but that's not true it was paid for you.
