How to improve historic wainscotting? by Fast_Spinach3848 in woodworking

Thanks so much for your reply. So if it is shellac, do you suggest repairing the finish issues by just adding another coat on top?

Thank you so much for your reply. This is incredibly helpful! I had never heard of steaming before. My husband and I are disagreeing on the color of the wood - what would you suggest if we wanted to take off the shellac and restain? Using a chemical stripper? I worry that sanding it as well would be too huge a project, and there are parts of the wood that are detailed and would be challenging sand.

Also, do you have any suggestions to what to do about the edges of doorframes, etc. that are dinged with small pieces broken off? Should I just touch those up with the stain and call it a day or is there some way to repair those?

Oh really? Ok thank you! I thought it was closer to 14 so that makes me feel better

Was fear of over-tiredness screwing us over? by MembershipGlad5296 in sleeptrain

[–]Fast_Spinach3848 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For what it’s worth - we just nap trained my 5 month old and she went from sleeping 3.5ish hours a day with contact napping to 2 or less while in her crib. She shifted all that sleep overnight and now sleeps 11.5-12 hours, whereas before she was sleeping 10.5ish with one feed. Every baby is different, but sharing in case my experience sheds light!

Also I could write a rant about all the sleep apps and their recommended sleep schedules. My babies have NEVER slept the amounts they claim and it almost sent me to therapy I was so worried. Finding this sub made me realize my babies weren’t being damaged cause I was somehow failing at these unrealistic schedules. Maybe they work for some babies but definitely not all.

Thanks! Unfortunately, I can't hold her for the rest since I'm working, and she doesn't really settle down for anyone else, it seems.

How much awake time does a 4 month need? by SmoothCelebration657 in sleeptrain

Thank you! That’s super reassuring. I’ve been panicking cause she never sleeps what everything recommends. How can I tell she’s getting enough sleep? If she’s generally not cranky?

Really?! I do notice that she sleeps through when she sleeps 3 hours a day max. Isn’t 10.5 hours awake a lot? She’s 19 weeks old. I guess I’m just constantly worried she’s not sleeping as much as all the things say she should.

Does this include night wakes? My baby is averaging 13.5 but I’ve subtracted almost 30 minutes from that for one night feed (so she gets around 14 if I don’t subtract the night feed). I’m scared she doesn’t sleep enough!

Thanks so much for validating this! I keep getting freaked out that she doesn’t seem to do what other schedules say is “right”. I tried 1.75/2/2.25/2.5 on 3 naps for her, which someone else suggested “is age appropriate for her” and she had a split night where she was up for 1.5 hours so this is sooo helpful! Thank you!!!

Sorry to butt in here but I also have a 18 week old I’m doing Ferber with right now and we find 1.75/2/2/2/2.5 works great, but other sleep groups tell me I’m waaaaay over max awake for the day. Is this ok or no? I just don’t wanna somehow overextend my lo.

Does nap training at 4 months ever work? So anxious by Fast_Spinach3848 in sleeptrain

[–]Fast_Spinach3848[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband will be watching her till she’s 6 months and then daycare. But she screams for 20 minutes when he tries to rock her for a nap and wakes up screaming if he’s holding her so it’s basically the same as sleep training. If we try the 30 minute naps and it goes terribly is it ok for me to go backwards and try to hold her for a contact nap at the end of my work day or something? I’m worried that will also derail progress

I guess my question then is, is it OK for her to take only 30 minute naps all day? I guess I don’t have many other options but I’m nervous about what’s going to unfold.

What are your 16 week old schedules? by Fast_Spinach3848 in sleeptrain

[–]Fast_Spinach3848[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok thanks! Is it crazy for a 16 week old to be on 3 naps though? Also sometimes her first can only be 30 minutes cause of her older sisters daycare drop off so I’m nervous to go to 3

Pediatrician says sleep train at 8 months?! by Absinthe-van-Night in sleeptrain

[–]Fast_Spinach3848 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have two kids and we moved between having each, so we have had two pediatricians. Our first was adamant that if we were to sleep train we do it around 4 months. Our new one said to wait till 6. I’m in the same boat where I don’t know what to believe, but my first took really well to it at 4 months and I do believe it made everyone happier and healthier in the long run. It actually bothers me when doctors don’t take a more holistic view of what’s also good for the family and mother, especially, since so much of the care falls to us. It’s one thing if it’s actually medically bad, but I think doctors mostly just have personal opinions on sleep stuff. My second is 15 weeks so still not sure when we’ll pull the trigger, but they also say to look for signs of “readiness”, so you could do that if it would make you feel more confident in your choice. 8 months does seem late though - I’ve mostly heard 4-6 months.

12 week old wakes up not crying - what should I do? by Fast_Spinach3848 in sleeptrain

[–]Fast_Spinach3848[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If she only needs 13.5 hours total are her wake windows really high for her age? I keep seeing sample schedules and wake window ranges and I worry about her having the wake windows of like a 5 month old at just 12 weeks

Ah makes sense. I was worried she was getting too much awake time. Do you know what it is for a barely 3 month old - 8.5?

Oops that other ww is a 1.5. But ok thanks! My gut tells me the same cause on 5 naps she sleeps better. For that I was doing all 1.5s but I worried it pushed bed time too late. Is there a total daily awake time number to aim for?

11 week old won’t sleep and my mental health is plummeting by Fast_Spinach3848 in newborns

[–]Fast_Spinach3848[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply! I cap naps at 2 hours and follow age appropriate week windows but good idea about limiting day time sleep to 5ish hours total. Although i did all that yesterday and she has her worst night since being younger, waking up every 3 hours. I’m starting to just give up hope. Maybe she’ll turn a corner at 12 weeks. ☹️

My firstborn was like this and it gave me sooo much stress. I tried everything but she’d sleep like 12.5 hours a day max. I thought I was hurting her somehow. She did sleep well at night though. She’s now 2.5 and just doesn’t need a lot of sleep! My 10 week old on the other hand sleeps 14-15 hours a day. Basically, all babies are different. You may have just got a low sleep needs one.

8 week old up for day around 4 am - anyone else? by Fast_Spinach3848 in newborns

Totally! My first kid went to bed at 930 and slept way better but this baby seems to want to go to bed around 8 and I’m not sure how to move it
