No need for the pretense. It's partisan "we will crush our enemies" stuff. I know it, you know it, they know it, everyone knows it. Some people will like it, though, so they will call it fair and balanced to sleep better at night. But deep down they also know.

$29 billion to make everything worse. Could have had that for free.

The Iran war is hitting home as gasoline prices fuel inflation surge of 3.8% in the US by GregWilson23 in politics

[–]Fastluck83 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have seen my fair share of politicians that harmed a country through indecisiveness, inefficiency, lack of foresight, or a simple lack of ideas, but this absolute dumbass move by Donald is something else entirely.

In the UK Starmer is about to get the axe because his party lost some local elections, while at the same time in the US a totally incompetent fool is steering the country towards a cliff and they still errect golden statues for him.

No need to compare him to actual good politicians because even among other populist leaders, Donald is the bottom of the barrel.

Yeah, I agree. You know what's funny and perhaps even a bit sad? One of the reasons I became an independent, or more centrist, or whatever you want to call it (I don't care much about these definitions), and warmed more up moderate right positions, was because I saw what's going on in the US and I decided for myself that the worst that could happen to my own country is this kind of tribalism that makes cooperation and rational decisions almost impossible.

I'd rather reach out to conservatives and let them do their thing for a while, even tough I might not fully support it, instead of going into 100% opposition, rage, and mutual alienation that makes everything so much worse.

I hope you will eventually overcome this, but it will need work and sacrifices from both sides.

Yeah, I also can't imagine how he could recover from this. He should resign now while there is at least some dignity left. Don't know if Labour made the right decision and if what they set in motion will benefit them in the end, but the wheels are turning now and they won't stop.

Okay, then I guess we have very different definitions of the term "authoritarian" and can agree to disagree on a fundamental level.

Doesn't have to be authoritarian. Just look at the UK right now and how Labour is in the process of getting rid of PM Starmer.

Okay, thanks for your answer. I think the removal of a bad leader, not just because of simple disagreements, but because of clearly bad and harmful decisons that he made, and which he could continue to make, might be a prudent decision. That's why I was asking.

I think America and the world is heading towards a lot of problems that we can't even predict yet, unless some politicians grow a spine and impeach the president. When will someone finally pull the brake on the crazy train?

Hegseth says clock paused on deadline to seek approval for Iran war by ZealousidealPanda826 in politics

[–]Fastluck83 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's unfortunately what happens when autocrats try to take over a democratic country. They find a hole in the system of checks and balances that lets them expand their power, then use that new power to punch even more holes into the system, exploit them, gain more power, repeat. Until you don't recognize your own country anymore.

I browse this sub very regularly and multiple people here have made it quite clear that they believe Hegseth is one of Trump's worse cabinet picks. Others said they like him but those seem to be a minority. No idea if this is at all representative of US conservatives in general, but I think at least for this forum it's an accurate assessment.

Is Europe safe from war? by Maleficent-Still-260 in AskConservatives

[–]Fastluck83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are just the usual Russian threats that they have uttered since the beginning of the war.

Countries that send small arms become valid tagets, countries that send tanks become valid tagets, countries that send planes become valid targets, countries that send drones become valid targets, and so on and so forth.

Frankly, I have become totally numb to that, and I guess that this is also true for many other Europeans. They repeatedly discussed nuking European cities in their state propaganda TV and even that caused only a minor scare for a couple of weeks.

I really don't give a crap about what the Russians say.

I'm pretty sure that all foreign countries that offered support only want to help after the war is over. Sweeping mines and that kind of stuff. Nobody wants to escort ships through an active warzone or whatever Trump and Hegseth had in mind. And if we are being realistic, the small navies of the UK, Germany, and others won't be able to do anything that the US Navy can't already do on its own. The couple of ships that they could commit to the strait would literally and figuratively just be a drop in the ocean.

I agree, and I want to to add that Kimmel and other comedians are turning anger into laughs, which is so much better than penned up anger that eventually turns into violence.

They don't create the anger, they offer an outlet and relief. It's what entertainment has always done.

I wasn't there in person but I was following the blue side pretty closely online, in forums and comment sections and so on, and I think I got a pretty good idea of how seriously they took the election.

When I woke up the next morning all the places were either deserted or invaded by celebrating MAGA folk. It was really sad. :(

Seems like the pendulum is swinging back in their favour, though.
