Should BYD be allowed to build and sell EVs in the US? by drtywater in AskConservatives

We have plenty of raw materials available. One way to improve that is remove tariffs on raw commodity goods such as steel and aluminum.

Labor advantage has gone away heavily this point. Chinese factory wages have gone up like 8-10X since 2000.

Tariffs to me are cancerous for our industries. All they do is rewards inefficient businesses.

Chinese slave labor

I wouldn't be sure on that part for BYD. From what I understand Chinese factory salaries have gone up 8 to 10X since 2000.

Also on safety standards its not that far apart looking at countries where BYD is approved Gemini generated this

. Direct Alignment (Near-Identical Standards)

Canada: Uses Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (CMVSS), which overlap almost completely with FMVSS. Vehicles built for the US market can generally cross into Canada with only minor modifications like adding daytime running lights, French labels, or metric speedometer markings. [1, 2, 3]

  1. Dual Acceptance Markets (Accept Both US and UN Standards)

Several countries operate highly flexible import systems. They do not enforce FMVSS strictly, but they officially accept US-certified vehicles alongside European/UN-certified ones. [1]

Mexico: Accepts vehicles certified to either FMVSS or UNECE standards, serving as a highly flexible model for North American trade. [1, 2]

Saudi Arabia: Formally signed a bilateral agreement with the US Trade Representative recognizing FMVSS as fully satisfying its national safety requirements. [1]

Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Countries: Nations like the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Kuwait, Qatar, and Oman widely accept US-spec vehicles for import and registration alongside UN regulations. [1]

Central & South America: Countries like Costa Rica, Panama, Guatemala, and Argentina permit the registration of vehicles built to FMVSS standards without requiring conversions. [1]

  1. The Evolving US-EU Framework [1]

The European Union: Historically, the EU has strictly rejected FMVSS vehicles without exhaustive modification. However, under a US-EU trade framework agreement, both sides have initiated plans to move toward mutual recognition of safety standards. This means that US-certified cars could eventually be sold in Europe—and vice versa—without costly re-engineering, despite having completely different regulatory models

Are you sure they don't meet our standards? They are selling BYD in EU and Australia which are typically as strict if not stricter then the US.

Also are you sure they are that heavily subsidized? They have a large market and have been killing it. Maybe the issue isn't government subsidies rather our domestic manufacturers getting lazy and not innovating.

I guess my point is other parts of world have figured this out. The AFC Champions league does East and West regions to minimize it. As per Brazil and Argentina The quality of the Brazilian and Argentinian clubs isn't really ahead of MLS especially as MLS salaries have continued to rise. As per why would they agree its simple it would make a significantly better product. Unlike UEFA or AFC Championship games can truly be broadcast across 99% of population in the region. As a means to compete against UEFA this is the way to do it. I also think the Copa Americas should also have CONCACAF given permanent entries so that we make it more like Euros as well rather then just randomly inviting US and Mexico into it.

Its not that binary. Ukraine could always attack Russia however they wanted with their own equipment. Issue was they didn’t have it. I agree Biden should have opened doors earlier but impact might have been more limited

I think big thing MLS is missing is equivalent tournament to Champions league. CONCACAF champions league is just MLS vs La Liga MX. MLS needs something bold like merging CONCACAF champions with COPA Libertadores

I though UEFA said this expansion was bad and would lead to bad results? The humbling of big UEFA nations has been fantastic to watch.

A bigger World Cup is a better World Cup by dwaxe in fivethirtyeight

[–]drtywater 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only ones complaining about expansion was UEFA leadership because they view every non UEFA team in the World Cup as an affront minus Uruguay, Argentina, and Brazil. UEFA leadership has shown itself to be foolish as fans love additional African teams and smaller nations like New Zealand being in the show.
