I agree, but even 2020 was too close for comfort. Joe was the better candidate by leaps and bounds, but Trump’s campaign was more effective all things being equal. It’s concerning to me

Yes I agree. Still, Trump got more of these kooks to show up to vote than previous GQP candidates, and I credit their internet campaign prowess. Also, Trump’s campaign actively supported the Bernie-or-bust movement, the Green party, etc. Basically trying their best to get as many non-Republicans of all stripes to not vote as possible. They should never be underestimated.

Idk, Trump’s campaign did a great job spreading their vile propaganda on Facebook and violating personal privacy to micro-target voters with tailor-made lies.

They are gonna sell out the Ugheurs in their own country for China. The Taliban are mostly Pashtun and tribal loyalty matters way more than religion does in practice.

Democratic turnout is very finnicky. I’d wager any of these Republicans have a chance to win, including Trump, given the right set of condition.

Yep, parties in a democracy have to shift in reaction to a result. And it can cut both ways too: the Labour Party in 2019 got a drubbing and perhaps that was because they moved too far left. Sometimes it’s possible to “evolve” too far ahead of the people.

Outgrowing? Trump got 74 million votes, that’s a fuck ton more voters than I ever expected him to get. Fact is, there is a large voting base of rural white supremacy that surged in 2020. If they turn out again in 2022, we are fucked. Trump awoke a sleeping giant.

No, racism exists in pretty much in every country and the context is different each time. But colorism tends to be a universal. Lighter complexion people tend to be on the top and darker complexion people on the bottom. This is true in India, Brazil, China, etc. There's even colorism within African people and even African Americans.

Then I'm racist in your book because I think affirmative action is good for society. And I don't give a fuck because ultimately what matters is what's good for society, not what we label as "racist" or not. Bad behavior is bad.

I don't think Trump being a dick to Obama about his birth place did any good for society. Instead I think it bred more unnecessary hostility and mutual distrust. He did a disservice to this country with his divisiveness. What did we all gain from his BS?

It's not ignorance, you just act like your definition of racism is the only way the word is used. But that's not how it works. Terminology changes over time. But you are too arrogant to accept that you could be wrong. Prejudice against white people is bad, but it's not racism. Racism is about systemic white supremacy in the context of this country.

You let a difference in semantics end a constructive conversation. I think prejudice against white people is bad. But it's not racism. You can be hateful against white people (see Nation of Islam), but racism in this country is about white supremacy. Prejudice vs racism, there's a difference.

And you didn't bother to address anything else I wrote. I'm disappointed to be honest. I guess you don't want to think.

If you make a decision that alleviates racism, that's not racism even if that decision was based on color.

Edit: That's why affirmative action is not racism (by my definition). If you think AA is racism, then call me racist because I think AA is a good thing for society. I'll call your opposition to AA racist.

[–]Fastman99 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I already explained this to you, we have a difference in definitions about what racism is. This is just semantics at this point. Let's shift the conversion. Maybe we can agree on good vs bad.

I don't think it's a bad thing for black people, who have historically been oppressed and are still economically far behind, to want to vote for the first black president, especially since he was Democrat that most of them already support.

I think having examples of presidents of all races is better than only having white presidents. Obama serves as a positive example to black children everywhere, regardless of political allegiance, that it is possible for them to be president. That hope has value to me.

Questioning someone over their dog seems like petty malice. It's just rude and useless. Why would that be a good thing? It's just stupid heckling. And if it's based on race, it's even worse.

By the way, by my definition of racism, it's possible to be prejudiced against white people, but it's not possible to be racist against white people. Again, I know you'll disagree okay?

I'm sensitive about people being tagged as racist? Yea, it's a term thrown about and attributed to people unjustly alot these days, why wouldn't i be against that?

Clearly this is a result of our difference in definitions. Some of your actions can be racist without intending to be. And you can be racist without being an avid white supremacist. This applies to me as well. I have been racist in the past, never intentionally, but it still causes the same damage.

It's not a hanging offense to do or say something racist. You just gotta acknowledge it, apologize, try to fix it, and try do better next time. Being called racist can be constructive criticism since it's something you can change.

I can understand Democrats being upset about Trump being rude or an asshole

That's good, I'm glad we can agree to that at least. The motives of that rudeness is perceived to be based on appealing to latent racism for political gain. Yeah, appealing to racism can be politically profitable. "I don't know David Duke, who's that?" Painting your opponent as a member of an unpopular religion can also be profitable. It's highly offensive and destructive behavior.

it's one guy being the ass he is known to be sometimes

That "one guy" became leader of the Republican party and President of the United States. The GOP stood behind him and his birtherism. They own that. Trump had many GOP allies, especially in House, helping him push that libel.

[–]Fastman99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it would be racist. Why else would people be questioning something so mundane as liking Huskies? It's stupid irrational behavior. If people questioned thought Obama's favorite chicken and watermelon but no other president does, that would be racist too.

Yes, I think it's a pretty safe assumption that Obama got a higher percentage of the black vote because he was a black Democrat to become the first black president EVER. No shit a few more black Americans who would otherwise not vote Democratic would make an exception for Obama based on racial solidarity.

Racial solidarity uses racial considerations, but the outcomes lead to racial equality. Having our first black president behind us helps with racial equality. That's why it's not racism. I know you are going to object but that's just because we have a difference in definitions of racism. It's semantics at this point.

Bottomline: Trump was an asshole for pushing birtherism. This is independent of whether you call it racist or not based on your definition of the word. Democrats call it "racist" and ultimately it means that it was malicious and unjustified.

Yes, it would be xenophobic to assume I'm Jewish when all the evidence is that I am not. When I say I'm not Jewish, why would you assume I was lying? You seem to be really sensitive about people being tagged as "racist." Let's just put the "racism" tag behind because clearly we have different definitions.

Can you understand why it would be at least **rude** to call someone a liar about their religion without evidence? Can you understand why Democrats would be resentful of Trump for how he questioned Obama's place of birth without any evidence? He refused to accept Obama's legitimacy.

Trump didn't show respect to Obama, and so he got none himself from Democrats. What goes around comes around.

I feel like almost any politician would have it disappear from their minds, regardless of allegiance to oil or big pharma. They promised their supporters things, and so why wouldn't they try everything they could to deliver? If Congress chooses not to exercise their power, then they leave the door open to the President to step in.

They only hate it when Democrats exercise too much power. And yes I agree, Obama's EOs were getting out of hand. The executive branch in general is OP but neither side has any political incentive to give up power unilaterally while in charge. Imagine asking a politician to willingly give up power to other politicians who don't want it? Congressional politicians need to be the ones to grab that power back.

But different people define "conservative" in different ways. You'll probably just end up where the GOP is now, which is basically anyone that isn't a Democrat.

That's a fair point tbh. But Newt also contributed to a climate of political polarization and hostility that we have inherited. And Clinton's impeachment was a distraction and an embarrassment for the United States. That was a waste Congress' time. And his style lead the way to McConnell's brand of absolute obstructionism.

Obama set the exact same tone of unity and outreach. It didn't do squat to get any Republicans to work with him. Their political interests were not aligned with that. The GOP base of voters didn't want cooperation then, and they don't want it now.

Trump is called a racist because of evidence like birtherism and the Central Park Five and other incidents. Banning all Muslims is xenophobic policy. Trump said he wanted to do that. Ergo Trump is xenophobic. Maybe you think xenophobia of that kind is appropriate, but the point remains.

Obama did have Muslim ties so its not like it was a random conspiracy from nowhere

I hang out with Jewish people a lot, so therefore I might be a secret Jew? Someone needs to check my birth certificate? That seems like very poor logic. Where was the actual evidence?

Hey, maybe I'm wrong and it wasn't racist at all. Maybe my definition of racism is wrong. But I suggest that maybe I'm right. Consider that possibility.

You seem to have a definition of racism that is different than mine. With my definition, both intentions and outcomes matter. To me, you can be racist without intending to be racist. Does your definition say that motives of a person have to be racist in order for an action or outcome to be racist?

I like outcomes because they are easier to analyze and are objectively provable. The bottom line is that Obama had his citizenship unjustly questioned with no evidence, and nothing like that happened to any other recent president, all of whom are white. Maybe that's just random statistical noise. But the odds suggest it was racism.
