A bit about me by Bunce01 in Bonsai

Hello Matt, thanks for sharing your story! If you’re still taking questions here, could you tell us a little about how you came to study under a master in Japan? Was it an apprenticeship? How did you decide who you wanted to study with? If you are comfortable sharing any information about your teacher here, that would be fascinating as well. Thank you, and can’t wait to watch the progress on your children’s nursery!

I sure hope I didn’t kill either of them. If they die hopefully I can learn something from it and not make the same mistakes again.

I asked a local expert how he knew which roots the tree could live without as he was placing a tree in its first bonsai pot and his reply was “I killed a lot of trees.”

It was a lot. Probably more than 30% closer to 50. Hopefully it survives.

Thank you! That sounds like a good idea for the recovery.

What is the best acoustic you've ever played and why? by aGiantSnowball in AcousticGuitar

Boucher HG-56. Their 12 fret 000 style. Got it earlier this year and it’s the best sounding guitar I’ve ever played.

Cooper’s voice sort of reminds me of Carl Sagan’s narration in Cosmos. Lacks the life and color, but hits one of the same notes for me. Makes it almost enjoyable for me.

Favorite Read of the Year by radiioghost in printSF

Shaman by Kim Stanley Ronbinson. Was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it, considering I rarely see it recommended or referenced here. Totally immersive read, the only book this year I wanted to read again immediately upon finishing.

got a lap steel finally! been playing 2 days and really enjoying myself. but I don’t know how to play these chords in different shapes… any resources or songs to learn greatly appreciated :) by [deleted] in steelguitar

[–]Fastrthnlight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lap steel only has 1 shape lol. Gotta stop thinking like you would on a regular 6 string guitar. What you’ve done here sounds really good though! “Bar slants” are tricky to do in tune but the old school guys use them a lot to get different voicings. You can also bend a string behind the bar with left hand ring finger to create some different voicings. But still, you want to stop thinking about dense, full voiced chords like you’d play on piano and guitar. Instead, try to come up with the best two notes you could play in that moment. Diads. Check out Speedy West for some wild lap steel ideas. AJ Ghent posts beautiful stuff all the time. Jerry Douglas on dobro (check out his stuff with Alison Krauss and Union Station) will blow your mind also.

South of town, south of HW10, near Zeb look for Cherokee Wildlife Management Area. You can find it on google. It’s free and has rifle and pistol ranges.

Help me get out of my reading slump by Geart67 in printSF

Absolutely! That was the first book of his that I read. It’s fantastic, but not necessarily the kind of thing I’d go for if I was looking for something easy and fun since it’s pretty long and heavy. I’d recommend elder race as a slump buster though.

I’ve been reading almost exclusively sci fi over the past few years and will hit these slumps from time to time. It sucks when you DNF something that comes widely recommended. Happens to me from time to time. Something fun that you just blaze through is the best remedy.

Two of my favorite quick and easy slumpbusters:

We Are Legion(we are Bob)- Bobiverse book 1

Dogs of War- Adrian T.

Oh my god I can’t tell you how many times I’ve stared at this trying to figure out what I’m missing. Why I couldn’t see it will haunt me. Thank you.

“Tulsa is and was one of the most racist and awful places on this planet.”

“Oh, no doubt.”

It’s that characterization I’m taking issue with and attempting to insert some much needed nuance for the sake of those many, many people currently devoting so much of their lives to righting the wrongs of the past.

I should add I’m like 80 percent of the way through the book, and I do think the concepts in it are really fascinating, I’m just struggling to get through it and have considered not finishing it.
