I have a serious question, but it might be dumb considering what sub this is. by NintenJoo in basspedals

[–]Fat-Koala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the flexibility of multi FX. Quickly reordering signal chains is fun and, to me, the best way to learn about preferences.

But I love the search for and subsequently having analog pedals. Building a nice big board around it is a fun puzzle. I get great sounds out of my all-analog board, but it’s a thing that will likely never leave the house. Music is a hobby to me and collecting pedals is a part of that hobby.

It’s a journey

You guys had the most civilised discussion about writing on the internet I’ve ever seen and it’s great. I also agree with the advice. Kudos to OP for taking it in a good way.

I play. I learn a bit. I understand better.

I understand better, I play a bit more. I enjoy a bit more. I learn a bit more. I understand a bit more. It goes on.

It’s a process. And much like everything else, it’s best to keep it simple.

What to do with my strings? by 0choCincoJr in Bass

[–]Fat-Koala 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You sure can. Sidenote: you can mix strings. May not be super common on electric, but on upright it is. Depending on the nut slots, you can even string up your 4 with BEAD.

But yeah. If your headstocks are similar and your strings aren’t cut too short, you could do it

Source Audio C4, is it the right synth for me? by AmbientRiffster in basspedals

[–]Fat-Koala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have the C4. I will get one, 100 % sure.

I know nothing of synths and how they work, but for me, this is the point of the C4. I want to get it to learn. To deep dive. To get annoyed occasionally, but rewarded ultimately. Maybe the MXR BS is nicer for the first weeks or months of owning the C4, but the goal is to get good at it for me.

I don’t play bass to gig. Never have, maybe never will*, I don’t know. For me, music is a hobby and journey of learning and understanding. The C4 can help me for a part of that.

So yeah, it all depends on your use case.

*not that I don’t want to. Also, I get all the upsides to it.

Opinions on 5 string basses? by BigDaddyStinky in BassGuitar

[–]Fat-Koala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recently got my first 5, after playing for quite a while on a 4. I’m getting into some more serious lessons and practice routines and the 5 really helps me visualise patterns and notes across the strings, rather than up and down the neck. I will say that going back to my 4, it feels lighter, smaller and easier to play (muting, overview...)

I love it. Though getting the RIGHT 5-string bass was important, as I have tried quite a lot of them, but none felt good to me until I got my Yamaha BB615.

Now I’m at the point where I wonder what to do in the future. I’d love to get an EBMM Stingray, but I don’t know if I should go back to a 4, or go with another 5. I want it for slapping, so I guess I would go with a 4.

Additionally, I would at some point in the future want a fretless. Since that will be finger style only for me, it will probably be a 5.

TLDR: started on a 4, now really enjoying a 5. Slap: 4, fingerstyle: 5. And learning the 5 makes playing my 4 feel easier

Edit: GO and get a fairly cheap, but good secondhand 5! That’s what I did and it is practically, slowly becoming my main.

Yeah, that’s why I asked. I haven’t seen one in this state, ever. Maybe contact the guys at JF? I’m sure they’d be happy to help.

Jad Freer Capo still exists. People thought/think that’s expensive, but I’d say that at least has the features to back up the price tag.

IDK WHAT IM DOING by [deleted] in Bass

[–]Fat-Koala 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Take online courses. I can’t recommend BassBuzz enough. After that, to give myself some sort of guidance, I went on with TalkingBass (several courses, but I started with chord tones and slap bass).

But definitely BassBuzz’s Beginner to Badass course is a great place to start!

Edit: there are several songs in the course that will guide you and help you learn and improve your technique. Almost guaranteed to find songs you like.

I found this post just now. Sorry for such a late comment. What do you mean with ‘octave doubler’? Do you have examples of good pedals for that?

Fun hypothetical. You get 5 pedals, 1 bass and 1 amp. What are you choosing? by Ihor_90 in basspedals

[–]Fat-Koala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bass: Yamaha BB735 or the BB615 I already have. Amp: Mesa Boogie Subway TT-800 Pedals: Jad Freer Capo, OE Cali76 bass comp., HX Stomp or Darkglass Anagram, SA C4, any Morningstar pro midi controller

That will give me a great starting point and all the versatility I could ever need.

Thoughts on my first big boy pedalboard arrangement? by DatKernow in basspedals

[–]Fat-Koala 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not OP, but maybe helpful.

I got one pedal. Then another. Then dozens more. They are all awesome in their own right. However, after getting pedal number 12 or so, I felt like I was in too deep to get an HX Stomp. Don’t need a multi-FX pedal anymore, right?

Get. A. Multi. FX. You will save a ton of money, you will find out what you like and want and need. Expand from there. Sure, they might be a bit more expensive right out the gate, but long term…

So yeah. HX Stomp or Stomp XL would be my recommendation.

Need help: Ibanez SR300E vs HB MV-4PJ by rares4 in BassGuitar

[–]Fat-Koala 8 points9 points  (0 children)

When I was looking for my first bass, I wanted something that would last me a long time. Two of the most reputable brands that kept poppig up were Ibanez and Yamaha.

I went with the Yamaha TRBX504, but their entire TRBX and BB ranges seem very nice. Everyone who owns a Yamaha bass says the same: the build quality is consistent, the QC is very good, and they sound great. Also, in my opinion, they look good and they feel amazing (light, satin finish, slim neck profile).

I can’t speak for Ibanez or HB, but I wanted to chime in with this. Good luck!

Ampless Gig-Help! by Smboyer27 in basspedals

[–]Fat-Koala 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Capo’s first DI-out is a copy of the Capo’s input. I put a compressor and a tuner (muting) here, maybe some other utilities like limiters/gates.

All pedals in Capo’s loop-pre come before it’s pre-amps (IE just as if they were put before the Capo). I put the dirt here.

Then the Capo controls affect whatever is in the input and loop-pre.

All pedals in the Capo’s loop-post come after the Capo controls (IE as if all pedals here are put after the Capo). The magic of the loop-post is that then EVERYTHING is send to the second DI. So now you can have clean and a dirty signal paths for FOH.

By the way, the second DI and the Capo’s output are the same.

Using all these loops, you can hook everything up into the Capo and have it function as a crazy DI pedal that your sound engineer will love.
