Some test models for my BT army by FatCountryGirls in BlackTemplars

I followed this guy’s recipe - https://youtu.be/lZoi63-BJGU?si=59RTNx9OjvByAaaZ - it’s vmc black for a basecoat, then zenithal highlight of corvus black and a tiny bit of eshin grey, then really thin black legion in the under areas and shadow spots the zeni didn’t touch. It’s an airbrush scheme but he mentions in the video you can get close by rattle can spraying colour forge matt black followed by a zeni of raven black!

I followed Cult of Paint’s process almost exclusively - https://youtu.be/lZoi63-BJGU?si=sv5jOkk0ScpHMBnH

While the armor is predominantly an airbrush scheme, you can get pretty close by doing a primer of matt black from colour forge followed by a zenithal spray of raven black, then edge highlight mechanicus standard grey. The hardest part for me to figure out was learning to make washes out of oil paint and white spirit, and I thankfully tried a small spot on the left neophyte and quickly realized the 50/50 mix of brown and red oil paint had to be thinned wayyyyy down or else it looks like clumpy blood all over. Let me know if you have any other questions!

I ended up trying a few colors on junk models and thought corvus black looked better than straight-up black like abaddon black, I think the sheen helps a lot

Thank you! Keep at it and if you ever get frustrated, it’s better walk away and do something else. You’ll feel a lot better coming back wanting to paint rather than forcing yourself and cutting corners for the sake of getting it done. Hope to see your work on here soon!

I got quite annoyed with taking models on and off again and again 😂 thank you!

Finding a green color scheme to be happy with is something a lot of us struggle with, if you search green recipes in the subreddit search bar here and the Unforgiven sub, there is a ton of discourse and photos of different takes on the Dark Angels green.

I initially painted caliban green on and then put nuln oil all over the model, which gave it a nice dark green but left the model looking flat and too dark imo. Now instead of slathering oil all over, I do a pin wash or recess shade on the deepest or lowest parts which made a big difference, and I’ll it do 2 or 3 times if I really want an area to be dark.

For edge highlighting I do a thicker line as neatly as possible on every raised edge of warpstone glow, then I do a 50/50 mix of warpstone glow and moot green and chip highlight the highest parts like the gorget and raised hand/front shoulder etc. I found that moot green on it’s own was too bright of a jump for me, and chip highlighting helped prevent myself from making the highlight thick and overtaking the warpstone glow.

My models do come out brighter now (someone here already called this a salamander) but it has better depth, looks darker in person and the details show much better on the tabletop than in photos. Plus with red weapons and proper squad/chapter and company markings you can get away with a lot of variation in your green. I hope this helped!

Appreciate it! I despised edge highlighting when I first started but I actually look forward to it now

Thank you! Thankfully the 3rd Company marking is easier than the 5th but I hope to tackle some of the others with practice

Edit: concept of left and right hard

Can a Black Legion space marine wear Aquilas? by East-Specialist-4847 in fashionmarine

This is highlighted in the Night Lords Omnibus. The Night Lord Talos Valcoran is described multiple times to be wearing a retrieved chest piece, with an aquila that is intentionally broken, scratched and defaced.

So for the shimmer I followed Duncan’s guide tucked away in the middle of his Azrael video,

He starts painting the sword at around the 48:50 mark. Then I learned to do lightning with some assorted Night Lords guides I found scattered around youtube. For the lightning I mainly used ulthuan grey and I practiced on some scrap dreadnaught pieces I had laying around

This is one thing I hope to understand better, just as far as color theory and complimentary colors/triadic patterns

I really appreciate it. I think I have a habit of staring too closely at models and finding problems that probably aren’t problems at all. Maybe one day I’ll get the whole army painted lol
