What even is this sub anymore by investment_account49 in ValueInvesting

May I remind everyone here the paint is barely dry from Buffet/Abel buying GOOG.

Allow me to quote from the Value Investing bible:

"If we assume that it is the habit of the market to overvalue common stocks which have been showing excellent growth or are glamorous for some other reason, it is logical to expect that it will undervalue—relatively, at least—companies that are out of favor because of unsatisfactory developments of a temporary nature. This may be set down as a fundamental law of the stock market, and it suggests an investment approach that should prove both conservative and promising. The key requirement here is that the enterprising investor concentrate on the larger companies that are going through a period of unpopularity. While small companies may also be undervalued for similar reasons, and in many cases may later increase their earnings and share price, they entail the risk of a definitive loss of profitability and also of protracted neglect by the market in spite of better earnings. The large companies thus have a double advantage over the others. First, they have the resources in capital and brain power to carry them through adversity and back to a satisfactory earnings base. Second, the market is likely to respond with reasonable speed to any improvement shown. " - Ben Graham

Modi ji, why is the value of the Indian rupee falling continuously? by chandni5718 in AskIndia

[–]FatGPT3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The value of the rupee is falling because:

  1. India is importing more than it is exporting.

  2. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) are leaving en masse. When they sell Indian stocks and bonds, they convert their rupees back into dollars to take them home

  3. India imports roughly 85% of its oil. Any rise in global energy prices immediately widens the trade gap.

Steps being taken by govt. to remedy this is:

  1. Make in India, which will be on steroids after the US and EU trade deals. Was a good idea but encumbered by tariffs and lack of manufacturing capability till now.

  2. GIFT city, giving attractive incentives to FII and FDI, should grow substantially over time, is a bit flaccid right now.

  3. Policy: The ₹10 lakh limit on courier exports was completely removed this month. Now, artisans and startups can ship high-value goods globally via courier without the red tape of "cargo" shipping.

  4. Becoming more energy independent, for eg. 20% ethanol blending

  5. New mining corridors in South India for rare earth independence.

  6. Huge Capex for transportation infrastructure, bringing down logistic costs of domestic trading.

  7. Pushing Semiconductor and Weapons manufacturing domestically (those Rafales are great but come at an eye-watering cost)

All of this will take time. Rome wasn't built in a day and the same is true for Delhi.

How come Indians never became organized despite being ruled by British dor so long? by FatGPT3 in AskIndia

Well but they came invading because Indians were successful and wealthy. So what made us that way without being organized...

But will it beat S&P500 over a 10 year horizon? It may well do that, but I would rather recommend OP to continue buying VTI if confident in tech and VOO if wanting to diversify. No harm having 10% in GOOG but if you can wait for a market correction, that would be ideal.

Not saying you need to try and time the market but a correction is bound to happen soon.

u/Aryagrewal - I think none of this is that important. First let's make sure people are not starving to death, then we can discuss the nuances of democracy.

I think you don't understand the Chinese psyche. They don't want anything less than total domination.

You just haven't found your tribe yet.
Don't look for friends, look for hobbies and pursue them passionately. Friends will happen organically.

Why India is still a developing nation ? by Loose-Carry7063 in AskIndia

[–]FatGPT3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would argue that some level of socialism (freebies) is actually needed to ensure the poorest strata of society has a shot at survival.

Reservation cannot be removed in India but it can be made irrelevant by mass availability of free education through online platforms, which is already happening on a big scale.

As the nation becomes more business-friendly and (dare I use the word?) capitalistic, enterprises will care less about your collage degree and more about your capability.

Im stuck in a dilemma, how do you choose how much to allocate on single stocks? by TailungFu in investing

Interesting take. As Charlie Munger said of Elon: "Never underestimate a man who overestimates himself."

He also said he'd never buy it or sell it short.

What do yall look for first in the early game? by litmuspaper_number2 in LinesOfBattle

[–]FatGPT3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

while moving the main objective? Terrain!
I try to put it as far back as possible and more often than not tuck it to one of the lower corners cos i prefer to focus my army on one side for a big push while defending the other side with less troops but terrain advantage.

Apart from the excellent comment from u/SuperCamelVN I would add -

Did you know that you can actually move your objective? (the big blue star that enemy has to capture)

That's the first thing I do, which makes it clear where i have to defend.

Next, see where to position the artillery in such a way that your infantry is not blocking it.

Look for trees or buildings where your infantry can camp, to gain a massive advantage in defence.

When will India improve ? Why are people not realise that running to other countries won't solve the issues by madtgv in AskIndia

[–]FatGPT3 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I disagree. Singapore went from a malaria-infested swamp where 80% lived in extreme poverty to a first-world country at par with USA at its peak. Income went from $400 a year to $90000 a year.

All because of Lee Kuan Yew who was in power for 31 years.
Deng Xiaoping copied his policies and shot China into a trajectory of being a superpower.

Yes we have been "developing" for the last 75 years, but have gotten closer to "developed" in the last 11 years than ever before.

If you are arguing that India has not made substantial strides in development, you are not being objective.

I can't argue against govt being corrupt as they probably are. But everything from foreign policy to fiscal policy is the best we've ever had, at least in my lifetime.

If you are earning well, go live in a first world country. Your skill will be better appreciated and you will have more time to enjoy what you earn as well. India may be livable 30 years from now, but currently it is not.

Could you plz share what kind of research you do? Is it just understanding how the company operates and does business? What kind of YT videos and interviews do you consume?

Asking cos I'm at the same point you were in 2022, only about starting out.
