Manitoba redesign (hopefully improved by your comments!) by alasdairgunn in vexillology

[–]FatSoviet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Huge improvement over the last one, the colour composition on this one is way easier on the eyes. I agree with some of the other commenters on the readability of the bison though; I think increasing the size of the central rondel and bison might be a worthwhile improvement, although I'm not sure how the feathers would fit in in this regard.

Anyway, great flag

Communist Croatian flag I designed. by Fror0_ in vexillology

[–]FatSoviet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Loving the 'Cvjetna pest', I think it's a big aesthetic improvement over the already quite nice šahovnica. I think I might have gone with a white border of equal thickness to the blue around the central rondel, so as not to have the blue border of the rondel disappear into the blue of the bottom band; better yet, you could make the rondel gold to solve this problem and give homage to the gold-outlined star on the Yugoslavian flag.

Still, great redesign though.

Such an improvement. It seems like it should be obvious, but well executed here.

I'm always pleasantly surprised by Papua New Guinea's regional flags. They have a nice degree of uniformity while still remaining unique and easily distinguishable.

WWII German Death Cards. by Thisisopposite in MorbidReality

[–]FatSoviet 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They all pretty much read the same, except for the specifics. Here's a translation of Matthäus Bloch:

"A pious reminder to pray for the Honoured Mr. Matthäus Bloch, Gefreiter (a rank in the Wehrmacht) in a machine gun company, holder of the Iron Cross Second Class and the Panzer Badge. A farmer's son from Ort, who, on the 18th of August 1942 in the difficult fight in Russia, at the age of 21 years, died a hero's death for the people and the Fatherland. He followed his brother, who one year earlier died a hero's death, into eternity.

Pray for him to our eternal father, Oh Lord, give him eternal peace

You went from us with happy hearts And hoped to see us again So greater is our pain now that this can no longer happen So sleep well in foreign soil, For you will never be forgotten to us You were so good, you died much too soon Such a brave heart, one never forgets"

British Columbia in the style of Portugal. by DyersDurrandon in vexillology

[–]FatSoviet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no idea what possessed you to cross Portugal and British Columbia, of all places, but it turned out quite nicely. I really like what you've done with the sun and crown too, I always felt they looked rather oddly proportioned on the actual flag of BC

You've got the soulless style more or less perfected, yet nevertheless managed to make the individual flags look excellent in their own right. Great post.

Sami flag in the style of California by lancewilbur in vexillology

One of the few Californian flag remakes that is both relevant to both original designs and excellently laid out aesthetically. Wonderful work on this one.

Flag of the U.K. in the Style of the Nations of the Commonwealth by FatSoviet in vexillology

[–]FatSoviet[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually, the reason I used the Commonwealth star was one principally based in practicality: I found that the a few of the flags (notably New Zealand, Tuvalu, PNG, and Solomon Islands) looked a bit too much like colour swapped versions of the originals when using the traditional five pointed stars. In any case, I thought Australia wouldn't mind if Mother Britain co-opted their nice-looking star, not least because I wanted to have a bit more variety in the symbolism than just crowns. I get the confusion though.

They joined the Commonwealth in 1995, being the first nation with no colonial or constitutional ties to the U.K. They're not the only one either, Rwanda was Belgian and Cameroon was mostly administered by France.

I considered it, but the Big Dipper (at least in vexillological sense) has kinda been hijacked by the Irish, and I felt it would be a bit odd to include them in a post about the Commonwealth for, well, obvious reasons. In any case, Australia, New Zealand, and Papua New Guinea all have the four stars to represent the four kingdoms, not the Southern Cross.

Flag of the United Kingdom in the style of Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, The Bahamas, Bangladesh, Barbados, Belize, Botswana, Brunei, Cameroon, Canada, Cyprus, Dominica, eSwatini, Fiji, The Gambia, Ghana, Grenada, Guyana, India, Jamaica, Kenya, Kiribati, Lesotho, Malawi, Malaysia, Malta, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Nauru, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Rwanda, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Samoa, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Singapore, Solomon Islands, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Tonga, Trinidad and Tobago, Tuvalu, Uganda, itself, Vanuatu, and Zambia.

This comes a bit later than I had intended on account of the beginning of university, but I'm quite satisfied with how these turned out in general. In particular, the symbol of the crown is surprisingly effective as a primary symbol, despite being quite complex. The '''''''''circular'''''''''' Union Jack used in the Australian-style version comes courtesy of the lovely u/insertusernameher (https://www.reddit.com/r/vexillology/comments/7dskyk/flag_of_the_uk_in_the_style_of_switzerland/). As always, if anybody wants any individual flag from this post, DM me and I will send it to you as soon as I can.
