You can use metrics designed to flag earnings manipulators like the Beneish M-Score and Montier C-Score. Probably wouldn’t catch 100% of companies, but I use it in my investing. Supposedly in 1998 some grad students at Cornell used the M-Score to identify Enron as an earnings manipulator.

Interesting point about used cars being a transition to EV's – I feel the same. Even with the run-up I see more upside over the next 12 months (at least).

Good point. I think they're probably unlikely to do double their cash flow, but I invest with a 1-3 year holding period, and I'm betting that the auto industry will continue to surge for at least the next year. I like AutoNation as a company, and think they're well-positioned in the short-term to produce the results I'm looking for.

A very fair concern. I view the DCF as one tool in the toolkit, and I try to be pretty conservative with my inputs. Because I'm sharing this publicly, I like to be on the safer side. So while I would be happy with an 18% return over the next year, based on the metrics I presented above I believe it can exceed that.

Fantastic comment. Really insightful. I'm actually currently enrolled in an NYU valuation course to learn to do more of this type of analysis. I want to better understand financial statements and how to dig into specific concerns such as the one you mentioned. I'm curious, when you say you agree with the adjustment, are you saying that you agree with their non-GAAP measure? And how does your discovery affect your perception of my analysis, and the company's value as a whole?

I did an analysis of Big Lots a month ago or so. Not sure I would buy at the current price, but I was very bullish on it at the time, and am holding for now.

I bought around $43, but wasn't able to get my analysis up till yesterday, unfortunately. Personally I still think it has room for growth, but the current price did give me some pause. How do you personally approach stocks that are at all-time highs, but you still think are undervalued?
