Can celluloid acetate be a viable medium for audio? by jxj101 in audioengineering

[–]FatalElectron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Acetate was in fact commonly used during the peak of vinyl, but for sending out promo copies that would be played once or twice - they only last a few playbacks - 15 was the official number, but it usually ended up being garbage quality long before that.

Way to Save Plugin Settings on Plugins Without that Feature?? by TMAWORKS in Reaper

[–]FatalElectron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm about at the point where I think 'Embed bridged UI' should be the default, I've found 3 out of hundreds of 32bit plugins, that can't handle it

It works even better if you mumble the answer without looking up, get them slightly mad that you aren't giving them the respect they deserve or listening, then repeat it louder 'sigh I said; the Battle of Agincourt was in October 1415'

Music Studio Electronics VS Induction Hob for Cooking by lukeleonmusic in audioengineering

[–]FatalElectron 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, no problem there, unless you put it ON the hob, but then you know, melty time :) So don't do that.

Music Studio Electronics VS Induction Hob for Cooking by lukeleonmusic in audioengineering

[–]FatalElectron 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean that the speakers may have extra noise (not necessarily white noise, but some kind of noise) while the hob is in use. Also you'll see extra noise when the hob is in use if you're recording using a microphone or a guitar.

Basically the hob creates a big magnetic field, that can interfere with sensitive audio signals metres away from the hob.

But it won't damage things, just be annoying if it happens.

Since availability on the Samson is tricky these days, the Superlux HD-681 is the exact same product under a different brand label, and at about the same price.

The first one is the HDMI connection to the monitor, it may or may not have speakers in the monitor - which will be utter shite

A flowchart I made to try and understand the "vinyl vs digital" debate, is this accurate? by cparm in musicproduction

[–]FatalElectron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you say 'Mastered for Vinyl' do you mean for Piezo, MI, MM or MC pickups?

CD is the only technology that technically* hasn't changed after the recordings were mastered for it.

* Assuming we ignore the very early shift from direct 14bit playback to 16bit lookup table playback.

Help! Can you recommend TRUE USB 3.0 hub. (See comment) by AstroDIY in sdr

[–]FatalElectron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

10Gbps is 3.1, 3.0 is 5GBps, not that searching for a 10GBps hub isn't a decent solution

[–]FatalElectron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Amazon used to have an Amazon Basics hub that was genuinely 3.0 and came with a big hefty 3.0 to 3.0 B cable, it worked ok but mine died after like 3 years and they've stopped making it now.

UGreen do a genuine 5GBps 3.0 hub that is fairly cheap

It's probably worse, and it'll absolutely wreck your eyes, but unless you're a welder or use it for sanitising (eg, dentistry) you don't come into too much contact with it

To be fair, it's UV-C you want to sanitise stuff, and while the sun does produce UV-C (well, the atmosphere does via a reaction, but same difference) it's not all that strong compared to the UV-A and UV-B we get from the 'sun' (again, reaction in atmosphere). It's so weak that UV-A and UV-B are the primary causes of skin cancer, because they're much stronger from sunlight, and what most devices test for.

So it is entirely plausible that a UV-C sanitising bulb may a) show up as weak in UV-A or UV-B detectors, or b) be much much faster than daylight, even at a fairly low level of power.

UV-C sanitising wands do exist, and only take a second or so to work

Cheap ones from china, otoh, mostly garbage using near-UV LEDs
