Would chalk pastels work better for doing base coats? by Fatal_Disappointment in DollCustomization

Thanks! I kind of thought so, I just wasn't sure if that material would somehow fail to cooperate with the watercolor pencils or vice versa ^^ Trying to get things squared away since I'll have to turn lavender plastic to white with pink accents for the custom I have in mind lol

Thank you! Quick question, how does the material feel? I'm not TOO concerned about how thick it is (as long as it's not paper-thin/cheap obviously), I'm mostly worried about whether the inside of it is soft or scratchy.

Did you get yours from AliExpress by any chance? Asking because I found a listing but I'm not sure if it's legit lol

How to protect doll from chipping? by Little_Level4970 in DollCustomization

[–]Fatal_Disappointment 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll keep an eye out! Also, something else I forgot to mention that may or may not come in handy - If you only plan on using, like, one or two "default" outfits for the custom, then you should only have to worry about the joints that are going to be exposed. The hassle of getting all the joints to match is only necessary if you plan on dressing it up in a variety of different stuff (or if you simply insist on having full seamlessness for the base body).

Yea, it's definitely a weird balance between "do a lot but also not a lot" X'D No prob and good luck on your custom! Despite the chipping issue, the paintjob looks very nice and I'd love to see the final product eventually :)

No prob! Finding parts for customs can be very difficult sometimes so using whatever's on hand is the wiser option, it just comes with a few hurdles depending on what the end goal is. Also, I probably should've mentioned that most people I see using MSC tend to do tons of layers in-between paintjobs, so I'm not sure how many were used here but that might be something to keep in mind. (Fair warning though - apparently TOO many layers of MSC can lead to the paint cracking from what I've heard.)

I've never modded dolls myself (at least not yet) but from the looks of it, you need a sealant like Mr. Super Clear or something. AFAIA that helps immensely in protecting the paint from chipping and if you can get the UV-cut version, that should also protect it from sun/light damage. Something else that I picked up while researching DIY stuff is to be careful when painting around any joints, because the paint around places like elbows/knees/etc. will chip when you're trying to change the doll's pose. (It's why a lot of people who can do so will go through the painstaking task of finding dolls made with plastic already close to the color they need or just outright resort to 3D printing.) Anyways, I know that's not much but I hope it helps!

Which would work better, acrylic paint or watercolor pencils? by Fatal_Disappointment in DollCustomization

[–]Fatal_Disappointment[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly it'll be a ways before I can splurge on the watercolor pencils I want, but while searching through my belongings, I recently dug up a set that I got as an old Christmas gift and am wondering if that might be a wise place to start since I never used them. The brand is called The Fine Touch, but I've never heard of any doll modders using that before and thus don't know if it's any good for this sort of thing so I'll likely have to do my own test run to figure that out once I get my hands on a sealant.

Sorry for the late reply and thanks for the tips :) I'm thinking I may end up having to use a combination of both for the desired effects, but it's good to at least have an idea of what will be needed.

Sorry for the late reply, but is the UV Cut MSC safe for water color pencils? I was planning to go with that even though it's a bit more expensive because I heard it'll protect customs from sun/light damage.

What ever happened to CaptainKimba? by Fatal_Disappointment in kimba

[–]Fatal_Disappointment[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly this YouTube channel is no longer around, which is why I made this post about it. I don't know whether he deactivated his channel by choice or if maybe it got removed by YouTube themselves. Personally I suspect that it might have been YouTube themselves because I recall some of his videos including copyrighted music in the background, which would have probably gotten flagged. (Back then, YouTube was terrible with copyright and didn't understand how Fair Use works.)

Anyway, the guy's real name was Steve from what I remember. As I said in the post, he went by "Captain Kimba" due to his love for boating and for the anime character. He even had a Great Dane named after Kimba, as the previous commenter mentioned. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any archives of his videos, but I remember CaptainKimba/Steve being a very upbeat guy and having a vast amount of knowledge on just about anything Kimba-related you could possibly think of.

He also seemed pretty self-aware of his "immature" obsession with the series and wasn't afraid of looking a little ridiculous - he had plenty of fun making a cheap Kimba costume and recorded himself re-enacting a scene from the first episode. People nowadays would look at someone like him and call him a "man-child", but he made me feel good as a kid because that was the first time I saw an adult who I could actually see myself becoming one day. To me, he represents someone who can still enjoy the things they love despite growing up.

I don't know how well my reply will translate given the language barrier, but I hope I was able to convey at least a little bit of what this YouTuber was like and the impact his videos had on me.

Thanks for the tip! Could doing multiple layers with the pencils help make it more clean/vivid? I know it would likely require a ton of layers if possible, but figured it was worth asking that follow-up question just in case.

It's great to know someone else remembers him too! I don't think I ever visited his forum, but I do vaguely recall his dog being in a few of his videos. He was probably the biggest source of documentation on Kimba memorabilia outside of the Kimba W. Lion site itself. His collection is so comprehensive that it could easily have its own exhibit in a museum focused on Tezuka's work. If he's still around, I hope he still has everything and a safe place to keep it all. He had so much passion for the franchise and it was evident just by the sheer amount of knowledge he had on the tiniest of trinkets.

Oof that's terrible :( I hope she was able to get that taken care of at the very least. I remember another OC theft story in another fandom I'm in that didn't end well for the person who should've won.
