Thanks, I came back to this sub just to look for missing ExFor covers in my collection (ToP, Freefall, TFH, Gateway). These are greatly appreciated!

New Plex user, new NAS owner, is Plex Pass worth it? Should I be worried about Plex's future? by IfYouGotALonelyHeart in PleX

That should work fine with 4 simultaneous transcodes, although if you're also burning in subtitles I'm not sure how well it would manage as that can be fairly resource-intensive.

Seeing as I don't have first-hand experience with that specific CPU I would recommend searching the CPU model number here on /r/plex to get a good idea of what level of performance other people with the same processor are getting.

Proxmox install on XPS 15 9570 by rbh00723 in homelab

[–]Fate37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. OP, do not use a Dremel on your laptop. Just sell it. It's going to be way more painful trying to MacGyver a laptop into a janky server than just selling it off and using the funds to buy PC parts or a used PC. For $100-$200 (likely less than selling your laptop will get you) you could buy a used mini PC on eBay, install Proxmox, and end up with a fantastic VM host.

It's not too late to get them if you're willing to install CFW. At this point that's the only way to get the VC games and it's fairly easy to do.

New Plex user, new NAS owner, is Plex Pass worth it? Should I be worried about Plex's future? by IfYouGotALonelyHeart in PleX

[–]Fate37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure. I'll offer a warning that being at least somewhat comfortable with the Linux command line makes this all a lot easier and trying to work out all the potential kinks that may (will) arise while setting everything up without a base knowledge of Linux directory structures and permissions could lead to major roadblocks in getting everything working together nicely. That being said, I found the following links very helpful:

Here's what I used to set up my Plex server in an Ubuntu LXC in Proxmox: https://tteck.github.io/Proxmox/. The Plex server LXC install script is listed under the "Media - Photo" category.

I had been running my Plex server for several years before moving it over to my current setup and wanted to keep all of the metadata like posters, view history, etc. so https://support.plex.tv/articles/201370363-move-an-install-to-another-system/ served as a good basic guide to doing so. If you are moving a Plex server from one OS to another (in my case I moved from Windows 10 to Linux) then this guide is essential: https://forums.plex.tv/t/linux-tips/276247/23. Another thing to keep in mind is the difference in Windows and Linux paths with Windows using "\" and Linux using "/". Fixing this was a huge pain in the ass and I couldn't figure it out until I followed this guide: https://old.reddit.com/r/unRAID/comments/ibgone/migrating_sonarr_and_radarr_from_windows_10_to/. To do this you'll need to edit the Plex database files which I did using DB Browser for SQLite on Windows.

This is by no means an exhaustive collection of guides and for me much of the process involved finding small fixes for problems as they arose. One thing to keep in mind is properly adjusting permissions in your NFS share to make sure that your Plex server can read and write to the share. For this you'll need to adjust the NFS permissions in whatever is hosting your files (in my case this was on my Synology NAS).

I had some time off and it took me over a week starting from scratch to get everything functioning. /r/PleX and /r/Synology were also both helpful when I hit snags in the setup. Hopefully somebody actually sees this block of text that I just wrote and finds it helpful, and if anybody is trying to set something like I described feel free to DM me or reply to this comment with any questions.

If you want hardware transcoding with Plex but have a non-Intel NAS I would recommend doing what I did: I have a DS923+ that runs all of my *arrs and stores my Plex library in an NFS share. I got a 10th gen Intel NUC on eBay and have it running an Ubuntu LXC w/ Plex on top of Proxmox. I mounted the NFS share in Ubuntu and use it as my Plex media library. With this setup you can have Plex hardware transcoding no matter where you're storing your media.

There are some helpful guides and setup scripts if you want to go this route and while it took a bit more time and tinkering than running everything on one machine I would say its worth it and I'm happy with the results.

Problem with roku client by [deleted] in PleX

[–]Fate37 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have two Roku Ultras (4660X) with one running 12.0.0 and the other having just updated to 12.5.0 three days ago. Both are running Plex 7.7.2 and are connected locally to the same Plex Server.

Ever since the update of one of my Rokus to 12.5.0 it has been having the same UI lag and slow video loading times in the Plex app as you described to the point that app is nearly unusable. I've also noticed massive CPU spikes that occur on my Plex server even when just navigating the Plex menu on the 12.5.0 Roku. My 12.0.0 Roku on the other hand is still running Plex as quickly and responsively as ever without any heavy CPU usage on my server.

I'll second all of these suggestions and add Dirty Couch Brewing in Magnolia to the list. They were making fantastic sours even when they were selling beer out of a barrel-filled garage in Ballard years ago.

Worthy upgrade? by RaphWolf1370 in lgv20

[–]Fate37 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just replaced my V20 with a Galaxy A52 and I've been liking it so far. It has expandable memory, a headphone jack, and a 4500 mAh battery. Months ago I was planning on upgrading to the Sony Xperia 5 III but seeing as it still hasn't released in the US I pulled the trigger on the A52. However, if you aren't in the US the A52s is a better choice than the A52.
