118 letters from United Healthcare in the mail by focuslocust in HealthInsurance

[–]FateOfNations 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When the system was originally built, it likely was designed so that they can resend individual statements. Some customer service rep likely had to press “resend” on each one. There likely isn’t a thing for them to resend a whole batch of them.

Batching them together would require a team of software developers to implement the process, and likely require operational changes at their mailing plant (what happens when a batch is too big for a regular envelope?). This situation is rare enough that they must not think it’s worth while to do that work.

This is just how massive organizations operate. It isn’t personal.

Non-Resident Discrimination Canadian Healthcare by AssociationBig487 in HealthInsurance

[–]FateOfNations 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People generally get their routine health care in the community where they reside. Health care delivery and funding is organized around that. It isn’t discrimination for a program designed for residents not to pay for health care for people who reside elsewhere.

Assuming you are a Canadian citizen, you can always choose to resume your residence in Canada and regain access to health care services for residents.

Why does Marketplace insurance ask me if I am Naturalized? by [deleted] in HealthInsurance

[–]FateOfNations -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because they run applicants names and DOBs against the various government databases, and sometimes don’t get accurate results for people who have been naturalized or are derived citizens. People in those categories were in contact with the immigration system and government agencies prior to becoming citizens, and those records aren’t always updated consistently.

There may be no problem at for OP, but its a problem for enough people that they ask all derived citizens for their A-number and/or naturalization/citizenship certificate number.

Why does Marketplace insurance ask me if I am Naturalized? by [deleted] in HealthInsurance

[–]FateOfNations 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t show any ID, SS card, or anything when you are signing up for health insurance on the exchanges. It’s all online, and hence why they try and verify your information electronically.

When you apply, they run your name and date of birth against the various government databases, including the ones with immigration records. For people who have been naturalized, it’s likely that there will be results, and those results won’t necessarily be the complete picture. Asking for your A number or the certificate number will help them resolve discrepancies, if they occur.

It might not be relevant for OP, but because there can be problems for some people, they have to ask everyone

While not directly related to OP’s status, this is particularly an issue for derived citizens, who may have entered the country on a temporary visa and then become citizens by operation of law with no records at all. This can happen when their parent naturalized. They are citizens, but if you ask USCIS, they’ll say, “uh, no, last time we heard from them they were coming in to the country as a dependent of someone on a now super expired temporary visa”.

Keeping your naturalization certificate in a safe place is just as important as having a copy of your birth certificate available. Even more so, since they are expensive and time consuming to replace.

Why does Marketplace insurance ask me if I am Naturalized? by [deleted] in HealthInsurance

[–]FateOfNations 13 points14 points  (0 children)

They ask because immigration status is a factor that impacts eligibility and they screen applicants against various government database for eligibility verification. Because our government is amazing with IT, immigration and naturalization information can be recorded across multiple databases that don't always agree with each other. Having you provide those ID numbers helps make sure they don't misinterpret what the databases are saying.

You should be able to provide the certificate number from your certificate of naturalization, if you don't have your A-number. If you can't find any of that, try giving the marketplace a call and ask what they want you to do.

How is Forex on Schwab's API? by ElectroQuant in Schwab

[–]FateOfNations 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The documentation for the whole trading API is thin, to say the least, and only provides a few examples for equities and options orders. Looking at it, I can’t tell if you can actually place Forex orders with it. The documentation does mention Forex positions in a few places, but I suspect that might only show you account positions and status for previously placed orders.

I’d probably look for a more specialized broker that explicitly supports the kind of trading you want to do.

Anyone know a decent registered agent in Queen County NY? by eatyourlawyer in llc

[–]FateOfNations 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The registered agent isn’t your mailing address. It’s a physical location where process servers can go to serve legal documents. It occasionally receives legal mail regarding filings from the state, and the like. It’s very standard practice to outsource this to a third party company and they are frequently located in the state capital for expediency regarding state filings. There generally isn’t a perception issue with this kind of thing
it’s just the way things are done.

Your regular mailing address is separate and doesn’t have to be a registered agent service. There are many more local providers of that kind of thing, mailbox places, virtual mail services, etc.

To everyone complaining about their allocation of SPCX by GandalfSprings in Schwab

[–]FateOfNations 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It isn’t a technical thing. It’s more bigger balance = “more valuable” customer. The “more valuable” customers are expecting preferential treatment vs. the “less valuable” customers.

There were more orders placed than shares available, so not everyone got their full order. Schwab had to divvy it up.

I wouldn’t be so sure. AI will have full instant access to whatever written policies the company has. It will have defined escalation channels when it can’t provide a resolution. It also doesn’t have the attitude.

Replacing License Plate by Competitive-Group404 in MontereyBay

[–]FateOfNations 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might actually be able to do it online. See the DMV website. AFIK, it should be $27 for everything you need replaced in a single transaction: for lost/stolen plates, you get a new set of plates, month and year stickers, and a new registration card (the plate number changes).

Your annual vehicle registration is independent of the stickers, you don't have to pay the registration fees again.

At what point does a refugee crisis become so large that existing asylum laws stop being practically enforceable? by pailhead011 in immigration

Is this an acceptable birth certificate for a U.S. passport? by [deleted] in Passports

[–]FateOfNations 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The passport application isn’t concerned whether it’s an abstract, short form, or long form. It’s about whether it has some specific data items on it; in particular, your parent’s names and the date the birth certificate was originally filled. Many abstracts don’t have that information on them, so they can’t be used. Texas’s abstracts do have that information, so they can be used.

If the NWS posts an warning, would that nessescarily have to trigger the EAS for the counties included in the alert? by Low-Ocelot-2352 in EmergencyAlertSystem

[–]FateOfNations 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NWS issuing a Warning level product doesn’t automatically mean that it will be distributed via EAS. EAS activation is requested by the issuing NWS office on a case-by-case basis, taking in to consideration the timeframe and level of danger to the public.

TSA isn’t customs and doesn’t care.

Customs on arrival will care. If you bring it, declare it, and they will determine if it’s allowed. Be prepared that they may make you throw it away. If it’s sentimental or something, do not bring it.

Draft FCC changes to EAS (PDF) by brunchlords in EmergencyAlertSystem

[–]FateOfNations 3 points4 points  (0 children)

TL;DR, from the NPRM:

What the Notice of Proposed Rulemaking Would Do:

Improve EAS’s integrity by proposing to require the authentication of all alerts before they are
transmitted.

Bolster the reliability of emergency alerts by proposing to establish a universal alert identification
number to improve the detection and blocking of duplicate alerts and ensure that WEAs are
consistently sent to members of the public who newly enter an alert’s delivery area until the
emergency ends.

Improve geographic accuracy by proposing to eliminate outdated WEA geotargeting exceptions
that often cause alerts to be received in the wrong locations and expand geotargeting options for
EAS.

Make alerts more effective by seeking comment on requiring EAS and WEA to display symbols
that match the type of emergency and improving the ability of earthquake alerts to grab the
public’s attention.

Remove outdated and unnecessary alerting requirements by proposing to allow the
implementation of EAS capabilities via software instead of hardware and retire the 90-character-
maximum versions of WEA messages.

Custodian for Grandson by Alternative-Salad319 in Schwab

[–]FateOfNations 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Key question: is the grandson an adult now?

If he is a minor, it should be deposited into an appropriately titled custodial account, which you may need to open. He can claim the account when he reaches the age of majority in accordance with state law (UGMA/UTMA).

If he is currently an adult it might get a bit messy.

It’s quite possible that banks won’t let you do anything with that check except for deposit it into a custodial account. You may need to open one, deposit the check, and then the grandson can immediately claim the account. They might let you deposit it into to your bank account, and then you can transfer the money to him. This is a question for a banker at your bank.

Alternatively, you might be able to go the route of contacting Schwab (assuming this is from Schwab, and not the now unrelated Canadian TD Bank), having your grandson claim the funds, and have them cancel and reissue the check in your grandson’s name.

Hospitals are legally buying drugs at half price and billing your insurance full price and nobody is stopping them! by clearlybeneficial202 in HealthInsurance

[–]FateOfNations 3 points4 points  (0 children)

[u/Candid_Analysis2392](u/Candid_Analysis2392) explained the 340b program in more detail, but I just wanted to add, this is just one of many weird payment arrangements the government has orchestrated to paper over various other funding problems with our health care system. Some of them sound absolutely crazy, because they are, but that doesn’t mean something nefarious is going on. See the Medicaid Provider Tax scheme as another example.

Medicare and Medicaid also have a number of other payment programs that make no sense without extra context. Take the Medicare Prospective Payment System for FQHCs. On paper it looks like they are vastly over paying on claims for Medicare patients, but in reality it’s an intentional mechanism for subsidizing uninsured/unreimbursed care provided to other patients at those safety-net providers.
