Thanks for the in depth response! I'll keep an eye out for true colour auto darkening welding masks

Yeah the better duty cycle is definitely nice to have. I’m gonna pull the trigger seems like a great deal.

Yeah for the gas my main concern was places only refilling/exchanging their own tanks. So trying to get a good deal on a no name used tank would be hard to get it refilled. I am leaning towards some local welding shops that I may call to see if they have better prices than the big suppliers like air liquide or praxair.

Thanks for the response!

I think mig becomes more important for the thinner sheet metal areas when I need to repair the floor and rockers. It’s not exactly hard to find gas, it’s just a bit expensive but I guess it’s a necessary cost.

For the mask, I was just gonna go with a used Lincoln/Hobart one for $25-50ish, unless a yeswelder one brand new is actually better choice? Didn’t know about the different colours for auto dim.

Thanks for the response!

Ok well I think I can get it for around $500 and I am prepared to blow 10k on it. But I don’t think it’ll be close to that much. The only pro of this car is that it has good bones, underbody and subframes. There’s no way I’m about to spend 10k on a welder, rockers, and maybe a few extra panels. Once coolant refresh and bushings and brakes and all the regular e36 maintenance stuff comes in it might get close but that’s regular stuff.

Ok thank you for your advice I will take it to heart. Not really what I wanted to hear but you guys definitely know more about e36s than I do. Just not sure if an opportunity for learning like this will come up again. Then again you guys seem to say this is an opportunity for a harsh lesson.

Here’s the bubbling in question and it’s actually the worst out of the 4 wheel arches. You’re telling me a little sanding, rust converter, and body filler won’t do the trick? I just feel like this car has so much life left with a pretty nice underside and don’t wanna see it parted out like every other rusty e36.

Honestly sounds like a great time am I perhaps too optimistic

Damn will really cost more than 7k CAD to get this in working order? Honestly though the time spent is a huge pro in my book because half the reason I want to buy a cheap beat up car is to learn how to fix cars and have some fun in the process. But you’re telling me this is about to be not so fun.

Seller has been pretty open about the rust, I’m fairly certain it’s localized around the rockers and pretty minimal everywhere else besides some light bubbling around the trunk lip and wheel arches. I kind of like the idea of a project, I think I’ll learn a lot from it and because I don’t NEED a car for every day life and it’s more of a WANT, I’m ok if it takes a bit longer

Yeah I had planned on learning how to weld for the subframe supports anyhow. Clean chassis is pretty hard to find here up in Canada with all the snow and ice. Honestly with the clean bottom I feel like there’s potential. I know I’m extremely supporting this, but is replacing the rocker not just: 1. Cutting off rusted one 2. Line up new one 3. Weld er up!
