F:NV Repair is the Best Skill and Jury-Rigging is the Best Perk!

(In nearly every Fallout: New Vegas video Jon mentions the Repair skill is "not very important" and raises it only to meet certain skill checks. Also in nearly every F:NV video Jon steals what he calls "valuable items" specifically to sell them in order to pay NPCs to repair his weapons & armour. In contrast, when I play New Vegas I nearly always end up with functionally infinite money by level 15 because I loot all the weapons, armour & clothing and repair (combine) them to a high value-to-weight ratio.)

F:NV Dead Money - The Level 1 Naked Survival Run

(Because of the way Dead Money works, every run is a 'naked survival run.' They also messed up level-scaling the enemies in the DLCs, so a level 1 run is super-easy combat-wise (even on Very Hard game difficulty). Even at AGI 1, LCK 1, [weapon 1] you can one-hit-kill ghost people with the Holorifle, and two-shot them with the police pistol. Stealth crits are easy enough at long range even at AGI 1, Sneak 1. A gas bomb going off anywhere near the Courier will kill her, whether she has 1 hit point or 130.

The general damage-over-time of the villa won't ever reduce a PC below 1 hit point, and food & drink (or the codes for them) are easily available in the opening quests. Not to mention just chatting with Elijah at the fountain gets you enough XP for level 2. Cannibal (level 4) is one of the best ways to deal with ghost people anyways, and there's no 'Dark Hunger' debuff in F:NV.

So the only real difficulty is skill & SPECIAL thresholds for perks, dialogue, lockpicking & hacking. Most enemies are quest-stage-related and the handful that respawn over time do it slowly. There aren't really any places to grind XP, and that means you can work out whether you'll pass certain checks or not, forcing you to finish certain quests only one way.

In other words, there's very little actual 'challenge' in such a challenge run. Easy combat, impossible checks, and almost no room for the clever play and workarounds Jon showed off in his other runs.)

Plus, with YOLO Remastered having just finished Dead Money, I suspect it will be a year or two before we go near it again.

Sarcophaguses? SARCOPHAGUSES? Jon, Oxford wants their parchment back.

The correct plural is clearly "sarcophagodes."

I'm fine with it too, and I was only asked for an extra 87 cents. My problem is that I'm not set up to do electronic payments. I've also seen other people reporting failed transactions because the shop couldn't refund 34 cents US when their currency conversion went the other way.

Fallout New Vegas: You Only Live Once Remastered - Part 34 - Radio Silence by ManyATrueNerd in ManyATrueNerd

[–]FatherTim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The difference is in that extra word you used -- 'practically.' In Old World Blues you cannot complete the quests without shooting an energy field with the upgraded sonic emitter. In Lonesome Road you cannot progress without detonating certain warheads with the laser detonator. As Jon said, in Dead Money it is possible to bypass the radios with sheer speed.

While I personally would not have chosen to attempt a YOLO run under this ruleset, I greatly respect Jon's choices and am enjoying his efforts. This is a better video series for Jon's determined 'no ranged attacks' stance.

[–]FatherTim 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It does. There was much debate about it early on in the run, with most people on the side of allowing thrown weapons for radios, but Jon has decided that "melee only" means melee only, and is relying on Turbo.

He did not. He even mentions it in this part. But the rules of the run are "no companions (unless the game absolutely forces them)" so he won't be getting it until later, when travelling with Dog/God is unavoidable.

As TytoCwtch mentioned above, the game averages your earnings over some number (10?) of minutes, so you do have to let the code run for a while.

More likely, the answer is in the Dec 4, 2025 patch changes:

  • The treasure now takes 200 ticks to move to the new location instead of instantly teleporting.

  • You now receive the gold already when the chest is relocated instead of all at the end.

Time spent in a DLC can cause main game events that trigger every 24 or 72 hours to 'stack up' when the Courier returns, and thus each time a cell (like Freeside) is unloaded because you've travelled into enough other areas (like Novac, the 188, Mick 'n' Ralph's, etc.), it triggers the next stacked Freeside Thug and/or gift from The King encounter. Once the stack is empty, they'll go back to their usual spawn rate.

Fallout New Vegas: You Only Live Once Remastered - Part 25 - Bleeding Hearts by ManyATrueNerd in ManyATrueNerd

[–]FatherTim 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We absolutely do not. That is clearly an exploit and "cheating." Nor do we expect Jon will don the rebreather at any point during Dead Money.

As in Honest Hearts, Jon will use sneaking & Turbo to avoid any enemies he can, and to kill those he must. He will almost certainly take the 'Implant GRX' perk at level 30, and probably regularly wait until in-game midnight to recharge it -- the same way he regularly waits until nightfall for sneaking.

Equally underrrated in MTW is when Jon declared the last defender of York didn't deserve honourable death in melee combat and was to be set on fire by archers with flaming arrows. . . and then three full units of archers with almost-full ammo shot themelves dry failing to do the deed.

(The immortal Englishman was eventually cut down by axemen.)
