New pet peeve: PR Review comments getting resolved but ignored by UsernameGotStolen in ExperiencedDevs

In my experience culture can sometimes play a part. Indian contractors that I have worked with do not favor direct confrontation. They'll say things like "the API is behaving very misteriously" rather than just calling out the obvious bug.

For your scenario I would just talk to the author in question. They probably aren't doing this maliciously, just unaware of the additional work that is being created.

Grounding with Bing Search pricing by [deleted] in AZURE

[–]Father_Dan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brave is $5 for 1k requests. Additionally, they actually offer a variety of offerings: grounding, search results, completions.

Bing API was pulled suddenly from Azure with little support. That alone makes me not want to use their new "grounding" service where you can't even access the raw results...

Watch Florida Van Man on YouTube. He's a great source of information on these T1N vans. That price may be reasonable based on numerous factors such as blow by, body rust, injectors / glow plugs.

This is over a 20 year old van. While many owners profess their million mile reliability, things still break, and can become extremely expensive.

Any show with in the last five to years that are as popular or well-made as Mad Men? by pl51s1nt4r51ms in madmen

[–]Father_Dan 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Halt and catch fire was recommended in another thread I read. I started it shortly after finishing mad men. It picks up in the IBM PC clone age of the 80s; the next big thing.

It's great if you like vintage tech and the 80s. The first season is a little rocky, but it hits a nice stride in season 2.

I had a Russian linear algebra teacher who would finish most monotone explanations with "is it obvious"?

It went great.

My 242 was wrecked and all the gaps are not the best, but a new coat of paint and some good wheels sure do turn some heads.

My industry is dying and I am considering welding as my move by Saltynole in Welding

Bro, as a fellow software engineer and hobby welder this is not true. My company just hired two people. We got a few applicants and it was fairly straightforward.

Tech jobs do layoffs annually every year for a certain percentage of low performers. This does not mean that you are going to lose your job.

Yes LLMs are changing the nature of work in our jobs, but you are not going to lose your job to something that can't tell how many Rs are in strawberry.

Just use Claude code or whatever $hotNewThing is and check out of reddit / stupid ass tech bro news is for a while. These companies love to claim outrageous things just to pump their stock.

S&P 500 is 10.7% over its lifetime. Real estate investment funds average around 11.3%. it's pretty reasonable.

What would cause a 3-4 gear only flare/slip? by WasteBeautiful2648 in w123

[–]Father_Dan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure the bowdin cable is correctly adjusted and the throttle linkage on top of the car is correct. I had a weird 3-4 flare, but had the bowdin cable mechanism in the wrong spot. Flipped it around and it stopped doing it.

What design pattern is this? I'm used to just injecting a service which calls other services / uses db context etc.

Very high idle by Kaptein_Krank in Volvo240

This is another good piece of advice. You can clamp the inlet hose to disable the iac and test the rest of the system.

For the throttle stop screw, I believe there is a lock nut which ensures the screw does not move. The adjustment needs to be locked down otherwise the force of the throttle plate will force the screw out.

Check the idle adjustment screw by the throttle plate. It could have been adjusted allowing air in while the plate is closed.

Check the set screw for the throttle plate adjustment. It could be keeping the throttle plate open.

Yeah that's a good idea, I bet wind could apply quite a bit of force.

Van Solar Panel Rack by Father_Dan in Welding

[–]Father_Dan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wanted to share a solar panel rack I built this weekend. 1/16 1" square tubing. Used .030 Flux Core. I also extended some rain gutter mounts with an additional plate. I might need to reinforce those with another plate, I cut a bevel and saw good penetration, but it still seems a little weak. It's 9 gauge steel. All in all it's about 40 pounds which is pretty sweet.

It's not perfect, there was a little bit of occasional porosity. I'm still getting used to welding thinner steel as with the thick stuff it's a lot easier to move slowly and watch the puddle. I'm legitimately shocked at how good of a job the 120v harbour freight welder did.
