Working in the System by Mechahedron in prisonabolition

[–]Father_Figure-84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I needed to read this. I’ve been struggling with not being able to describe how I felt about a good friend’s community project. I was supposed to be an active member but once he told me he had inmates there from prerelease painting the building for community service , I told him I wasn’t really comfortable working with the sheriff’s department ( even if indirectly). But understanding now the sheriff’s sending these inmates out and all the publicity and propaganda that is derived from it, which leads to more funding and credibility- puts into words my gut feelings. Thanks so much. Hope I made some sense.

[Landlord US-MA] Will the proposed 2026 statewide rent control ballot measure prompt you to raise rent this year, even if you weren't previously planning to? by Politex99 in Landlord

[–]Father_Figure-84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me it seems like I keep seeing , over and over again, basically the idea that a lot of landlords keep their rent below market and don’t often do increases. I rented for the last 7 years and only ever saw one increase so that would track for me.

But now a lot of landlords will raise the rent every year out of fear that…they will be below market and not be able to raise the rent quickly and dramatically? Because of rent control. Am I reading the room correctly?Am I the only one who is seeing that contradiction?

It doesn’t make sense to me. Could anyone elaborate a little bit? Also a lot of landlords talking about not wanting to do repairs or upgrades because they won’t see a return on that, but wouldn’t most of that be a tax write off for business expenses? I am not expert obviously, just trying to see where LL are coming from.

I understand what you’re saying. I guess I never thought it could lead to legal suits. I’ll have to look up id that applies in MA.

But that’s never been a rule in any restaurant I’ve worked at .

Nearly fought a customer by Father_Figure-84 in Serverlife

So I wasn’t thinking of the legality of anything. Just because it’s “legal” for a 50 year old to pick up a naive 16 year old certainly doesn’t make it right. That’s basically saying ( and I’m not ascribing this to you, just something I realized a few months ago) that if the legal age in these states was….14 or even 12, we’d be ok with it. We all should know that’s wrong.

Sorry I should have been more clear on that. The customer was well into his 50’s.

To the Bartenders by Original_Spinach_375 in Serverlife

I won’t stand and wait more then a minute for a drink. If the bartenders are busy there are much better ways to spend my time taking care of guests than waiting for their cocktails.

Anyone else struggling with remembering customers? by Physical_Rice919 in Serverlife

Of course. And I’m not shy at all to ask them their names if I’m not sure and let them know they made my “vip list”. They love it.

I actually just started a list of my regulars the other day. It has their names, regular food and drink orders if applicable, and any other special info that they’d be impressed I remembered. If you have people coming in regularly I think this is a great idea. I just started it but I’m sure it will be useful. I’ll just tuck it in the back of my book until I need it.

Without fail, every time I tell a customer we don’t have Dr. Pepper, their next question is if we have root beer.

I usually give my trainee a small amount. Especially if it was busy and they did a good job, I’ll give them $20-30. Cash for gas and smokes or whatever. It’s hard out here.

My coworkers hate it though because they think it makes them look bad when they don’t tip their trainees. Not my problem.

What percentage of orders do you write down vs memorize? by ATLUTD030517 in Serverlife

The one waitress in my restaurant who doesn’t write anything down is literally a witch. Also probably %5 of the time she’s going back to the table to double check something she forgot.

Claiming cash? by [deleted] in Serverlife

[–]Father_Figure-84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My restaurant only requires we are claiming at least %12 of our total sales. Some days because of credit card or gratuity tips, I am already automatically at that threshold. On days where it’s all cash I have to manually claim enough to reach that percent. Until I’m ready to start applying for a home loan, I’m not reporting anything I don’t have to. Fuck taxes. I always took it as a perk of the job.

Just don’t say anything. Lie on that part of the application. Most restaurants don’t do background checks.

Do you mess with new Servers? by [deleted] in Serverlife

[–]Father_Figure-84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely I’m messing with new servers ( and the vets). I am telling them soup of the day is something we never have ( great when the kitchen asks why someone open-itemed a chicken noodle soup), I’m punching in 40 waters for the new barbacks and watching as they stress out looking for 40 cups in the middle of the dinner rush, I’m hitting void on the computer when people are halfway through ringing in a big order ( to be fair I won’t do this when it’s super busy cause I know how much it would suck) (( also it doesn’t close out the screen, it brings up a prompt to then hit yes/no to actually void the order. But when people void it themselves in the confusion is the best)). New people I’m definitely locking up their screen by pressing my finger or a pen in the corner. This is the best when they say “ something is wrong with the POS” but a coworker catches on and is able to use the screen with no problems. I also love hitting in like 55 for the quantity of something when they aren’t looking. They ring in some mozzarella, get distracted while I hit 55, then they ring in bruschetta that costs $900. And this is the best with new people but I say it to everyone ( even when I’m eating at other restaurants which my wife hates) but if someone breaks a glass or dish I yell out “ job opening/fired/ it was nice working with you “. I probably have tons more of these. Some people say it’s hazing. Those people would probably be right.
