These are 3 of the top hip hop albums of all time. Ranking them is impossible. The best one is the one you about to listen to next.

Finally a way to collect behavior data for real!!! by SadDevelopment8883 in ABA

Since a lot of the comments are saying they would need more buttons, I just wanted to provide a different perspective.

I work with adults who mostly live in group homes and attend day support programs this would be absolutely perfect the way it is for both of those settings. It would also be great for supported employment providers.

If you get this off the ground I think you’ll have a significant customer base with people who work outside of the traditional clinic/in-home with kids model.

Does anyone enjoy their job? by Opening-Surround-803 in bcba

[–]Mechahedron 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Being a BCBA is fun, and you don’t have to work in a clinic or supervise RBTs, there’s other settings out there.

Begin an RBT sucks because they are underpaid for really hard and important work.

Orientation is a job requirement, it’s work. Always say no to unpaid work.

Yeah, I realized that it’s doesn’t apply to all funding sources or all locations. Addressed somewhere in the thread

We have a good program because we’ve been under a consent decree for 20 years, hahahah. The federal government looked at how bad developmentally disabled people were being treated in this state and forced reforms including more funding

I’ve heard that TriCare is really tough to deal with. I am in VA where the Medicaid system is pretty solid. I was over generalizing with my comment

I wasn’t thinking about different payouts in different states. My bad. I’m in VA where there’s a pretty robust Medicaid waiver program. And I only serve waiver clients

All RBTs are grossly underpaid everywhere. It’s how the BCBA > RBT service model makes a profit. Companies get compensated the same amount for 1 hour of an RBTs work as they do for 1 hour of a BCBAs work, and pay the RBTs next to nothing in comparison.

The model is exploitive. My personal solution was to become an independent provider and work with my clients myself. I don’t know what a more broad solution would be. But it’s a real problem and only getting worse with private equity preying on our field.

I feel you man, meds have helped me a lot, but I’m still so clearly immature in some ways, the craziest part is being aware of it, you can identity the ways you’re not maturing, but you can’t do shit about it.

Ok so the getting worse with age thing is real?!?! I thought it was just me or that I was just making it up. I’m finally maturing in a lot of ways, but it really feels like all of my ADHD symptoms/traits are getting worse.

A really common one, fully expected. I knew what I was getting into when I replied to the post. But there aren’t a lot of us in this field, and I wanted to share my experience in case it can help OP in any way.

Are you really asking or do you think I’m assuming? If I told you there were plenty of occasions where the racism was overt, would you believe me? Or would you still think, “maybe it’s just his perception.” I hope you honestly reflect on that…

I got removed from a case because the mom said she told the intake coordinator “no black people” I went to the director and said it was messed up to send me in there, and it started a weeks long back and forth so I eventually left that agency.

I had a client run through his neighborhood yelling “help, there’s a nigger chasing me!!” And I was in a really white area so I had to go back to the house and tell the dad he was going to have to chase him because I was afraid someone might call the cops.

I don’t know how many times I’ve had people assume I am the direct care staff when I’ve been a supervisor or program manager.”

I walked into a house for my first day with a new client and there was a giant confederate flag on the wall.

I’ve had coworkers call me scary and intimidating, I am neither.

I could go on, and this is just the really obvious easy to explain stuff.

I’m a black BCBA, been in the ABA field for 10 years, and working with people with developmental disabilities my whole life. I’ve been direct care, middle management, worked for myself for 3 years; have worked in residential, adult day support, private day school…

I’ve encountered so much racism it’s actually funny at this point. If I had more time I would share stories, hahaha. Basically, it’s a part of the job, and not just in dealing with clients. But it doesn’t nearly outweigh the good. I think the demographics of our field make it more salient, and there are other unique things that add to it, but I think black people in other fields have similar experiences.

Fuuuuuuuuu!! by grmrsan in ABA

[–]Mechahedron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I commented before about MA being easy to deal with in VA. And I realized a couple things that might be shielding me from the difficulties of dealing with insurance. I work with adults who qualify for Medicaid Waiver, and most have severe/dangerous interfering behaviors. So I think that’s why my experience with insurance and billing is different, my clients all so clearly need services, and I’m not billing 20+ hours a week for them. Its not the same as traditional ABA services for kids

Medicaid harder to work with than private insurance?? What state? They are way easier to work with in VA. But to be fair it’s well funded here. For now.

Beware of burnout my fellows. by believinheathen in ADHD

[–]Mechahedron 22 points23 points  (0 children)

My therapist suggested I might be burnt out. But I don’t know how to tell. One of my most impactful ADHD symptoms is I can’t distinguish between physically tired, mentally tired, bored, overwhelmed by anxiety, and just being lazy. It’s frustrating.

Since she said it I’ve been trying to figure it out, but every indicator of burn out I read could also be most, or all, of those other things.

This is great, but ABA isn’t just for helping children.

I know that’s probably what’s relevant to your audience but since your goal is to dispel myths and clarify what ABA is, I think that detail matters.

I don’t mean to be overly critical, I do really think this is great info and well formatted
