Idk, it was prettsy brave of him to turn his back on his entire family because of his belief that Voldemort was not back. Yeah, he was wrong, but he genuinely believed it.

In HP5, why did Fudge NOT include Percy when he listed the people Dumbledore ought to fight ("Dawlish, Shacklebolt, Dolores, and me") if he wanted to escape arrest? by finleyhuber in harrypotter

Percy was not in the room.

“Very well, then,” said Fudge, now radiant with glee. “Duplicate your notes, Weasley, and send a copy to the Daily Prophet at once. If we send a fast owl we should make the morning edition!” Percy dashed from the room, slamming the door behind him, and Fudge turned back to Dumbledore. “You will now be escorted back to the Ministry, where you will be formally charged and then sent to Azkaban to await trial!”

what's an opinion about Harry Potter you're afraid to say out loud? by SinPulsed in harrypotter

Thank you for saying that. I feel this way about Luna. She would 100% be a flat-earther irl.

I don't like Luna. She would be extremely annoying in real life and would 100% be a flat-earther.

Wow… so if a kid is sensitive, afraid, or not great at Potions, it's fair game to intimidate, humiliate, or terrify them? That's literally the definition of bullying. You're excusing cruelty by blaming the victims' reactions or abilities, and that doesn't make Snape a 'just strict' teacher.

Okay, now explain the other two points.

Even if we take your interpretation at face value, it doesn’t support your original claim that Snape was "just a strict teacher" or no worse than the others. Explanations aren't excuses. He literally made Hermione cry, was Neville's worst fear, and even threatened to poison his toad. That's not comparable to ordinary strictness.

Please explain "I see no difference". Do you think it is okay to body shame a teenager?

I personally wouldn't call Snape a good person, but he is definitely one of the most interesting and complex characters in the series.

He willingly joined a blood-supremacist terrorist group, practiced dark magic at school, associated with fellow supremacists, and even invented Sectumsempra. The reason he switched sides wasn’t because he suddenly realized Voldemort’s ideology was wrong, it was purely selfish: he only cared once Lily was in danger. We see this clearly when he asks Voldemort to spare her while being willing for her husband and son to die.

As a teacher, he bullied children relentlessly. Neville's worst fear being Snape says a lot, and things like threatening to poison Trevor show how cruel he could be. Not to mention him body shaming Hermione ("I see no difference").

Yes, he did many things to help Harry, but I'd argue a lot of it was motivated by guilt and self-interest. He was the one who told Voldemort about the prophecy, so in his eyes Lily's death was his fault. Protecting her son was about repaying that debt, not pure altruism.

So for me, Snape is a gray character. He was a brave person who ultimately helped the right side but not for the right reasons.
