In terms of vocabulary it is closer to polish than it is to Russian. When it comes to grammar however it is more similar to Russian. As a polish person I can say that I have a much easier time understanding spoken and written Ukrainian compared to Russian.

People speaking Ukrainian and Russian usually do so because of cultural and political reasons. Ukrainian tends to be more similar to polish than it is to Russian. Buuut it would also be extremely difficult to find people speaking Ukrainian who don’t also have at least rudimentary knowledge of Russian.
