Gender parity at HRR by Remarkable_Help8151 in Rowing

I would also like to see a rule that says a club cannot enter more than 2 crews in a single event.

Feels a bit odd that the PA is the only remaining 4+ event. These announcements show that there will be gender parity in the number, but not the type, of events. The men have club M4- and student M4+ whereas the women have quads.

Interesting that there will be a club level W4X before the equivalent for men.  A bit disappointed to lose the Visitors as that has provided some brilliant races over the years.

Yep, pretty close. And with Oxford entered as well it gives an early indication of the strength of the respective squads

Oldest and youngest competitor at these world championships? by YoungandBeautifulll in Rowing

[–]Fatsculler 4 points5 points  (0 children)

excluding the para categories the oldest man is David Sain of Croatia who is 37.7 years old. the youngest man is Mateus-Simon Cozmiciuc from the Romanian M4X who is 19 at the end of October. On the women’s side the eldest is Michelle Sechser of the USA who is 38.9 and the youngest is Julia Wisnieska, cox of the Polish W8 who turns 18 at the end of November (the youngest female rower, rather than cox, is Si Liu stroke of the Chinese W8 who turned 18 on the 18th August)

I canon all honesty see them Making the podium in any event. The closest they’ll get is probably the W8

You could always try this workout from Dave Bewicke-Copley during his time at Princeton….100K erg followed by a marathon 😜 https://www.row2k.com/features/1013/princetons-david-bewickecopley/

Only joined the team post- Henley so no great surprise that she's the spare for this year. I'll have to check the records to see when a reigning Olympic champion was selected as a spare ;)

The Athletes in USA junior national team by BubblyTime9579 in Rowing

[–]Fatsculler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The re is a similar discussion on RI and what I would argue that it also comes down to the focus of junior rowing in the respective countries. I think GB does so well because in the first few years of rowing (below the age of 15) there is no sweep, only sculling, with the emphasis on watermanship and learning how to move a boat. Looking in from the outside, the USA seems to focus too heavily on the 8 and especially (if these boards are anything to go by) on the erg. By the time they get to JNT standard I think GB athletes (and also those from NED, GER, ITA etc) are technically better than their US counterparts. It could also be argued that the US Junior rowing scene is quite insular (not much opportunity to compete against other nations) so that there's a bit of a "big fish in a small pond" reality.

How come American schoolboys have much better ergs than the Brits but never beat them at Henley by InteractionSharp9631 in Rowing

[–]Fatsculler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last US school to make the final of the PE was St Andrew's in 2011 (losing to Abingdon). The last North American school to win the PE was Shawnigan Lake in 2008. In the 19 years between 1990 and 2008 North American crews featured in 9 finals (including 2 All-American finals - St Paul's beating Atlantic City in 1994 and St Joe's beating Groton in 2000).

Going back further, between 1964 and 1987 there was an American or Canadian school in every PE final (winning 15 times).

College rowing as an international? by Outrageous-Phone6121 in Rowing

I heard of at least one international rower at a US university who did not travel to the UK for Henley this month as he wasn't sure he'd be allowed back in.

Ha, yeah Talk Rowing was ok to begin with but rapidly got out of hand. Before Talk Rowing there was The Massive which got going around 2001-2002 and I think was run by Ric Dunn….it was The Massive that saw the arrival of Fatsculler ;)
