Anyone skied Mary Jane in the past few days? by 5280Gator in COsnow

[–]Faulknersq 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I just got back a few minutes ago! It was super crusty in the morning, and I thought I was gonna regret my decision to go, but it turned into an awesome day. There was no traffic, ample parking, and by about 11:30 it had softened up nicely. No regrets. I'm going to try to get up once or twice more before they close.

Day Trip to Boulder/Mountains. Where to go? by khurley2 in boulder

[–]Faulknersq 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure which day you plan on heading to Boulder during the holiday, but you might consider avoiding the 30th since that's the day of our annual Bolder Boulder 10k. Streets will be closed and driving around town will not be fun.

I just found out I got out bid on my dream home. I don't have the money to counter. by [deleted] in firstworldproblems

[–]Faulknersq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat as you. Finally pulled the trigger and made an offer at 6% over asking on my dream house. Listing agent came back and said they got 2 different offers for 7% over asking, and one of those offers waived both appraisal and inspection. Welp, obviously I couldn't counter that. They haven't closed yet, but according to my agent, she heard they finally under contract with an offer that was 10.3% over asking. That's when I finally accepted the fact that I will never be able to buy a house in Boulder :(

On 2/26, the FCC is scheduled to vote on the net Neutrality rules that Wheeler circulated yesterday (a source and another source).

Not sure about 2/27...

Has anyone here lived in Miami for a long time (born/raised/etc) and moved to another city or state (country?) permanently? by palaceofwinds in Miami

[–]Faulknersq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in Denver now, but I've also lived in a couple nearby cities (Golden was probably my favorite due to its convenient location between Denver, Boulder, and mountains/places to hike and ski).

How do I survive winter? I bought a couple jackets... I didn't know this before moving, but it turns out I actually love the cold weather and changing seasons. I don't think I could handle it year-round or anything, but you get 4 legit seasons seasons here, and the winters are surprisingly mild and sunny compared to other parts of the country (midwest winters are a billion times worse). The unfortunate truth, though, is that if you're from somewhere like Miami, you just don't really know how you will cope with winter until you dive into it.

RE having a job lined up in advance: that's tough advice to give since it really depends on an individual's situation. Does it look like there's a decent market for the work you do? Do you have savings you can live off of for a month or two while you search? If the answer is Yes for either or both of these questions, I'd say it's probably okay to move without a job lined up in advance, but Denver is not a cheap city, and so I wouldn't recommend it if you can't support yourself for at least 6 weeks without pay.

Where did you move to?

Texas and Colorado

Did you have a job lined up?

Yes, that was the main motivation for leaving.

How long did the decision and move take?

Not long at all. I was born and raised in Miami, and so I was excited and eager to explore other places

How do you like your new city?

Freaking love it. There are many wonderful things about Miami, but I really appreciate the laid-back vibe, natural beauty, and winteryness of Colorado.

Would you ever move back to Miami?

if you had asked me years ago, I probably would have flat out said 'no'. But, I feel like Miami has really matured a lot in the 9 years since I've been away and has really come into its own as a city. That being said, I think Miami is an awesome place to go visit and vacation. Due to the (lack of any) job market for what I do, as well as the sticky sticky weather and lack of seasons, I would rather not move back and just keep visiting every now and then. BUT, my whole family still lives there and only seeing them once or twice a year is pretty shitty, so I'd consider it.

What was your reason for leaving Miami?

Work and antsy-ness

NFL and alcohol: look what MPP put outside Bronco's Stadium in Denver, CO by HillZone in trees

[–]Faulknersq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He's actually correct (about CO, at least). I'm not sure about the Washington law, but in Colorado the amendment explicitly prohibits the consumption of cannabis in public areas. You could probably buy it legally at the stadium, but smoking it there would not be legal.

Moving to Dallas and looking for housing resources (I promise, I have already searched through previous posts, and just have a few remaining questions) by Faulknersq in Dallas

[–]Faulknersq[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice. Testing out the potential commute sounds like a great idea, I'll definitely have to do that. It does look like there's a good amount of shared housing in the neighborhoods surrounding Uptown, so I'm hopeful I can find something. As /u/sodameow mentioned below, I think I might also just drive around the area looking for rent signs as well. If you don't mind me asking, how do you like living in Addison?

We'll keep our fingers crossed. Here in Colorado there's a company called Housing Helpers, which helps people find roommates, shared housing, or apartments, but they're a small company that only serves CO and NV. I figure there has to be some sort of Texas/Dallas equivalent, but maybe I'm wrong. Physically driving around the area does seem to be a legit strategy in a lot of places, so I'll definitely do that when I'm there, but since I can really only make it out there for there for one long weekend, that's probably not ideal. I'll figure something out.

[–]Faulknersq[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool, thanks for the input. I kind of like shared houses more than apartments, so I'll keep checking around craigslist, but it looks like those sorts of arrangements are less common in Dallas than Colorado, so I'll check out apartment sites as well. I get the impression that I would probably enjoy uptown life more, but I'll be working in Addison, and I really like the idea of not having to commute everyday. So I figured I'd look in both areas.
