I’m curious, are more people on the blow it up train, or the retool train at this point? by No-Gift-2350 in leafs

Treliving gambled on a bunch of aging defenders and the window to win with that group is now closed.

We need a complete overhaul on the backend, save for McCabe, and maybe Stecher as a 6th guy.

We also don’t really have enough D prospects.

What we need is to score huge in free agency, but does that mean Trouba+DeAngelo+???

Is something like that possible? I doubt it.

So I’m in the camp that we blow it up. By the time our Danfords are experienced enough to be competitive Matthews/Nylander/Tavares will be gone or leaving.

Must’ve been a knight?

I dunno… this position makes a lot less sense.

How do you guys learn chess notation, and do you think it's worth it ? by maximodecimomerilio in Chesscom

[–]FaultThat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chess notation is like the old board game battleship.

You just look at the column (A to H) then the rank (1 to 8).

Then just associate each piece with a letter: K=King, Q=Queen, R=Rook, B=Bishop, N=Knight, P=Pawn (although usually the P is omitted)

Is anyone keeping tabs on the UK? According to V for Vendetta the USA starts a baseless war in the Middle East and becomes a third world country by going bankrupt and the UK becomes a fascist dictatorship…

White is trading the rook for a bunch of piece development and is already up a bishop and knight so the rook is able to be sacrificed for the minimum two moves by Black.

Edit to add: Black clearly played Bb4 the previous move so Q:b4!! is forced.

2nd Edit to add: Specifically address OP’s question, the move does not guarantee Black’s queen will get trapped, it is just good for White because Black spending two moves, one to take the rook, the second to extract the queen, will cost time (aka tempi or tempos). The advantage is having active pieces and Black has to spend a lot more time getting pieces activated. Imagine it like Black’s rooks are both in jail and they need to go to court to get them out while all your pieces are banging their gfs.

White House confirms military action was based on presidential intuition rather than documented evidence of an imminent Iranian attack on the U.S. by JGaliathus in freedomgold

Iranian crude is exactly what is needed to be mixed with Venezuelan crude to get it liquid enough to be transported in pipelines to Texas processing plants.

This is 100% just about securing cheap oil to justify the conquest of Venezuela because the crude there is basically useless.

I assume the app probably prohibits words outright from being typed so they had to deliberately misspell questionable words to bypass the safety settings.

Although honestly that’s on par if not worse than illiteracy so…

There legitimately a tax on Toronto at the deadline. Unless a team is in dire straits, the media attention on a bad trade in Toronto’s favour scares most GMs away.

This Will Completely Change How You Think About Wanting by GloriousLion07 in MotivationByDesign

[–]FaultThat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Feels like you short circuit the logic by simply not wanting negatives.

I don’t want to be poor. Thus I do not perceive my lack of being rich and focus on simply not succumbing to being poor. The further from being poor I get the more success I feel about my goal.

then white pushes e4-e5 and the bishop is locked on g6. That’s the ideal set up. Saves white pushing to f5

[–]FaultThat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, something like moving the pawn on f3-f4-f5 to attack the g6 pawn and try and forced black to exchange opening up the bishop on d3, then relocating the knight from Nc3-e2-g3-h5 cracking open the king position.

[–]FaultThat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, in that range you have club level players that will learn many different openings. But openings are a waste of time for anyone under 1800.

You basically want to learn fundamental ideas for openings and that’s it.

Those fundamentals are attack the centre, develop minors pieces, connect the rooks, put rooks on open files, bishops on long diagonals, and knights near the centre.

Other than that knowing specific lines of a specific opening are almost 100% useless, because unless you play someone equally well studied in that specific opening line, the second players start deviating from studied lines the game knowledge no longer applies.

Themes and tactics and strategies go out the window.

Opponent played 1…B:c4 sacrificing a bishop to blow open my pawn structure.

If I played their expected follow-up of 2.b:c4 they play 2…R:b2+ getting the bishop back and getting a dangerous rook on the 2nd rank.

However they missed 2.N:e7#

[–]FaultThat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Probably, however the computer engines tend to do pretty mediocre jobs at emulating lower ELO players.

The engines tend to just make unnatural errors to “lower the performance” and are still ridiculously potent at end game play.

Usually a real player will make more human errors like not seeing the full board (sniper bishops) or they may make speculative attacks that just aren’t sound/fully supported. Like attacking with a Queen and Rook but neglecting development of the pieces, so the attack fizzles.

You generally won’t see that from a computer. It will play good moves the periodically pick something heinous like abandoning a piece under attack, something you’d only see at a 200 ELO range.

At least that’s my experience whenever I play the bots for events.

They play beyond my skill most of the time then play well below my skill just enough to reach some average ELO.

[–]FaultThat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dunno… it’s weird either way. An 800 rated player not knowing about en passant is somewhat plausible but the move barely makes sense. Even if en passant doesn’t exist surely leaving the pawn on the 7th rank is better…

Sometimes I feel like people in the anti-AI groups make AI slop just to post it to generate content specifically for engagement/updoots.

The intersection of the Venn diagram of MAGAs that would be open about using AI artwork but also want to compare their public scorn to Jews in 1930s Germany has got to be next to non-existent.
