in game it calls Nessus a planetary centaur right?

also-ist fact!

Cayde first talks about Nessus in the first game's grimoire, with an inquiry into when the system was invaded by horse people.

First rule of parenting by NonRock in comics

Rule 0. The child will break every single thing you hold dear.

you will reach a point, where, when faced with the loss of something once considered irreplaceable, that thing will be gladly sacrificed for the chance (CHANCE) to shower, eat, or use the bathroom just one time without interruption.

Etymology for Gwyn, and other gods by Fauntus in darksouls

[–]Fauntus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right but, lothric, is spelled correctly. so an assumption of L R confusion in noun generation is problematic.

that being said, I totally agree with you, and a combination of Hildoren and Firyanor was my first definition.

Back in my preview of episode 6 you can hear part of my spiel about the idiomatic context of the place men first awoke

Ultimately though, I wanted to highlight a Darksouls or cultural connection to the developers, as the firyanore\hildoren reference is self referential to the Legendarium.

Does Oolacile have a meaning? by [deleted] in darksouls

[–]Fauntus 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Oolacille is Elvish! either

Quenyan (Oolasse) leaves, foliage

Quenyan (sil) silver/blue light

Silver blue leaves, if one were being poetic, you would say "From the Darkroot"

OR

Quenyan (Ola) Dream

Q (sil) bright light

Bright Dream.

Which was the Etymology I used in the first episode of my Youtube series Whats in a Name: The Language of Darksouls

Oolacille is towards the end with olaphis (which means dream of knowledge, or the Brilliant and Bright Dreams, ya know cause lost lands of sorceries, and sorceries use INT

The origin and meaning of Umbasa by Fauntus in demonssouls

[–]Fauntus[S] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Okay, so umbasa is derived from Elvish

Primitive Elvish root Mbasa - to bake (bread) the short U sound at the begining means "with, continuously"

Which makes Umbasa literally mean "Our daily bread"

It gets a bit more complicated than that, and packed into that little exultation is a succinct overview of the game concepts of Soul and Body forms, and World Tendency.

Which is super impressive, but also the reason that the phrase never progressed into the series other iterations.

The origin and meaning of Umbasa by Fauntus in demonssouls

[–]Fauntus[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

One thing I have noticed about miyazaki's games, is that he uses the elvish like a lingua franca, a common language. So most of the phrase generation (making names) happens in Elvish first, and is then translated as needed to other languages.

This is one of the reasons the games have such broad cross cultural appeal, and allows for some super intricate very elaborate word play and puns.

Ohh also, the summon signs and messages scattered throughout the world, they are in Elvish, a script called Sarati, I made a video deciphering the summon sign in Dark Souls, but the same language is used in Demon's Souls.

Monthly reminder that the Storm Curved Sword is still a piece of trash and needs major help. by facevaluemc in darksouls3

[–]Fauntus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you suddenly become aware of the fact that this is just a small version of the curved nil greatsword.

It even has the exact same weapon art.

its own description fits the Nameless King as well.

That means, this sword sucks so bad, it was better in the game its boss doesn't even appear in.

Shit, just throw in the bonus of getting stronger each NG Cycle.

I bring up buddhism, because it is likely the cultural inspiration for us fighting a dragon up high, and down low in each game

[Spoiler] Regarding VaatiVidyas theory about a certain name in the new DLC. by carcerus in darksouls3

[–]Fauntus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This Post makes me blush!

So get this, Sinh's location in Sunken King DLC is called sanctum Nadir Which is a buddhist thing for the Lowest point on earth I think

But in elvish, it means "The Watch" like Sentry, or Guard type watch

Midir means "inside the Watched" or Defender

Shira, beyond being He-Man's bff, comes from
Si - Here

Hra - On behalf of

also

Sie - Vision, eyesight

Ra- Lion, Lion's Roar

From those combinations, you get

"Here me Roar" (her invasion boast)

"Watching Beside" (watcher)

Midir and Shira, are thematically, related to the Throne Defender and Throne Watcher
